Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to give a critical review of the City-State Theory by Wan Chin of Hong Kong. Chin is referred to as the “Father of Hong Kong Independence,” and his two books about the City-State Theory of Hong Kong are popular among the netizens in Hong Kong as a new model of Hong Kong-China (People’s Republic of China (PRC)), in which Hong Kong is considered a city-state and should be fully segregated from the PRC other than in seeking its help in military and diplomatic functions. This paper will aim to review his works with the view of nationalism and nativism theories.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses nationalism theories with particular focus on Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities and theories on American nativism. Then an effort is made to compare these theories against Chin’s arguments on his City-State Theory. This paper also compares his theories against China’s state-nationalism raised by Professors He and Guo.
Findings
This paper concludes that Chin advocates a “Hong Kong Nationalism,” a blend of traditional Chinese culture and moral values (he used the term Huaxia), but with a Western influence, into a typical Hong Kong culture. His theory fits into Anderson’s arguments of allowing Hong Kong citizens to imagine Hong Kong as a nation, through the “ramparts” of the city-state. His nativist advocacies also have shown strong nationalistic sentiments. He argues that China should be built in the Hong Kong model before the PRC intervention.
Originality/value
Despite his fame, this paper is the first comprehensive academic paper to review Chin’s theories. This paper introduced the notion of “ramparts” and how this has become the backbone of Chin’s nationalism advocacies.

Purpose
The initial stiffness method has been extensively adopted for elasto‐plastic finite element analysis. The main problem associated with the initial stiffness method, however, is its slow convergence, even when it is used in conjunction with acceleration techniques. The Newton‐Raphson method has a rapid convergence rate, but its implementation resorts to non‐symmetric linear solvers, and hence the memory requirement may be high. The purpose of this paper is to develop more advanced solution techniques which may overcome the above problems associated with the initial stiffness method and the Newton‐Raphson method.
Design/methodology/approach
In this work, the accelerated symmetric stiffness matrix methods, which cover the accelerated initial stiffness methods as special cases, are proposed for non‐associated plasticity. Within the computational framework for the accelerated symmetric stiffness matrix techniques, some symmetric stiffness matrix candidates are investigated and evaluated.
Findings
Numerical results indicate that for the accelerated symmetric stiffness methods, the elasto‐plastic constitutive matrix, which is constructed by mapping the yield surface of the equivalent material to the plastic potential surface, appears to be appealing. Even when combined with the Krylov iterative solver using a loose convergence criterion, they may still provide good nonlinear convergence rates.
Originality/value
Compared to the work by Sloan et al., the novelty of this study is that a symmetric stiffness matrix is proposed to be used in conjunction with acceleration schemes and it is shown to be more appealing; it is assembled from the elasto‐plastic constitutive matrix by mapping the yield surface of the equivalent material to the plastic potential surface. The advantage of combining the proposed accelerated symmetric stiffness techniques with the Krylov subspace iterative methods for large‐scale applications is also emphasized.

Abstract
Purpose
The securities transaction tax (STT) has been theoretically considered as an important regulation device for decades. However, its role and effectiveness in financial markets is still not well understood both theoretically and empirically. By use of agent-based modeling method, the purpose of this paper is to present a new artificial stock market model with self-adaptive agents, which allows the assessment of the impacts from various levels of STTs in distinctive market environments and thus a comprehensive understanding of the effects of STTs is achieved.
Design/methodology/approach
In the model, agents are allowed to employ the strategies used by the following five types of investors: contrarians, random traders, momentum traders, fundamentalists and exit strategy holders. Specifically, the authors start with the investigation of the dynamics of a tax free benchmark market; then the patterns of market behaviors and the behaviors of various types of investors are discussed with different levels of STTs in markets with mild and high fluctuations.
Findings
The simulation results consistently show that a moderate transaction tax does contribute to market stabilization in terms of reducing market volatility while with a price of mild decrease of market efficiency and liquidity. The findings suggest that a balance between market stability and efficiency could be reached if regulatory authorities introduce STTs to markets discreetly.
Originality/value
This paper enriches the comprehensive understanding of the effects of STT, and gives good explanation about the controversy between Tobin’s proponents and anti-Tobin group.

Purpose
Six-axis force sensors play an important role in civilian and military fields because of their multifunctionality. In the context of sensor structure design, sensitivity and sensitivity isotropy are often considered. This paper aims to study the possible relationship between the sensitivity/sensitivity isotropy and structural parameters of an 8/4–4 parallel six-axis force sensor. A comprehensive evaluation index and structural optimization design scheme are suggested in the end.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the conditional number of the Jacobian matrix spectral norm, the sensitivity and sensitivity isotropy of the sensor are derived. Orthogonal experiments are used to determine the degree of primary and secondary factors that have a substantial effect on the sensor characteristics. The relationship between the performance indices and the structural parameters is analyzed by the performance atlas method. The comprehensive evaluation index lays the foundation for the structural optimization design of an 8/4–4 parallel six-axis force sensor.
Findings
The variation in each performance index of the sensor for each of the structural parameters is analyzed, and the structural parameters of the sensor with the desired performance indices can be easily selected from the performance atlases. A comprehensive performance evaluation index with a target value of 1 is proposed, and the overall influence of the structural parameters on the sensor performance index is investigated. A simulation example shows the feasibility of the proposed evaluation index.
Originality/value
The importance of each structural parameter of the 8/4–4 parallel six-axis force sensor is determined through orthogonal experiments in this paper. Relations among the structural parameters meeting the performance indices are derived and shown in the performance atlases. A comprehensive evaluation index is proposed to analyze the overall sensor performance.

Findings
The simulated results showed great shearing strength between the chipset and the printed circuit board. The position of chip exerts great influence on the distribution of temperature field and thermal stress field of circuit board. The reasonable distribution of chip will effectively reduce the temperature extremum and stress extremum of circuit board.
Originality/value
The paper analyzes and presents a discussion of the problems relating to the density of electronic packaging. The analysis process and the method of the paper provide essential help in resolving electronic device heat problems.

Abstract
Purpose
To provide some useful information on tribology performances of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) reinforced thermoplastic polymide under dry and water lubrication conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
The effect of MoS2 content on composites' mechanical and tribological performances was investigated and worn morphologies, elements distribution and wear mechanisms under dry and water lubricant condition were also analyzed.
Findings
As a result, the composites' main mechanical performances decreased partly compared with pure PI and it became more stable with MoS2 content unceasingly increasing (up to 20 wt%). In the dry sliding condition, the friction coefficient decreased obviously by filling MoS2. The wear of composites which filled 10‐15 wt% MoS2 was less than other composites in which MoS2 content was below to 5 wt% or high than 20 wt%. It was found that materials wear happened mainly at initial stages of tribology test which the temperature was so high and the adhesive wear had a dominant place during the test process. While in the water lubrication condition, the composites tribological performances were improved evidently and MoS2 was still an effective lubricant and the fatigue wear was the main factor during the tribology process.
Originality/value
The paper analyzed the MoS2's effect on materials mechanical and tribological performances and divided the tribology process into two parts according to materials friction and wear.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to further explore the co-citation and bibliographic-coupling relationship among the core authors in the field of Chinese information science (IS), to expose research activity and author impact, and to make induction analyses about Chinese IS research patterns and theme evolution.
Design/methodology/approach
The research data include 8,567 papers and 70,947 cited articles in the IS field indexed by Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index from 2000 to 2009. Author co-citation analysis, author bibliographic-coupling analysis, social network analysis, and factor analysis were combined to explore co-citation and bibliographic-coupling relationships and to identify research groups and subjects.
Findings
Scholars with greatest impact are different from the most active scholars of Chinese IS; there is no uniform impact pattern forming since authors’ impact subjects are scattered and not steady; while authors’ research activities present higher independence and concentration, there is still no steady research pattern due to no deep research existing. Furthermore, Chinese IS studies can be delineated by: foundation or extension. The research subjects of these two parts, as well as their corresponding/contributing authors, are different under different views. The general research status of core authors is concentrated, while their impact is broad.
Originality/value
The combined use of some related methods could enrich the development and methodology research of the discipline, and the results establish a reference point on the development of IS research.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine music teachers' perceptions of teaching cultural and national values (also defined as national cultural values) to explore the tensions facing school music education in the choice of music types to be delivered in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Design/methodology/approach
With specific regard to music teachers' perceptions of “values,” “music cultures” and “nationalism,” data were drawn from a survey questionnaire given to 343 music teachers (155 preservice and 188 in-service music teachers) and semistructured interviews with 36 of these respondents.
Findings
The findings of the study showed that though many respondents in Hong Kong and Taiwan felt comfortable teaching traditional Chinese music, they did not want to teach contemporary Mainland Chinese music and other political or patriotic forms in the school music curriculum. The data also demonstrated some shortcomings in introducing a balance of music types into the curriculum, as well as limitations in promoting national education in response to the respective sociopolitical situations in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Research limitations/implications
This study was subject to limitations regarding the potential generalizability of the findings on school music teachers' perceptions in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Practical implications
The implications for teachers and student teachers regarding the development of cultural and national values related to the political processes in Hong Kong and Taiwan are complicated, because of not only their relationship with Mainland China and its education based on nationalism but also the extent of teachers' professional training to help create an enabling environment for national and cultural development.
Originality/value
The findings of this study revealed that there are fundamental gaps in the overt and operational curricula in Hong Kong and Taiwan concerning the sociopolitical function of values in school music education in response to their respective sociopolitical situations.

Panel data provide the possibilities of estimating individual treatment effects for multiple individuals. Two issues are considered: (1) differences in the estimated individual treatment effects are due to heterogeneity or a chance mechanism? Abstract
Purpose
This article analyzes the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) stimuli on customer engagement as well as on value co-creation. The moderating role played by customer ability readiness is also examined.
Design/methodology/approach
Total 426 questioners are collected from the customers who consumed intelligent service robot.
Findings
First, the perceived interactivity (PI) of AI stimuli have a significant positive impact on value co-creation; second, customer engagement plays a mediating effect on the relationship between PI and value co-creation; finally, customer ability readiness has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between AI stimuli, customer engagement and value co-creation.
Research limitations/implications
Firstly, the method of questionnaire survey has certain limitations, In future research, more advanced survey methods (such as social perception calculations) can be used to make survey samples more comprehensive and analysis results more accurate. Secondly, the paper used a single-dimensional test for the two variables of customer engagement and value co-creation. Future research should divide the dimensions of customer engagement and value co-creation into more specific way. Finally, this study lacks research on the regulatory effect of customer ability readiness and further division of customer readiness.
Practical implications
First, this paper uses the arousal theory to participate in marketing theory and value co-creation theory, which is the cross and fusion of theory, and also the enrichment and expansion of the existing theoretical research, with a certain theoretical innovation. Second, based on previous research, this research developed and designed a measurement scale for AI stimuli. Finally, through empirical research, it is found that the perceived personalization of AI stimuli does not have a significant direct effect on value co-creation, which is a new views and insight.
Social implications
First, when using intelligent customer service robots, companies should pay attention to improving the PI and personalization of intelligent customer service robots. Second, companies should attach importance to the development environment of customer engagement, proactively and effectively identify customer needs. Finally, companies should provide customers with a good support atmosphere, publicize and explain in advance the use of intelligent customer service robots to increase their confidence.
Originality/value
The study develops a scale of AI stimuli and is among the first to integrate and examine the inter-relationships between customer engagement, customer ability, and value co-creation from the increasingly important phenomenological perspective of AI.
