Abstract

Women’s reproductive circumstances and choices have consequences for their experiences of social connectedness, inclusion and support across the life-course. Australia is a pronatalist country and women’s social identity remains strongly linked to motherhood. Yet the number of women foregoing motherhood is increasing. Despite this, women without children are perceived as failing to achieve womanhood as expected by pronatalist ideologies that assume all women are or will be mothers. Defying socially determined norms of motherhood exposes women without children to negative stereotyping and stigma, which has consequences for their social connectedness, inclusion and support. This chapter examines theories of social connectedness, inclusion and support, drawing on Australian empirical data to explore how women without children experience social connectedness, inclusion and support in a pronatalist society within their daily lives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the penalty concept to treat partial slip, free surface, contact and related boundary conditions in viscous flow simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

The penalty partial‐slip formulation is analysed and related to the classical Navier slip condition. The same penalty scheme also allows partial penetration through a boundary, hence the implementation of porous wall boundaries. The finite element method is used for investigating and interpreting penalty approaches to boundary conditions.

Findings

The generalised penalty approach is verified by means of a novel variant of the circular‐Couette flow problem, having partial slip on one of the cylindrical boundaries, for which an analytic solution is derived. Further verificationis provided by consideration of viscous flow over a sphere with partial slip on the surface, and comparison of numerical and classical solutions. Numerical studies illustrate the versatility of the approach.

Research limitations/implications

The penalty approach is applied to some different boundaries: partial slip and partial penetration with no/full slip/penetration as limiting cases; free surface; space‐ and time‐varying boundary conditions which allow progressive contact over time. Application is made to curved and inclined boundaries. Sensitivity of flow to penalty parameters is an avenue for continued research, as is application of the penalty approach for non‐Newtonian flows.

Originality/value

This is the first work to show the relation between penalty formulation of boundary conditions and physical boundary conditions. It provides a method that overcomes past difficulties in implementing partial slip on boundaries of general shape, and which handles progressive contact. It also provides useful benchmark problems for future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

To generalize the traditional 2nd order stochastic perturbation technique for input random variables and fields and to demonstrate for flow problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is based on an n‐th order expansion (perturbation) for input random parameters and state functions around their expected value to recover probabilistic moments of the response. A finite element formulation permits stochastic simulations on irregular meshes for practical applications.

Findings

The methodology permits approximation of expected values and covariances of quantities such as the fluid pressure and flow velocity using both symbolic and discrete FEM computations. It is applied to inviscid irrotational flow, Poiseulle flow and viscous Couette flow with randomly perturbed boundary conditions, channel height and fluid viscosity to illustrate the scheme.

Research limitations/implications

The focus of the present work is on the basic concepts as a foundation for extension to engineering applications. The formulation for the viscous incompressible problem can be implemented by extending a 3D viscous primitive variable finite element code as outlined in the paper. For the case where the physical parameters are temperature dependent this will necessitate solution of highly non‐linear stochastic differential equations.

Practical implications

Techniques presented here provide an efficient approach for numerical analyses of heat transfer and fluid flow problems, where input design parameters and/or physical quantities may have small random fluctuations. Such an analysis provides a basis for stochastic computational reliability analysis.

Originality/value

The mathematical formulation and computational implementation of the generalized perturbation‐based stochastic finite element method (SFEM) is the main contribution of the paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a novel unstructured simulation approach for injection molding processes described by the Hele‐Shaw model.

Design/methodology/approach

The scheme involves dual dynamic meshes with active and inactive cells determined from an initial background pointset. The quasi‐static pressure solution in each timestep for this evolving unstructured mesh system is approximated using a control volume finite element method formulation coupled to a corresponding modified volume of fluid method. The flow is considered to be isothermal and non‐Newtonian.

Findings

Supporting numerical tests and performance studies for polystyrene described by Carreau, Cross, Ellis and Power‐law fluid models are conducted. Results for the present method are shown to be comparable to those from other methods for both Newtonian fluid and polystyrene fluid injected in different mold geometries.

Research limitations/implications

With respect to the methodology, the background pointset infers a mesh that is dynamically reconstructed here, and there are a number of efficiency issues and improvements that would be relevant to industrial applications. For instance, one can use the pointset to construct special bases and invoke a so‐called “meshless” scheme using the basis. This would require some interesting strategies to deal with the dynamic point enrichment of the moving front that could benefit from the present front treatment strategy. There are also issues related to mass conservation and fill‐time errors that might be addressed by introducing suitable projections. The general question of “rate of convergence” of these schemes requires analysis. Numerical results here suggest first‐order accuracy and are consistent with the approximations made, but theoretical results are not available yet for these methods.

Originality/value

This novel unstructured simulation approach involves dual meshes with active and inactive cells determined from an initial background pointset: local active dual patches are constructed “on‐the‐fly” for each “active point” to form a dynamic virtual mesh of active elements that evolves with the moving interface.

Abstract

This study is concerned with linear feedback control in finite element modeling of transient convection‐diffusion in an incompressible fluid. Our aim is to introduce a linear feedback that solves the corresponding tracking problem for any sufficiently smooth target temperature field. The control aspects are discussed and we summarize convergence results. Numerical results for a test problem are included to illustrate the approach.

Abstract

Purpose – In this chapter, we introduce the Internet-based field experiment (IBFE) that offers numerous advantages for bringing stratification processes “back into” the study of religion. We present preliminary results from a study of class and race discrimination using this approach.

Design/Methodology/Approach – Using names of fictitious characters, we sent e-mails to a nationally representative sample of 4,680 U.S. Christian churches asking about possible membership. The e-mails varied only in the perceived race and class of the senders. We utilize a mixed methods approach to analyze variation in the content of the church responses.

Findings – Our early findings suggest significant variation by race/class manipulation, religious denomination, and region of the country in churches’ responses as well as the length of time they took to reply, the length of the response, the warmth, religious tone, and several other dimensions.

Research limitations/Implications – This study raises new opportunities for Internet-based research on religion in a variety of social settings, but there is not yet a well-established set of “do's” and “don’ts” for how to proceed. We advocate the development of a protocol of best practices as this research method develops.

Originality/Value – This study demonstrates the opportunities and pitfalls of the IBFE and the advantages it provides for studies of stratification and religion. Ours is the first study to apply this emerging method to the study of religion and stratification.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a summary of the principles, theories and basic components of a recently developed brief integrated motivational intervention (BIMI) for working with individuals experience co-ccurring severe mental health and substance use problems in inpatient settings, including the outcomes of a feasiblity randomised controlled trial (RCT). There are greater financial costs and a negative impact on functioning associated with psychiatric admissions for people who experience co-occurring severe mental heath and substance misuse problems. In addition, their engagement in treatment is often problematic.

Design/methodology/approach

The BIMI described was evaluated via a feasibility RCT that assessed whether the opportunity to discuss use of substances whilst on an inpatient ward represented an opportunity to engage inpatients in thinking about their use and the impact it has on their mental health.

Findings

The BIMI is delivered in short burst sessions of 15-30 minutes over a two-week period adopting a simple 3-step approach that can be delivered by routine ward staff. It incorporates an assessment of substance use, mental health and motivation followed by personalised feedback, a focus on increasing awareness of the impact on mental health and development of goals and a change plan. The intervention has been shown to lead to higher levels of engagement in clients exploration of substance use and the impact on mental health. Findings suggest both staff and inpatients found the intervention feasible and acceptable.

Originality/value

Routine ward staff were trained to deliver a brief intervention to inpatients during an acute hospital admission.

Abstract

Purpose

The author examines the presence of foreign currency effects and the risk-mitigation channel through which a foreign-currency denomination reduces the loan spread.

Design/methodology/approach

The author runs regression analyses using loan data of firms incorporated in member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from 2000 to 2020. The author also runs several robustness tests to address forward exchange rate bias, endogeneity concern and sample-selection bias.

Findings

Consistent with the currency matching motive of foreign debt use, the results show that a foreign currency denomination is associated with a lower spread and the relationship is amplified when there is a positive correlation between the changes in the return on assets and in the exchange rate.

Research limitations/implications

This paper enriches existing studies on the use of foreign debt as an exchange rate risk management tool.

Practical implications

The results suggest that as firms utilize foreign debt and policymakers need to design banking regulations that not only oversee but also encourage the use of foreign debt as a hedging instrument to lower firms' borrowing costs.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to extant studies by examining the presence of foreign currency effects in emerging countries' loan markets and by exploiting the micro-level demand-side factors as the channel through which the currency denomination affects the loan spread.

Lillian Moller Gilbreth (1878‐1972) extended scientific management into marketing practice in the late 1920s. This paper aims to illuminate several of these practical extensions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is an historical case study.

Findings

Gilbreth brought her psychologically enlightened brand of scientific management to Macy's Department Store in New York City in the mid‐1920s; she accomplished early marketing research for Johnson & Johnson in 1926; and she designed model kitchens in the late 1920s and 1930s which showed homemakers how to minimize wasted motion and unnecessary fatigue in housework while maximizing the psychological well‐being of their families.

Practical implications

Gilbreth's accomplishments show that marketing research has a longer history than was once assumed, offering further support for the revision of Keith's 1960 periodization of this history.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to reveal how Gilbreth's unique mix of psychology and scientific management entered the field of marketing in the interwar period.

Abstract

This paper examines the nature of propaganda and its use by corporations, particularly in the USA, over a period of nearly 100 years. It emphasises the invisibility of much of this activity and propaganda’s importance for shaping acquiescence in corporate hegemony. The role played by corporate propaganda in the development of different forms of capitalism is addressed. The inculcation of accounting and finance students with values that serve corporate interests is considered: in this context propaganda is inferred in both the longstanding misrepresentation of Adam Smith, and the sustained illusion of competitive “free markets”. The role and language of the business media as a form of propaganda is considered, particularly regarding colonisation of social market economies by Anglo‐Saxon capitalism, which takes as incontestable the maximisation of shareholder value as the proper and necessary aim of corporate activity. It is argued that corporate propaganda has contributed to the accounting measure of business success being justified as an end in itself at the explicit expense of wider societal considerations.
