Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to examine the integration of instructional and transformational leadership models of leadership in sustaining quality teaching and learning in schools. The study sought to establish how principals integrate instructional and transformational leadership in enhancing learner performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed qualitative methods of collecting and analysing data. The principal sources of data were six face-to-face semi-structured interview questions with school principals from selected schools in rural South Africa. Qualitative evidence was collected from six principals selected through purposive sampling. The selection of participants was based on the criteria that there was evidence of employing instructional and transformational leadership.

Findings

Findings from the study provided evidence that instructional and transformational leadership approaches were used to change under performing schools. There was evidence of individualised consideration and principals supporting teachers through providing rewards and motivation. It was established that principals build a school culture that promotes successful academic improvement. The study showed that the integration of instructional and transformational models of leadership leads to a climate that promotes a culture of teaching and learning.

Research limitations/implications

The study covered six schools in South Africa. Findings from the study have implications that principals are cornerstones to achieving quality teaching and learning in schools.

Practical implications

The study was conducted in schools that were seen to adopt instructional and transformational leadership. This study is among the most important studies that were conducted in South Africa on the role of leadership in enhancing a culture of teaching and learning.

Social implications

The study has critical implications for policy making and influences on school leadership in general and the adoption of strategies, policies and models that can improve teaching and learning. The study highlights the importance of integrating leadership models.

Originality/value

This is an original study conducted in South Africa and data was conducted through face-to-face interviews to seek for opinions from participants in their original settings.

Abstract

Purpose

The research identifies literature on Home-Based Businesses (HBBs) from 2000 to August 2023, focuses on their economic roles, challenges for entrepreneurs and success strategies, reflecting societal and technological changes. This guides future studies and highlights knowledge gaps.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review of published, peer-reviewed research between the years 2000 and 2023 is performed to examine how research on HBBs has changed over time, areas needing more study and how research has been done.

Findings

A total of 58 articles were analyzed and categorized into five distinct themes. Key insights into the evolution, significance and multifaceted aspects of HBBs are presented, revealing the impact and role of these businesses in a modern economic context.

Originality/value

The synthesis of existing literature enhances our understanding of recent studies on HBBs, focusing on challenges, and identifies promising directions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the loyalty intent of prepaid (contract-free) customers in a market where disloyalty is prevalent and the market has low switching costs.

Design/methodology/approach

A quota, non-probability sampling technique was applied, resulting in the completion of 220 self-administered questionnaires that were used for data analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis and a structural equation model were applied to determine model fit and test the formulated hypotheses for this study.

Findings

The strength of the satisfaction–loyalty relationship is found to be influenced by three specific satisfaction antecedents, strengthened by the mediating role of customer delight and impacted by switching costs.

Practical implications

The findings of this study may guide mobile service providers in their initiatives to secure satisfaction and loyalty in a market context where switching costs are low and the market is described as disloyal.

Originality/value

This study investigates the well-researched relationship between satisfaction and loyalty and the antecedents of customer satisfaction to determine which of these variables should be the focus in a challenging market where consumers are disloyal and switching costs are low.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance records management practices at the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) in South Africa.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a convergent mixed-methods research approach, employing interviews and questionnaires for data collection. Analysis of the collected data involved both verbatim and statistical methods, and the results were presented through tables and figures.

Findings

The study revealed that AI can proficiently and effectively execute all records management practices across the entire records lifecycle.

Originality/value

Consequently, the study proposed a framework that can be used as a guiding tool for the implementation and use of AI. This framework aims to enhance records management processes, not only within the GDE but also within the broader archives and records management industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent technological developments have encouraged the United Nations to promote the adoption of digital technologies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to initiatives from businesses, an increasing number of studies indicate that public service agencies may gain benefits from adopting digital transformation. On a global scale, policymakers are examining the integration of digital technologies, specifically artificial intelligence (AI), into public service delivery (PSD), acknowledging the potential advantages and obstacles for the public sector. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the impact of AI on PSD to support the SDGs initiative.

Design/methodology/approach

The research used a qualitative approach to explore the intersection of AI, SDGs and PSD. This approach involved scrutinising relevant publications and conducting an extensive literature review. The research also used bibliographic analysis to discern patterns within the field. Findings from the literature review and bibliographic analysis contributed to identifying research trends that explore the complex relationship among AI, PSD and the SDGs. The model derived from this comprehensive review and analysis elucidates the potential of AI to enhance PSD and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.

Findings

The bibliographic study revealed significant research trends concerning AI, PSD and SDGs through an empirical investigation of an extensive array of peer-reviewed articles. This investigation focused on how the public sector can improve its delivery of services to citizens and all stakeholders to advance the SDGs. AI holds the promise of revolutionising PSD and bolstering the SDGs. By leveraging AI’s capabilities in data analysis, automation and customisation, governments can enhance the efficiency, effectiveness and accessibility of public services. This, in turn, enables public servants to tackle more complex tasks while providing citizens with personalised and relevant experiences. Additionally, the study advocates modelling the intersection of PSD and AI to achieve sustainable development.

Research limitations/implications

The employed research methodologies, such as literature reviews and bibliographic analysis, enrich the context of AI, SDGs and PSD. They offer a comprehensive perspective, identify knowledge gaps and furnish policymakers, practitioners and academics with a conceptual framework for informed decision-making and sustainable development endeavours.

Originality/value

The study provides an agenda for AI and SDGs research on application in PSD. It emphasises varied research viewpoints, methods and gaps. This study helps researchers as well as practitioners identify subtopics, intersecting themes and new research pathways.
