This paper numerically investigates the effect of cavity radiation on the thermal response of hollow aluminium tubes and facade systems subjected to fire.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper numerically investigates the effect of cavity radiation on the thermal response of hollow aluminium tubes and facade systems subjected to fire.

Design/methodology/approach

Finite element simulations were performed using ABAQUS 6.14. The accuracy of the numerical model was established through experimental and numerical results available in the literature. The proposed numerical model was utilised to study the effect of cavity radiation on the thermal response of aluminium hollow tubes and facade system. Different scenarios were considered to assess the applicability of the commonly used lumped capacitance heat transfer model.

Findings

The effects of cavity radiation were found to be significant for non-uniform fire exposure conditions. The maximum temperature of a hollow aluminium tube with 1-sided fire exposure was found to be 86% greater when cavity radiation was considered. Further, the time to attain critical temperature under non-uniform fire exposure, as calculated from the conventional lumped heat capacity heat transfer model, was non-conservative when compared to that predicted by the proposed simulation approach considering cavity radiation. A metal temperature of 550 °C was attained about 18 min earlier than what was calculated by the lumped heat capacitance model.

Research limitations/implications

The present study will serve as a basis for the study of the effects of cavity radiation on the thermo-mechanical response of aluminium hollow tubes and facade systems. Such thermo-mechanical analyses will enable the study of the effects of cavity radiation on the failure mechanisms of facade systems.

Practical implications

Cavity radiation was found to significantly affect the thermal response of hollow aluminium tubes and façade systems. In design processes, it is essential to consider the potential consequences of non-uniform heating situations, as they can have a significant impact on the temperature of structures. It was also shown that the use of lumped heat capacity heat transfer model in cases of non-uniform fire exposure is unsuitable for the thermal analysis of such systems.

Originality/value

This is the first detailed investigation of the effects of cavity radiation on the thermal response of aluminium tubes and façade systems for different fire exposure conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

Reinforced concrete structural frames with masonry infills (infill-frames) are commonly used for construction worldwide. While the behavior of such frames has been studied extensively in the context of earthquake loading, studies related to their fire performance are limited. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the behavior of infill-frames under fire exposure by presenting a state-of-the-art literature review of the same.

Design/methodology/approach

Both experimental and computational studies have been included with a special emphasis on numerical modeling (simplified as well as advanced). The cold behavior of the infill-frame and its design requirements in case of fire exposure are first reviewed to set the context. Subsequently, the applicability of numerical modeling strategies developed for modeling cold infill-frames to simulate their behavior under fire is critically examined.

Findings

The major hurdles in developing generic numerical models for analyzing thermo-mechanical behavior of infill-frames are identified as: lack of temperature-dependent material properties, scarcity of experimental studies for validation and idealizations in coupling between thermal and structural analysis.

Originality value

This study presents one of the most popular research problems connected with practical and reliable utilization of numerical models, as a good alternative to expensive traditional furnace testing, in assessing fire resistance of infill-frames. It highlights major challenges in thermo-mechanical modeling of infill-frames and critically reviews the available approaches for modeling infill-frames subjected to fire.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to analyze the intellectual structure in sustainable procurement (SP) research to identify the knowledge research clusters and provide potential avenues for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The study conducted a bibliometric analysis to analyze the intellectual structure in the area of SP. Overall, 1,294 articles were selected from the Scopus database published between 2000 and 2022. The analysis was conducted using bibliometric R package, Biblioshiny and VOSviewer software. Further, content analysis of research clusters was carried out to set the future research agenda.

Findings

The study identifies four major knowledge research clusters of SP, namely, (1) green supply chain practices, (2) socially responsible purchasing, (3) environmental purchasing and (4) public procurement and policy. The study suggests a few research directions in the SP field. Moreover, the future research directions are aligned with specific organizational theories applicable in the area of SP research.

Research limitations/implications

The study is dependent on the Scopus database for the source of research publications on SP. Future studies may consider other research database sources.

Practical implications

Identifying knowledge research clusters of SP research is of paramount importance for developing policies in the near future. These policy initiatives pave the way for the adoption of SP practices in the business. The findings indicate the issues managers encounter while implementing SP in organizations.

Originality/value

The study offers valuable insights concerning parameters such as significant publication outlets, influential countries concerning the number of publications, impactful authors, title keywords and identifying major knowledge research clusters of SP to suggest future research directions. Further, the present study highlights emerging areas that require further research, including process governance, supplier diversity, innovation, the role of emerging technologies and the application of organizational theories in SP.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the lay notions of happiness and determine the factors that influence one’s experience of happiness.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a qualitative technique to understand better how happiness is conceptualised. This study uses a purposive sample to select a diverse and representative sample (N = 357). Participants responded to an open-ended questionnaire designed to elucidate their understanding of happiness. The data is analysed using grounded theory and a bottom-up approach.

Findings

Happiness is defined as a harmonious state where the individual’s physiological and psychological needs are satisfied in the past, present and future, leading them to live a meaningful and contented life. However, several factors may affect an individual’s level of happiness. Family and friends; health and wellness; personal and professional successes; recreation and personal traits all contributed to the feeling of happiness. On the other hand, factors impeding happiness include unfavourable surroundings, work and play impediments, strained relationships and undesirable behavioural characteristics. The authors compare and contrast these findings to the current empirical literature and hypotheses.

Originality/value

Despite the substantial study, no uniform definition of happiness exists. The existing body of knowledge is dominated by western viewpoints, which are not necessarily congruent with their eastern counterparts. This study presents a thorough and culturally unique understanding of happiness. This understanding would enable academics, policymakers and educators to develop successful policies that promote happiness. Additionally, this study aid future researchers to develop new measures that enable cross-regional and cross-national comparisons of happiness dynamics

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to examine whether management education can successfully cultivate the competency of empathy that is needed in future corporate leaders to promote sustainability initiatives catering to diverse stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

The research highlights the impact of management education on cognitive and affective empathy by analysing the interpersonal reflectivity scores of entering students enrolled in a two-year, full-time MBA programme and the scores of the same students at graduation.

Findings

The findings show that management education has a positive impact on cognitive empathy, while it reduces affective empathy and general empathy. Further, findings show that the management curriculum brings cognitive and affective empathy to an equilibrium level that is needed for a competitive business environment.

Research limitations/implications

The research focussed only on the change in empathy of the participants (students) during management education and not during actual corporate work.

Practical implications

The research infers that current management education creates future executives with higher cognitive empathy. It argues that they would care more about the sustainability of the business in terms of profit or access to capital rather than care and concern for all the stakeholders, society and the environment. A new paradigm in management education also needs to be focussed around inculcating how to empathise affectively.

Originality/value

The study presents an empirical analysis suggesting that management education is opening the mind but not the heart. It raises a significant concern that higher management curriculum is not developing future executives who can lead the sustainability initiatives.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present metaGraphos, a crowdsourcing system that aids in the transcription and semantic enhancement of scanned documents by using a pool of volunteers or people willing to participate in exchange for a financial reward.

Design/methodology/approach

The metaGraphos can be used in circumstances where optical character recognition fails to produce satisfactory results, semantic tagging or assigning thematic headings to texts is considered necessary or even when ground-truth data has to be collected in raw form.

Findings

The system automatically provides a Web-based interface comprising a static HTML page and JavaScript code that displays the scanned images of the document, coupled with the corresponding incomplete texts side by side, allowing users to correct or complete the texts in parallel.

Social implications

By assisting the parallel transcription and the semantic enhancement of difficult scanned documents, the system further reveals the hidden cultural wealth and aids in knowledge dissemination, a fact that contributes significantly to the academic-scientific dialog and feedback.

Originality/value

Individual researchers, libraries and organizations in general may benefit from the system because it is cost-effective, practical and simple to set up client–server architecture that provides a reliable way to transcribe texts or revise transcriptions on a large scale.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the talent acquisition practices adopted by startups and understand how small entrepreneurs leverage social capital to address the talent acquisition challenges faced by them, and; identify some of the unique parameters adopted by startups in talent acquisition.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a multiple case study method to explore the talent acquisition practices in startups in India. The study included six case studies on startups in Hubli city of North Karnataka in India.

Findings

This paper finds that startups (especially in smaller cities) face challenges such as lower quality of talent pool, absence of a brand name, inability to provide competitive salary and other benefits as per industry standards and locational disadvantages in talent acquisition. Thus, entrepreneurs leverage their social capital for talent acquisition by handpicking talent on the basis of familiarity or credible networks and recommendations. Incubation centres provide institutionalized sources of social capital to help them attract good talent. This study finds that employee-culture fit and trust play important role in acquiring talent in startups.

Practical implications

The study has implications for startup entrepreneurs, recruitment service providers, incubation centres, trainers, policymakers, etc. The study provides useful insights to the startups with regard to their recruitment practices.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature in the domains of talent acquisition, startups and social capital by describing hiring challenges faced by startups and exploring the mechanisms used by them in overcoming such challenges.

Abstract

Purpose

To review and explore optical fiber and carbon nanotube (CNT) as prospective alternatives to copper in VLSI interconnections.

Design/methodology/approach

As the technology moves to deep submicron level, the interconnect width also scales down. Increasing resistivity of copper with scaling and rising demands on current density drives the need for identifying new wiring solutions. This paper explores various alternatives to copper. Metallic CNTs, optical interconnects are promising candidates that can potentially address the challenges faced by copper.

Findings

Although, the theoretical aspects proves CNTs and optical interconnect to be better alternative against copper on the ground of performance parameters such as power dissipation, switching delay, crosstalk. But copper would last for coming decades on integration basis.

Originality/value

This paper reviews the state‐of‐the‐art in CNT interconnect and optical interconnect research; and discusses both the advantages and challenges of these emerging technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

Principally, this study aims to test a conceptual framework of the moderating influence of fear of COVID-19 on the following hypothesized relationships (1) quality of work life and bankers' commitment, (2) the mediating spillover effect of job satisfaction in the quality of work life (QWL) and affective commitment relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative cross-sectional research design is adopted on 318 bankers chosen from four prominent Indian cities. The mediation model is tested through SPSS, PROCESS macro, and AMOS. Conditional process modeling is also administered to test the moderating effect of fear of COVID-19.

Findings

The results suggest that the positive effect of QWL on commitment is completely mediated through job satisfaction. Further, the fear induced by COVID-19 negatively moderated the positive direct relation of QWL with commitment and the positive mediating spillover effect of job satisfaction.

Originality/value

The present research is virtually the first to introduce fear of COVID-19 as a psychological construct, to test a moderated mediation model for implications to organizational behavior and human psychology theory and practice. In coalescence of the need satisfaction, spillover, and COR theories, the authors postulate that as spillover between the domains of an individual's life (work, social, financial, personal, and overall life satisfaction) occurs, such effect is calibrated (augmented or attenuated) by the degree of risk/threat/depletion of their resources in the quest for attaining higher valued resources (overall life satisfaction). The moderated mediation mechanism is suggested for replication in other avenues for greater generalizability.

Abstract

Purpose

The discussion about using Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) by teachers is making notable progress on a daily basis. This research examines the teachers' adoption intention to adopt ChatGPT by focusing on perceived trust and perceived risk. The study seeks to elucidate the impact of these two factors on teachers' adoption intentions towards ChatGPT.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was exclusively conducted at private higher educational institutions in Gujarat, India. Data collection was done through a cross-sectional survey design. The proposed conceptual model was examined with the help of structural equation modelling (SEM).

Findings

The outcome of the study confirms the significant contribution of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived trust, perceived intelligence, perceived anthropomorphism and social influence to teachers' intention to adopt ChatGPT. The findings of the study show that perceived risk exerts a negative moderating effect between perceived usefulness and adoption intention as well as between perceived trust and adoption intention.

Research limitations/implications

This study fills the knowledge gap about teachers’ adoption of ChatGPT at private higher education institutions, thus contributing to the existing literature. Specifically, the distinctive role of key variables like perceived risk and perceived trust helps increase the existing body of knowledge.

Practical implications

Several practical implications are presented on the basis of the conclusions from the outcome of the study that would help increase teachers’ adoption intention of ChatGPT in higher education institutions. These implications include recommendations to promote the integration of ChatGPT in educational set-ups to help teachers leverage its potential benefits into their teaching practices.

Originality/value

This research study goes deeper into the subject than previous research, which mainly focused on the possible advantages and downsides of ChatGPT applications in the field of education. It makes a substantial contribution to our understanding of ChatGPT adoption among teachers for educational purposes by investigating through the lens of perceived risk and perceived trust. The study offers fresh understandings that were previously ignored and brings new perspectives to the body of literature.
