Abstract

Purpose

This study examines various aspects of green energy management operations in India and reports the current state, potential avenues and barriers for green energy management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study performs an extensive literature review and covers the several aspects of green energy management operations.

Findings

The findings report the current state of various aspects of green energy management operations such as: procurement, manufacturing and distribution and provides the viable business models. It further explains the various facilitators and barriers of green energy management and reports the opportunities and challenges that exist in developing and managing green energy supply chain.

Originality/value

The study is pioneer in providing a comprehensive view of developing and managing green energy operations in India. The study is useful to various organisations on drafting strategies to effectively adopt and manage green energy. The study is also useful in policy formulation for promoting green energy use. This article also set as a base for future researchers working in the area of green energy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to formulate a user-friendly pre-design model that could be a decision support tool for green wall systems to assist designers in selecting an optimal green wall system aligned with specified performance criteria while concurrently addressing project requirements linked to social and economic parameters. This approach seeks to enhance overall project satisfaction for the designer and the owner.

Design/methodology/approach

A correlation between the green wall context and design requirements and its performance on the buildings have been defined by considering its social and economic parameters, which represented the owner preferences to ensure the most satisfaction from installation as it achieves the required performance that is defined by the designer such as maximizing thermal insulation, improving indoor air quality, reducing the needed heating and cooling loads, etc. and also to achieve the satisfaction in social and economic requirements defined by the owner such as system installation cost, system maintenance cost, adding beauty value, etc.

Findings

The research developed an easy pre-design model to be a tool for green wall system decision-making for the most suitable system, which contains three main steps: the first one is defining the required performance of the green wall (designer requirements), the second step is limiting the context of the project which is made by designer and the owner requirements and finally the third step is choosing the system components that ensures achieving the requirements of both owners and designer, related to the building and climate context.

Originality/value

The added value lies in developing a green wall decision-making tool, essentially a pre-design model. This model considers the correlation between the project’s context, encompassing climate and building conditions. It provides a structured approach for decision-making in the early stages of green wall design. It offers valuable insights into the optimal choices related to system type, installation methods and plant characteristics. This enhanced decision-making tool contributes to more informed and efficient design processes, considering each project’s specific needs and conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to evaluate construction and industrial waste materials in concrete using different additives.

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental study investigated the effect of waste foundry sand (WFS), waste glass (GW) as partial substituent to natural sand and addition of waste glass fibers (GFs) and silica fume (SF) in natural/construction waste aggregate concrete on mechanical properties, durability and microstructure using.

Findings

The results reveal significant strength enhancement on using two admixtures, the maximum increase in compressive strength was obtained on using 20% WFS and 0.75% GF for both natural (75% increment) and construction waste (72% increment) coarse aggregates. Using three admixtures simultaneously, the maximum enhancement in compressive strength was found for (WFS(20%) + GW(10%) + GF(0.75%)) for both natural aggregates (122% increment) and construction waste (114% increment) coarse aggregates as compared to control mix. The 28 days split tensile and flexural strength of natural/construction waste aggregate concrete improve with age appreciably for optimal contents of single, two or three admixtures and the maximum tensile and flexural strength increment was 135 and 97% for mix (WFS(20%) + GW(10%) + GF(0.75%)) with natural aggregates as compared to control mix. The microstructural analysis results indicate improved microstructure upon partial substitution of sand with WFS, GW and SF along with addition of waste GFs.

Originality/value

The use of construction and industrial waste as a substituent to natural aggregate/sand will provide far reaching benefits for the green construction and the environment at large.

Abstract

Purpose

To come up with a prudent decision on the installation of an appropriate green wall (GW) on buildings, this study presents a novel decision-making algorithm. The proposed algorithm considers the importance of barriers hampering GW adoption, as well as their relationships with regard to different types of GWs existing in a contextual setting.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed methodological approach is based on the integration of qualitative and quantitative techniques by employing focus group discussion, fuzzy-based best-worst method and fuzzy TOPSIS.

Findings

Based on the experiences of qualified experts involved in related projects in Hong Kong, the following conclusions are drawn: (1) cost, installation and maintenance-related barriers are perceived to have the highest importance, (2) modular living wall system is the most suitable GW system for the context of Hong Kong and (3) existing barriers are found to have a pivotal role in the ranking of the most suitable GW systems.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable insight not only for policymakers and stakeholders, but also for establishing a methodological approach that can assist decision-makers in identifying the most beneficial GW system rather than the most applicable one. This could have significant implications and introduce potential changes to the common way of practice within the industry and lay the foundation for wider adoption of GW.

Originality/value

While previous studies have investigated the sustainability-related issues of GW façade applications, the current body of knowledge is deprived of a comprehensive methodological approach for the selection of the most suitable GW systems.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on psychological contract (PC) theory and platform labor research, the purpose of our study was to explore gig workers’ reactions to perceived PC violation. Our study was set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought workplace health and safety issues into much sharper focus, even in nonstandard employment arrangements like gig work.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a mixed-methods design. In Study 1, we tested a conceptual model of US-based ride-hail drivers’ (n = 202) affective and cognitive reactions to Uber’s (lack of) commitment to safe working conditions. In Study 2, we conducted interviews with 32 platform workers to further explore an unexpected finding from Study 1.

Findings

In Study 1, we found that drivers’ perceptions of PC violation were related to decreased trust in Uber and higher intentions to leave this line of work; however, cynicism toward Uber only predicted withdrawal intentions for those drivers who did not believe that they had job alternatives available outside of gig work. We explored this further in Study 2, where we found that workers with low economic dependence on gig work could afford to be casually cynical toward the platform, while high-dependence workers felt “trapped” in this line of work.

Originality/value

We contribute to the social/relational theoretical approach to gig work more broadly and to the literature on PC in platform work more specifically. We also add to the emerging literature on how economic dependence shapes workers’ experience of platform work. Our findings around low-dependence gig workers experiencing a more indifferent form of cynicism – which we have termed casual cynicism – highlight the importance of treating the context of gig work as unique, not merely an extension of traditional management research.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates the importance of general equilibrium (GE) feedback effects inside and outside markets for the measurement of the efficiency costs of taxes in a distorted economy. Our specific focus is on the changes in environmental amenities that can result from pollution externalities generated from production activities. Even when amenities are under three percent of virtual income, the error in the GE approximations of the welfare effects of new taxes with pre-existing distortions can increase threefold. The nature of the link between the source of the external effects influencing amenities and the changes in amenity services can alter the conclusions one would make about the merits of an intervention based on benefit–cost analyses.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the association between goodwill defined as difference between market and book value of equity and reports of nonrecurring items, namely, special items, discontinued operations and extraordinary items to suggest information related to restructuring activities measured by these items can link the valuation and incentive roles of accounting. Economic intuition suggests that successful managerial efforts should increase firm value. Yet, the link between the valuation and stewardship roles of earnings has been difficult to verify.

Design/methodology/approach

The author first estimates whether nonrecurring items have an incremental ability to explain goodwill, measured as the difference between market and book value of equity, at the industry level and then estimates whether firm-specific accounting bias is associated with the industry-level signals sent by nonrecurring items. The author then analyzes whether these items are associated with the use of chief executive officer (CEO) market-based compensation.

Findings

The author’ results show that information contained in special items increases firm-specific goodwill, indicating that it sends signals to investors about future growth opportunities, while that of discontinued operations reduces goodwill, suggesting that it provides signals about the adjustments of book value. She does not find any significant informational role for extraordinary items. She also finds that the signals sent by special items are negatively associated with the use of CEO market-based compensation, while those relayed by discontinued operations are positively associated with the use of market-based pay.

Research limitations/implications

Contrary to prior studies, the results show special items and discontinued operations are both value and incentive relevant. There are two caveats to this analysis. First, owing to the frequent changes in the definition of discontinued operations, the analysis is conducted using data between 1992 and 2003. Second, some might argue that industry-level incremental R2 might not be appropriate for a compensation analysis. However, entities often use industry norms as a benchmark to set CEO compensation. Thus, it is reasonable to think that industry-level signals matter for executive pay.

Originality/value

The author’s findings suggest that compensation committees in firms across industries consider the information contained in special items and discontinued operations, and selectively alter the level of incentives to encourage managerial efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

Green walls (GWs), comprising living walls and green facades, have been touted as environmentally friendly products in architectural design. GWs can be viable in every aspect of sustainability; they provide residents of buildings with a wide range of economic, social and environmental benefits. Despite this, the adoption rate of GW is still in its infancy stage, and the existing literature concerning the hindrances inhibiting GW adoption is very limited. To address these gaps, the aim of this paper is to identify and prioritize the hindrances to GW adoption in Hong Kong.

Design/methodology/approach

After identifying 17 hindrances through an in-depth review of literature, the fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) is employed to refine the hindrances based on the local context with the help of 21 qualified experts in the field. Subsequently, Fuzzy Parsimonious Analytic Hierarchy Process (FPAHP) is exploited as a recently developed technique to prioritize the identified hindrances.

Findings

Results reveal that the most significant hindrances to the adoption of GW are maintenance cost, high installation cost, difficulties in maintenance, sophisticated implementation and inducement to fire. Findings call for scholars to address ways to improve GW installation practices and methods in order to eradicate the hindrances and provide lessons for policymakers, assisting them in facilitating the larger-scale adoption of GW.

Originality/value

Considering the dearth of studies on hindrances to the adoption of GWs, this paper provides a comprehensive outlook of the issue, providing knowledge that can be used as a building block for future scholars within the field. It also provides valuable insights for stakeholders within the construction industry about the hindrances to the adoption of GWs which could direct their efforts toward better implementation of it.

Abstract

This paper assesses the strength of the evidence on the impact of the physical environment on mental health and well‐being. Using a systematic review methodology, quantitative and qualitative evaluative studies of the effect of the physical environment on child and adult mental health published in English between January 1990 and September 2005 were sought from citation databases. The physical environment was defined in terms of built or natural elements of residential or neighbourhood environments; mental health was defined in terms of psychological symptoms and diagnoses. A total of 99 papers were identified. The strength of the evidence varied and was strongest for the effects of urban birth (on risk of schizophrenia), rural residence (on risk of suicide for males), neighbourhood violence, housing and neighbourhood regeneration, and neighbourhood disorder. The strength of the evidence for an effect of poor housing on mental health was weaker. There was a lack of robust research, and of longitudinal research in many areas, and some aspects of the environment have been very little studied to date. The lack of evidence of environmental effects in some domains does not necessarily mean that there are no effects: rather, that they have not yet been studied or studied meaningfully.
