Abstract

A finite element model for numerical simulation of non‐steady but continuous chip formation under orthogonal cutting conditions is described. The problem is treated as coupled thermo‐mechanical. A velocity approach has been adopted for the proposed solution. The computational algorithm takes care of dynamic contact conditions and makes use of an automatic remeshing procedure. The results of simulation yield complete history of chip initiation and growth as well as distributions of strain rate, strain, stress and temperature. The paper includes a detailed presentation of computational results for an illustrative case.

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

The aim of this paper is to help the users of FE and BE techniques to get better value from a large collection of papers on the subjects. Abstract

Purpose

Oil‐in‐water (O/W) emulsion has been used in industrial rolling mills for many decades, but its lubrication mechanism is still not adequately understood. There is a need to understand the role of chemical ingredients and emulsifier in lubrication and tribological characteristics of rolling oil. With this purpose, the authors selected three commercially available O/W emulsions of different generations and of known industrial performance. The aim is to understand the lubrication mechanism of these rolling oils and to correlate the laboratory findings with that of industrial rolling mills.

Design/methodology/approach

The lubrication mechanism has been studied with the help of an ultra thin film interferometry EHD test rig, an advanced experimental rolling mill and a Coulter LS 230 instrument. Film thickness, rolling parameters and droplet size were measured. The coefficient of friction was computed with the help of the measured values of rolling parameters. Emulsion stability and saponification value (SAP) of the selected emulsions were also determined. The results of film thickness, rolling parameters and droplet size have been presented. The lubrication mechanism of the emulsions has been explained on the basis of film thickness, droplet size, emulsion stability, SAP value and coefficient of friction.

Findings

Results of the present study reveal that chemistry of O/W emulsions plays an important role in their film forming and tribological behavior. Rolling emulsions of relatively low stability, higher droplet size and high SAP value are found to provide better lubrication and lower coefficient of friction. The results of the present study correlate well with the actual industrial experience except those obtained on EHD test rig.

Research limitations/implications

Coulter LS 230 instrument was available with M/s LUBRIZOL CORP., USA. Only limited study on droplet size was carried. Although the study carried out has given good information but it would have been more practical if the emulsion samples taken from the experimental mill stand would have been studied for droplet size.

Practical implications

From understanding point of view of lubrication mechanism of O/W emulsion, it will be useful for oil technologists, tribologists and rolling mill users.

Originality/value

The study is original in nature and gives information on lubrication mechanism of O/W emulsions in steel cold rolling of steel strips.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the problem of the steady plane oblique stagnation-point flow of an electrically conducting Newtonian fluid impinging on a heated vertical sheet. The temperature of the plate varies linearly with the distance from the stagnation point.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using the similarity transformations. The system is then solved numerically using the “bvp4c” function in MATLAB.

Findings

An exact similarity solution of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Navier–Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation is obtained. Numerical solutions of the relevant functions and the structure of the flow field are presented and discussed for several values of the parameters which influence the motion: the Hartmann number, the parameter describing the oblique part of the motion, the Prandtl number (Pr) and the Richardson numbers. Dual solutions exist for several values of the parameters.

Originality value

The present results are original and new for the problem of MHD mixed convection oblique stagnation-point flow of a Newtonian fluid over a vertical flat plate, with the effect of induced magnetic field and temperature.

Abstract

Purpose

Traditional procedures in flat pattern design of aircraft sheet metal parts are generally based on technicians' personal idea and experiences which can cause unwanted inconsistency and errors. The main objective of this paper is to present an automated system for decreasing the time and increasing the accuracy in providing templates used in aircraft sheet metal parts manufacturing.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper discusses the software (Developer) which is able to receive 2D drawing of a part and create the flat pattern template after applying the necessary changes. The system is also capable of supplying other components of sheet metal part template such as support, tooling hole, and lightening hole. AutoLISP has been used as a tool for internal access to a commercial software such as AutoCAD. An interface has been written by Visual Basic for Application (VBA) to enable the user easily to apply the subroutines related to the software system.

Findings

Several algorithms have been developed and the necessary subroutines have been written in an integrated user‐friendly package. To clarify the process and its application, an application example is demonstrated.

Originality/value

The paper can provide automatically components that are not originally provided in other commercial software. It also has the ability to calculate spring‐back and provide unfold drawing. The known standard templates can also be created.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of brand names and product types on bicultural’s purchasing intention. In cross-cultural marketing, a current popular position among bicultural consumer advocates that brand name that has a foreign character denotes that when an unknown brand is present, and if the unknown brand is a hedonic product, then a foreign character that has a long-standing history of delivery quality products should be mandatory.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a multidisciplinary literature review, qualitatively supported differences in bicultural consumers from a majority-minority status are reviewed and formulated as hypotheses, and a survey is used to collect quantitative data from a stratified random sample.

Findings

A 2 (cultural identity vs felt ethnicity) × 2 (English brand name vs Japanese brand name) factorial experiment, which tested this contention, revealed that, although consumers are considered biculturals, they will be more inclined to perceive products to be of higher quality when the product is written in Japanese than in English. Furthermore, the result shows that felt ethnicity has a significant impact on attitude toward brand names, whereas bicultural’s cultural identity does not. However, on the other hand, cultural identity has a significant impact on the product type considered, whereas felt ethnicity does not.

Research limitations/implications

As a starting point for understanding the bicultural consumer from a majority-minority perspective, this study is subject to exploratory research limitations.

Practical implications

The result suggests that when developing ads, managers should take into account the effect of language characters has on their target audience’s ethnicity. As it is common for ads to consist of written language, colors, images and messages, managers should not just concentrate on one, rather should consider how all these factors can come together and create a favorable ad.

Originality/value

As the number of immigrants increase in the USA, the notion of considering what a melting pot is has reached another level. Predicted by the US census, in the year 2050, the minority population will take over the mainstream population, resulting in a majority-minority status for these minority individuals. Businesses will then have to redesign their strategy in marketing to this new market segment and not fall victim to these new challenges. They can turn around and leverage them as marketplace opportunities. This study provides some early insights that can help marketers strategically and creatively think of leverage such opportunities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the evolution of inspection and maintenance (I&M) practices used for aging and newly built oil and gas (O&G) facilities. It also proposes a framework and an approach for mechanizing inspection planning to perform preventive maintenance (PM) activities, taking technical condition (TC) and relative degradation (RD) into consideration.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper systematically collects, categorizes, and analyzes the published literature of both researchers and practitioners. It also utilizes industrial experience that has been accrued and utilized from inspection planning practices for static mechanical equipment on aging O&G production plants.

Findings

The paper defines significant issues in I&M of O&G assets related to: different philosophies; stakeholders’ requirements trade-off; dependability and asset deterioration challenges; items interacting with inspection planning mechanization processes and I&M optimization approaches. A framework is identified to mechanize the inspection planning process in order to reduce the effect arising from human involvement, while improving the effective utilization of data from different sources. The suggested approach improves the quality of an inspection program, while minimizing the variability and cost to the engineering contractors as well as to the owners of O&G facilities.

Practical implications

The mechanization of inspection planning (MIP) is vital to have inspection programs with uniform quality. The currently employed inspection practices face challenges in maintaining uniform quality from one inspection program to another due to the variability present in the planning process, especially among the different inspection planning engineers. The suggested fuzzy logic-based MIP supports the minimization of the variability and increases the quality of inspection programs.

Originality/value

The paper provides a comprehensive review of research contributions and industrial development efforts. These will be useful to the life cycle stakeholders in both academia and industry in understanding the inspection planning problem and solution space within the O&G asset I&M context.

Abstract

Purpose

Reliability and maintainability estimation of any system depends on the identification of the best-fitted probability distribution of failure and repair rates. The parameters of the best-fitted probability distribution are also contributing significantly to reliability estimation. In this work, a case study of load haul dump (LHD) machines is illustrated that consider the optimization of failure and repair rate parameters using two well established metaheuristic approaches, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). This paper aims to analyze the aforementioned points.

Design/methodology/approach

The data on time between failures (TBF) and time to repairs (TTR) are collected for a LHD machine. The descriptive statistical analysis of TBF & TTR data is performed, trend and serial correlation tested and using Anderson–Darling (AD) value best-fitted distributions are identified for repair and failure times of various subsystems. The traditional methods of estimation like maximum likelihood estimation, method of moments, least-square estimation method help only in finding the local solution. Here, for finding the global solution two well-known metaheuristic approaches are applied.

Findings

The reliability of the LHD machine after 60 days on the real data set is 28.55%, using GA on 250 generations is 17.64%, and using PSO on 100 generations and 100 iterations is 30.25%. The PSO technique gives the global best value of reliability.

Practical implications

The present work will be very convenient for reliability engineers, researchers and maintenance managers to understand the failure and repair pattern of LHD machines. The same methodology can be applied in other process industries also.

Originality/value

In this case study, initially likelihood function of the best-fitted distribution is optimized by GA and PSO. Reliability and maintainability of LHD machines evaluated by the traditional approach, GA and PSO are compared. These results will be very helpful for maintenance engineers to plan new maintenance strategies for better functioning of LHD machines.
