Abstract
Purpose
The 2020 election season brought with it a global public health pandemic and a reenergized racial justice movement. Given the social context of the intertwined pandemics of COVID-19 and racialized violence, do the traditional predictors of voter turnout – race, poverty rates and unemployment rates – remain significant?
Design/methodology/approach
Using county-level, publicly available data from twelve Midwest states with similar demographic and cultural characteristics, voter turnout in St. Louis City and St. Louis County were predicted using race, poverty rates and unemployment rates.
Findings
Findings demonstrate that despite high concentration of poverty rates and above average percentages of Black residents, voter turnout was significantly higher than predicted. Additionally, findings contradict previous studies that found higher unemployment rates resulted in higher voter participation rates.
Originality/value
This study suggests that the threat of COVID-19 and fear of an increase in police violence may have introduced physical risk as a new theoretical component to rational choice theory for the general election in 2020.

Abstract
The production, distribution and disposal of packaging materials consumes vast amounts of energy. These costs are quantified and ways in which they can be reduced are described. Recycling of materials is seen as offering distinct environmental advantages in terms of energy saving as part of an overall strategy, together with the use of more efficient forms of transport. The development of other forms of energy to replace environmentally harmful fossil fuels is seen as necessary.

Abstract
A study carried out by the Gateway supermarket chain and Landbank Environmental Consultancy partnership into environmental damage caused by the production, distribution and disposal of packaging materials produced a report providing Gateway′s packaging strategy for the 1990s. The report is summarised, identifying those packaging materials or systems which offer the clearest environmental benefits, noting the principal environmental problems associated with particular packaging materials, and setting a target for reducing energy consumption in their production. The principles of an environmental approach to packaging materials are also defined.

Abstract
The United States government is the world's largest publisher. Its presses churn out thousands of items annually, covering every conceivable subject. Even though most of the items deal with present day concerns, the United States government is responsible for the publication of a large number of histories. Unfortunately, these works, with the possible exception of the Department of Defense's Military History Series, have received little exposure and limited use. In an effort to bring this valuable resource to light, the following bibliography presents annotated citations to nearly 150 histories published from mid‐1977 through mid‐1979.
