Abstract

THIS Indicator was invented by Mr. Alfred Cotgreave, the present Librarian of West Ham, when he was librarian of the Wednesbury Public Library, in 1877. At the time of his invention an Elliot Indicator was in use at Wednesbury, and it was owing to the misplacement of borrowers' tickets in this Indicator, that Mr. Cotgreave's attention was drawn to the question of providing some remedy. He tried various schemes to prevent such mistakes, but ultimately decided that movable numbered blocks, filling up every space in the Indicator would best meet the difficulty. An Indicator on this principle was thereon designed, and later, the numbered blocks were replaced by wooden blocks having a record book attached. The Handsworth Public Library first adopted this Indicator. Subsequently the wooden block was superseded by a metal slide in which the little book carrying the record of issues was placed. In this form the Cotgreave Indicator has existed for a number of years, and it is so well known that it is almost unnecessary to give a description of it in detail. However, I have transcribed an account of its structure and working from one of the descriptive circulars issued in connection with it, from which anyone can gather a good idea of its appearance and use :—

Abstract

The recent social and economic changes have resulted in a polarization of product standardization. While some products are constantly demanded to be of internationally recognized standards, others are increasingly required to cater for the needs of individual customers. A growing number of manufacturers serving the latter market are therefore being pushed into a Non‐standard Route Manufacturing (NSRM) situation where product volatility is the norm. Common problems facing these firms include marketing strategies, product costing, and corporate business planning. Under the circumstances product classification is identified as an effective tool to tackle these problems. Based on dissection theory, proposes a Cost Based Product Classification (CBPC) system. The establishment of a CBPC system consists of two major stages, system design and system use. Following a step‐by‐step guide, includes a practical example demonstrating how a system of this kind may be implemented.

Abstract

Explores motives for return to study amongst a sample of single and married mothers who had graduated from four Australian universities as mature students, using a modified version of Maslin′s Continuing Education Women′s Motive Questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis yielded five motive factors which were somewhat different from those found in two American samples: self‐evaluation/autonomy and vocational/family advancement were the most strongly endorsed motives. Scales derived from the factors were tested for their relationship to entry‐to‐study variables. All variables related significantly to one or more scales with previous educational experience the best predictor of motivation.

Abstract

This is a brief study of the character, and the professional career, of one of the most spectacular and prolific of all the huge medley of book‐publishers in Victorian London. George Smith is perhaps today somewhat overshadowed by other famous names. Nevertheless, in 1944, the Cambridge historian, G.M. Trevelyan, singled him from the rest: as the publisher of the monumental Dictionary of National Biography. As the nineteenth century’s cult of printed books inevitably now recedes in favour of information technology, perhaps the time is ripe for this succinct evaluation of an extraordinary publisher from Victorian times who promoted not only works by Leslie Stephen, Thackeray, and many other literary men but particularly works by women‐novelists, such as Charlotte Bronte and Elizabeth Gaskell, despite the fact that he was far from being a “feminist”, in our own contemporary sense.

Abstract

Looks at how Activity‐Based Costing (ABC) may be implemented in sectors consisting of Non‐Standard Route Manufacturers (NSRM). Following a brief summary of ABC, introduces the concept of NSRM. Within the context of a selected knitwear company, identifies a three‐stage procedure with attention focused on the first stage. product classification. A three‐division model was developed and proved more satisfactory, when tested, than a five‐division one. The finalized product classification scheme based on this model is then devised to reduce the number of product categories from 250 to nine. With the classification scheme gives an example which illustrates how ABC works compared with the previous costing approach.

Abstract

The fast‐changing manufacturing environment has been the prime cause of a company′s growing dissatisfaction with its production information system, which ultimately led to the realization of the need for an Integrated Manufacturing Information System (IMIS). A three‐stage procedure was established to assist the investment decision, which involved informal communication, project appraisal, and installation planning. While the long‐term impact of the IMIS on the company′s business operation is yet to be fully understood, its short‐term benefits are being realized. These include substantial savings on overheads, a marked increase in productive hours, and promising improvement in productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the development of forms of advertising on radio and internet when they were new media and propose a model of periodization through which the two histories can be understood and appreciated.

Design/methodology/approach

Two narrative histories were constructed based on data collected from numerous public and private, historical and contemporary and primary and secondary materials. The methodology of New Historicism informed the research.

Findings

When the two histories are viewed through the model, many similarities in terms of milestones and markers become apparent.

Research limitations/implications

Perhaps when the next new electronic mass medium is invented, a future researcher may look back on this model and consider whether it applies.

Practical implications

For practitioners who consider history a relevant source of knowledge and inspiration, this research offers a way of organizing and understanding the history of internet advertising.

Social implications

Today’s consumers, especially Millennials, continue to seek to avoid advertising on the internet. The use of ad blockers poses a significant threat to the business models of online content providers. This research demonstrates that resistance to advertising is nothing new and that it may be, in the end, futile.

Originality/value

The model is an original creation, based on an original view of history, and offered as a lens through which to understand this history.
