Abstract

The objectives of this study are to examine the conditions of finishing on the cotton fabrics after synthesizing melamine formaldehyde (M/F) microcapsules containing octadecane by the interfacial polymerization method for commercial use as active sportswear. For this, a cotton fabric was coated with the mixture of microcapsules and polyurethane binder under the various conditions such as curing temperature/time and concentration by Screen Printing Method (SPM). The thermal storage/release properties, launderability, mechanical properties, and physical properties of the fabrics were evaluated. And for examining the prior adhesive method, the cotton fabric was also coated by Knife-Over-Roll (KOR). The mean diameter of synthesized microcapsules ranged 1 to 1.5 μm; the shape was spherical, and their heat of fusion/crystallization were 140.55J/g and 133.16J/g respectively. The optimum treatment temperature/time combination to obtain the best thermal storage/release properties from microcapsules treated fabrics was 110°C/1 min. The thermal storage/release properties of treated fabrics increased as microcapsules concentration increased. The thermal properties decreased after 5 times of laundering. Bending, shear rigidities, and mean deviation of surface roughness of treated fabric increased, and the coated fabrics by KOR were stiffer and harder to bend and shear than by SPM. And the treated fabrics by KOR exhibited lower air resistance and higher moisture absorption than by SPM.

Abstract

This study was performed to measure fabric sound objectively and to relate the sound with human subjective sensation. Rubbing sound of each fabric was generated by an apparatus devised for this study and transformed into sound spectrum by fast fourier transform (FFT) analysis. As sound characteristics, level pressure of total sound (LPT), amplitude difference (ΔL), and frequency difference (Δf) were obtained. Seven sensation (softness, loudness, pleasantness, sharpness, clearness, roughness, and highness) and satisfaction for sound of each fabric were rated by free modulus magnitude estimation (FMME). The LPT of polyester taffeta was the highest (62.1dB) while the value of polyester ultrasuede was the lowest (37.4dB) among the fabrics. Values for level range (ΔL) of eight fabrics were ranged from 18.6dB to 52.4dB. Frequency difference (Δf) of all fabrics had negative values. Eight fabrics showed significant differences one another in each of sound sensation. Among the sensation, loudness, sharpness, roughness and highness were negatively correlated with sensation of softness and pleasantness. A regression model of each sensation was fitted as a function of sound parameters. Loudness, roughness, and highness were well predicted by sound parameters showing R2 higher than 0.7.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to bridge the gap between human emotions and wearable technologies for interactive fashion innovation. To consider the reasons why smart clothing should satisfy the internet of things (IoT) technical functions and human emotional expression simultaneously, to investigate the manner in which artistic design perspectives and engineering methods combined effectively, to explore the R&D elements of future smart clothing based on the IoT technology.

Design/methodology/approach

This study combines artistic design perspectives with information-sensing engineering methods as well as kansei evaluation method. Micro-sensors and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) embedded in couples clothing prototype. The first experiment step in the design and production of prototype clothing, and do the initial emotional evaluation. The second experiment is the comparative evaluation of the prototype and other typical smart clothing.

Findings

The interactive clothing prototype was proven to correlate well with human emotional expressive patterns. The evaluation I indicated the prototype can stimulate the emotional response of the participants to achieve a higher score in the activate sensor state. Evaluation II revealed that in the process of interactive clothing design, the technical functionality should synchronize with the requirements of human emotional expression.

Originality/value

This study builds the research and development theoretical model of interactive clothing that can be integrated into daily smart clothing life design, and analyze the methods and means of blending IoT smart information-sensing technology with emotional design. By means of this experimental demonstration of human-centered interactive clothing design, the authors provide smart clothing 3.0 evolutionary roadmap and propose a new concept of internet of clothes (IoC) for further research reference.

Abstract

Purpose

Face is the most intuitive and representative feature at the individual level. Many studies show that beautiful faces help individuals and enterprises obtain economic benefits and form a high economic premium, but the discussion of their potential social value is insufficient. This study aims to focus on the impact of the personal characteristics of executives. It mainly analyzes the impact mechanism of CEO facial attractiveness on corporate social responsibility (CSR) decision-making, clarifying the social value of beauty from the perspective of CSR.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the regression model to analyze the panel data set, which was conducted by a sample of Chinese publicly listed firms from 2016 to 2018.

Findings

The study found that CEOs with high facial attractiveness are more active in fulfilling CSR, which can usually bring higher social benefits. CEOs with beautiful faces are prone to overconfidence, are optimistic about their ability and the future development of the enterprise and are more willing to increase their investment in CSR. CEO duality can positively regulate the positive correlation between a CEO’s facial attractiveness and CSR.

Originality/value

Based on the perspective of upper echelons theory, this paper explores the mechanism of CEO facial attractiveness on CSR. This study enriches the perspective of the upper echelon’s theoretical research and has essential enlightenment for CEO selection and training practice.
