Abstract

This paper reviews the strategic aims and processes behind de‐centralising access as well as management of facilities management information and knowledge at the University of Sydney, in a bid to maintain the high level of facilities, improve service delivery, accountability, sustainability and ultimately, cost reduction. This was made possible by implementing an integrated facilities information management system with secure Web capabilities, interfaced with existing enterprise applications. This allowed university staff as well as external contractors for outsourced contracts, anytime anywhere, to access and manage corporate data, information, and knowledge needed to execute the organisation's overall business plan.

Abstract

With the advent of Web technology and the proliferation of Web enabled systems in the last few years, remote computer aided facilities management (CAFM) and computer integrated facilities management (CIFM) are starting to assume a more significant role. Computerised asset management (AM) has been widely discussed and various conceptual models, benchmarking and best practice principles have been proposed in the past. However, the vast majority of case studies involved private corporations as well as public sector institutions, with the majority using single‐site studies, but very little dealt with the education sector spread on multi‐sites. The effective management of assets forms an integral part of the management of the University of Sydney’s (USYD) overall resources in order to achieve its goals towards excellence in teaching and research. Reviews the current, more or less, manual centralised AM system at USYD and proposes a framework for a more decentralised, Web‐based AM system built on the existing CIFM system used by the Facilities Management Office. Further examines the strengths and weaknesses of the current and proposed systems and the possible application of the proposed system to a range of AM scenarios outside the context of the university environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to examine the concept of architectural design communication (ADC) for updating design studio dynamics in architectural education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Within this perspective, the changing and transforming contents of architectural education, the thinking, representation and production mediums are examined through the determined components of ADC. There are five components in the study, which are (1) Effective Language Use, (2) Effective use of Handcrafts, (3) Effective Technical Drawing Knowledge, (4) Effective Architectural Software Knowledge and (5) Outputs.

Design/methodology/approach

The research method is based on qualitative and quantitative methods; a survey study is applied and the comparative results are evaluated with the path analysis method. The students in the Department of Architecture of two universities have been selected as the target audience. Case study 1 survey is applied to Altinbas University (AU) and Case study 2 survey is applied to Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV) students during the COVID-19 pandemic; ‘19-‘20 spring term, online education.

Findings

As a result, two-path analysis diagrams are produced for two universities, and a comparative analysis is presented to reveal the relationships of the selected ADC components.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills an identified need to study how ADC can be developed in online education platforms.
