Abstract

South Korea has emerged as one of the most prosperous markets on the globe. Its high economic growth rate and rising household consumption indicate that many sectors of the economy are ready to absorb foreign investment. Describes some key aspects of Korean culture and how to conduct business with Koreans to help executives who are responsible for international operations, investment, joint ventures, and global marketing activities. Stresses the importance of personal relationships with Koreans, based on trust and respect; and recognition of Koreans as unique orientals.

Abstract

Investigates the impact of retail customers’ attitudes towards local retail establishments and their impact on local retail trading behaviour. Heads of 206 households were interviewed by telephone in two separate Indiana towns, each located approximately 55 miles from a major metropolitan trading area. Findings indicate there is strong positive correlation between the attitudes of consumers and local economic performances. Poor attitudes of consumers towards local business resulted in a higher percentage of income spent outside the community, which may reduce the growth of local business and employment opportunity. The unemployment rate of the community with positive attitudes was 2.2 per cent compared to 7.5 per cent of the community with negative attitudes. Suggests that small businesses and local retailers should have a concept of competition and provide service and satisfaction to the customer, instead of sitting back and being complacent.

Abstract

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) of 1977 and its amendment – the Trade and Competitive Act of 1988 – are unique not only in the history of the accounting and auditing profession, but also in international law. The Acts raised awareness of the need for efficient and adequate internal control systems to prevent illegal acts such as the bribery of foreign officials, political parties and governments to secure or maintain contracts overseas. Its uniqueness is also due to the fact that the USA is the first country to pioneer such a legislation that impacted foreign trade, international law and codes of ethics. The research traces the history of the FCPA before and after its enactment, the role played by the various branches of the United States Government – Congress, Department of Justice, Securities Exchange commission (SEC), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); the contributions made by professional associations such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICFA), the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the American Bar Association (ABA); and, finally, the role played by various international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). A cultural, ethical and legalistic background will give a better understanding of the FCPA as wll as the rationale for its controversy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine if consumers, after missing a price discount on a desired product, prefer to buy the latter at a smaller discount or prefer to pay full price but offset some of it with windfall money.

Design/methodology/approach

In four experiments, participants imagine that they have missed an opportunity to buy a box of chocolates at $50 off and are offered a second chance to buy them at a less attractive discount ($25) or pay full price, but partially offset the full price with various windfall lotteries ($25, $50, $75) and gift cards ($50).

Findings

Participants are more likely to buy the chocolates at the less attractive (second) discount rather than pay full price using windfall money. In doing so, they show that they are willing to be more, rather than less, poor from an overall wealth perspective to acquire the chocolates. This anomaly surfaces irrespective of the windfall amounts or preference elicitation methods (joint versus separate evaluation). The negative transaction utility of paying full price mediates the purchase method effect (discount versus windfall) on purchase likelihood, but gift cards are able to reduce the negative transaction utility of paying full price.

Originality/value

The research reveals a judgmental anomaly in how consumers assess product acquisition value following a lost opportunity and suggests that marketing managers may be able to reduce consumer inertia by strategically matching rewards with the source of the lost chance.

Abstract

Using indices of bribe for 19 countries, this study examines the determinants of bribe paying in international business. There is a strong positive correlation between countries where bribe taking is highly prevalent and those countries that are most likely to offer bribes. The propensity to give bribes is determined by economic factors such as per capita income and degree of economic freedom in the country, cultural factors such as power distance and masculinity; and legal regulatory factors such as accounting and tax treatment of bribes. It appears that, to eliminate international bribery, the supply side needs to be addressed in addition to the demand for bribes.

Abstract

A rationale for including operational auditing as a major component in the primary auditing course, as well as in subsequent courses, in the auditing curriculum is developed. Reports and statements from professional groups and commissions, together with accounting education literature, provide a primary resource. Problems in the auditing curriculum are identified, learning style theory and the education of accountants is explored and the objectives to provide support to achieve the educational goals identified by the various constituencies are presented.

Abstract

Illustrates how quality function deployment (QFD) can be used to measure customer satisfaction in educational institutions. Specifically, utilizes QFD in evaluating the MBA programme at Grand Valley State University. The inputs for the QFDs were obtained through several brainstorming sessions of MBA students, faculty members, administrators, and business people. The preliminary results of the pilot field test show that QFD is a very useful tool in ascertaining customer desires, prioritizing them, and directing organizational resources towards customer satisfaction.
