Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between green reporting and firm performance and how this relationship varies across various chief executive officers' (CEOs) cultural origins.

Design/methodology/approach

The period of the study spans from 2015 to 2021, and the study includes a total of 158 listed manufacturing firms, selected from 14 Anglophone countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study employs the instrumental variable-generalized method of moments (IV-GMM) technique to address potential endogeneity issues.

Findings

The results indicate that green reporting positively influences firm performance (ROA and ROE), in line with legitimacy, stakeholder and signaling theories. Nonetheless, green reporting has a more positive influence on ROA and ROE when CEOs come from cultures characterized by high power distance, high uncertainty avoidance and high masculinity. However, firms with CEOs from cultures with low individualism, low long-term orientation and low indulgence experience a more pronounced positive impact of green reporting on ROA and ROE.

Practical implications

The findings from the study suggest that governments and policymakers in Sub-Saharan Africa should promote sustainability, cultural diversity and the use of green reporting to enhance both environmental and financial performance for economic and environmental sustainability.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first studies to investigate the relationship between green reporting and firm performance and how this relationship varies across various CEOs' cultural origins.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an empirical evidence concerning the influence of Corporate governance and voluntary disclosures in annual reports: a post-International Financial Reporting Standards adoption evidence from an emerging capital market.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from the annual reports of all 22 listed non-financial firms over a five-year period. Using content analysis, the audited annual reports of the firms were scored on the extent of overall and four specific types of voluntary disclosures made. The panel data obtained were analyzed using a generalized ordinary least squares regression model.

Findings

The findings of the study show that voluntary disclosures among the firms are low even after the adoption of IFRS. Corporate governance attributes of board size and board leadership structure are significant determinants of the extent of voluntary disclosures made by the firms. However, board independence and auditor type exhibit only a significant positive effect on voluntary financial and forward-looking information disclosures.

Research limitations/implications

Firms’ voluntary information disclosure and governance variables were restricted to those in annual reports, which may partially reflect the reality of firms’ disclosure and governance practices.

Practical implications

The present study offers useful insights to regulators of the capital market to strengthen monitoring of firms to ensure strict adherence to corporate governance best practice guidelines as a means of improving information environment.

Originality/value

This study is one of the very few ones in Africa, especially in the context of Ghana Stock Exchange, to use post-IFRS data and examine a disaggregated voluntary disclosure by firms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of institutional structures on the strength of auditing and financial reporting standards.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper employs a panel data of 36 African countries over the period 2000–2018. System generalised method of moments (SGMM) was employed to estimate the relationship between institutional structures and the strength of auditing and financial reporting standards in Africa.

Findings

The findings of this paper indicate a positive and statistically significant relationship between institutional structures and the strength of auditing and financial reporting standards. As a further analysis, the study finds that the relationship between institutional structures and the strength of auditing and financial reporting standards is stronger for economies with common-law accounting traditions than those with civil-law origin.

Practical implications

The paper has important implications for countries striving to adopt and implement auditing and financial reporting standards fully. Such efforts must begin with establishing strong institutional structures in those countries.

Originality/value

This study presents the first empirical panel data evidence on the effect of institutional structures on the strength of auditing and financial reporting standards in Africa. Further, the methodology employed in this study can be regarded as effective in testing the phenomenon in other regions, or it can be employed as a guiding model for future research in the area.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to identify and review existing studies on the adoption and compliance of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Africa.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology involves a sole focus on studies conducted with an African sample, using a bibliometric method and data from the Web of Science (WoS) database. Visualizations from VOSViewer and Biblioshiny software are employed to identify the dominant authors, journals and countries contributing to research in the region.

Findings

The findings reveal existing collaborations among authors in the field. However, the study emphasizes the need for additional research to enhance the intellectual structure of the research domain, as the majority of related documents are concentrated within twenty articles with at least one citation.

Practical implications

The practical implications underscore the importance of collaboration in practice, emphasizing the need for cooperation among corporations, experts and regulatory agencies involved in IFRS adoption and compliance in Africa. By fostering collaborative efforts and knowledge-sharing among corporations, experts and regulatory agencies, practitioners can enhance their understanding, streamline implementation processes and improve compliance methods.

Originality/value

This review is one of the few to explicitly conduct a bibliometric review of IFRS adoption and compliance studies in Africa, providing a foundation for future research to determine the current direction of IFRS studies in this region.

Abstract

Purpose

This study reviews post-2009 literature on public sector internal auditing (IA) and addresses three interrelated research questions (RQ): How is research on the public sector IA being developed? What are the focus and criticisms of the literature on public sector IA? What is the future of public sector IA research?

Design/methodology/approach

We adopt a systematic literature review approach and analyze 78 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2010 and 2019. We evaluate five criteria to identify the development of public sector IA research (RQ1), namely level of government, academic discipline, number of countries, geographic areas and MSCI country classification. Similarly, we use four criteria to present the focus and criticisms of the literature (RQ2), namely, type of organizational respondent, research instrument, theories and research theme examined. Finally, we use two criteria to propose new directions for future research (RQ3), namely, the directions resulted from RQ1 and RQ2 and the directions highlighted by the 10 most cited studies in the IA literature (i.e. out of the 78 papers identified).

Findings

We find an increase of publications up to 2017, most of which are single country–focused, particularly on emerging markets. Moreover, we note that IA has been studied at all government levels, most often at the local government level. Although we identify multiple research themes examined in the literature, most studies emphasize “governance” and “operational effectiveness” using quantitative analysis, without reference to any theory. By analyzing these key features, we critically interpret the challenges as well as the skepticism that may surface by researchers. Finally, considering implications from this stream of research and analyzing the most influential studies, we recommend new avenues for investigation such as comparative studies among countries and different markets that provide further evidence on the international and regional levels and studies on the effect of cultural, institutional and demographical characteristics in IA.

Practical implications

Our results will help researchers, practitioners and consultants to identify the key issues related with IA.

Originality/value

This study is the first to provide a systematic literature review on public sector IA. Furthermore, it develops insights, critical reflections and avenues for future research in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

In light of the recent changes in the internal audit (IA) landscape, the role of auditors has undergone a significant transformation. This paper aims to investigate the effects of applying Lean Six Sigma (LSS) techniques on the effectiveness and efficiency of IA.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quantitative approach, surveying Iranian internal auditors with a sample size of 384 participants. Data analysis involved confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.

Findings

The analyses demonstrate a significant association between LSS application and IA effectiveness and efficiency. In addition, an exploratory analysis indicates that the application of LSS techniques by less experienced internal auditors had a reverse effect on IA function quality as a component of IA competency. However, IA motivation factors, including education and position, did not mediate the impact of LSS on IA effectiveness and efficiency.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted with Iranian internal auditors, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other countries. However, the primary academic implication of this research lies in its novel perspective on emphasizing the concept of continuous improvement in IA through the use of LSS techniques. By focusing on the need for internal auditors to add value to the business in new ways, this research contributes to the literature on IA quality.

Practical implications

This study has significant implications for the effective management of IA departments. By promoting the application of LSS techniques in IA, lean auditing is enhanced, and IA can create value by improving the quality of its functions. Moreover, IA regulators can benefit from this study as it emphasizes providing guidance and training on LSS techniques to enhance IA skills.

Originality/value

This research is pioneering in applying LSS methodology to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of internal auditing. It also considers the integration of lean thinking into current audit practices, making it unique and valuable in internal auditing research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the impact of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) convergence on value relevance and earnings management for Indian listed firms while also exploring whether the relationship is moderated by the firms’ corporate governance structures.

Design/methodology/approach

Corporate governance (CG) scores of 573 listed firms were calculated by using a self-constructed index for a period of 7 years (2014–2015 to 2020–2021). Static and dynamic panel models with generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators were used to test the conditional hypothesis that the impact of the Indian IFRS converged standards (Indian Accounting Standards [IndAS]) on information quality is affected by the firm’s corporate governance strength.

Findings

The estimates reveal that the positive effect of corporate governance scores on the value relevance of earnings reduces in the presence of IFRS, whereas the interaction of both the variables on book values remains insignificant. Secondly, the use of IndAS reduces discretionary accruals, but corporate governance does not have a significant moderating effect within the equation.

Practical implications

The results offer an interesting perspective into the debate on IFRS consequences and the role of internal institutional frameworks. It provides preliminary evidence suggesting that although corporate governance improves the value relevance of earnings, it may not be entirely effective in reducing the management of earnings.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first study in India to provide empirical findings on the role played by corporate governance mechanisms in explaining the relationship between IFRS convergence and accounting information quality. The analysis accounts for modelling issues such as endogeneity and autocorrelation by using dynamic panel models and instrumental variables.

Abstract

Northern Ghana still has vast supplies of undeveloped land, with enormous potential for commercial agriculture, agro‐industries, housing estates, shopping centres and hotels. Yet its regional economy remains weak. Ignoring the historical and colonial origins of the marginalization of the North generally, examines the tenurial issues and land management practices of the region and their implications for investment mobilization. The evidence suggests that the chequered history of land tenure not only resulted in social unrest and the displacement of helpless villagers, but also induced the destruction of invaluable investments, particularly in agriculture. To promote investments in the landed property sector more certain land tenure systems, secure and speedier land title documentation processes and improved management practices are required. For sustainable investments, however, tenurial security must of necessity be combined with improvements in technical and social infrastructure, financial support, widened markets and guaranteed prices, appropriate technology and environmental security. Government commitment and investment incentive packages, along with international financial and technical support should also facilitate the development process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to assess the mediating role of process innovation in the relationship between green human resource management (GHRM) and organizational efficiency among local governments. Further, the study assessed the moderating role of knowledge sharing in the relationship between process innovation and organizational efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The study focused on metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) within the Ashanti region of Ghana. The sample size was 227 employees within the selected MMDAs. Structural equation modeling in Amos (v.23) was run to test the stated hypotheses.

Findings

It was concluded that GHRM had no direct effect on organizational efficiency within the MMDAs. The relationship was rather fully mediated by process innovation. Knowledge sharing further moderated the relationship between process innovation and organizational efficiency among the MMDAs.

Practical implications

Local governments and other public institutions should adopt GHRM, as it could enhance process innovation, leading to organizational efficiency.

Social implications

This paper contributes to the understanding of GHRM in the public sector, particularly in the context of local government organizations, and provides valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners seeking to enhance their organizational performance and sustainability.

Originality/value

Although there is substantial evidence of GHRM within the private sector, less attention has been paid to the public sector, more specifically the local government. Furthermore, the interplay of process innovation and knowledge sharing adds to the knowledge of the relationship between GHRM and organizational efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates consumer perspectives on cultural appropriation in the fashion industry by analysing user-generated content on Douyin.

Design/methodology/approach

Using text-mining techniques, including topic modeling and sentiment analysis, 6,584 comments related to the Dior midi-length skirt controversy were analyzed to identify key themes and sentiments.

Findings

The study reveals that cultural appropriation elicits polarized responses. Positive themes, such as cultural appreciation, innovation and global exposure, highlight consumer approval of respectful and creative integration of cultural elements. Negative themes, including cultural theft, historical inaccuracy and commercial exploitation, underscore concerns about commodification and misuse of cultural symbols.

Practical implications

Fashion brands should prioritize cultural sensitivity by collaborating with cultural communities, ensuring historical accuracy and promoting ethical engagement with cultural symbols. Proactively addressing these issues through real-time consumer feedback can help mitigate backlash, foster trust and enhance brand equity.

Originality/value

This study advances the discourse on cultural appropriation by leveraging real-time user-generated content to provide actionable insights for ethical practices in the fashion industry.
