Abstract
This chapter focuses on military couples and factors that affect their experiences of work, stress, and health using a life course perspective. An introduction to the definition of military couples is provided followed by a brief review of previous research on marital quality and divorce among military couples. The core of the chapter describes the advantages of using a life course perspective to examine the military life course for couples, and two critical transitions of military life are more fully examined. Specifically, periodic relocation and deployment and their impacts on military couples are reviewed in detail. Future directions for research on military couples are provided, and the use of the Convoy Model of Social Relations as an integrative approach to examine military personnel and family members’ stress and health across the military life course is introduced.

Abstract
WITH record attendances during the first days of the Motor Show this year, Exhibitors are asking if it would not be possible to have certain times, or days, reserved for trade buyers. The promoters are obviously concerned with any possible loss of gate money, but it is very true that at times, when stands are crowded with mere sight‐seers it is very difficult for genuine potential buyers and trade personnel to see what they want in the short time that may be at their disposal. These record attendances may not be repeated always; this year is the first time for a long time that anyone can order any car with a reasonable delivery date, and most cars with only a few weeks wait.

Abstract
Since the war there has been an increasing interest in the advantages of standardisation and simplification, both as safeguards for the consumer and as a means of raising productivity and reducing costs … Although standards are generally described as of two types, “functional” and “dimensional,” they are probably better grouped into four, according to whether the specification is by performance, chemical and physical properties, or dimensions, or is for purposes of “communication” and recognition.
PLANNED maintenance infers the existing of a system of plant inspection together with definite and regular action which will eliminate (so far as possible) risk of breakdown.

Abstract
IN considering the properties possessed by lubricating oils priority is generally given to viscosity which is not only a most important criterion of performance but can be measured easily and expressed quantitatively. This is reflected in the systems agreed by such groups as the (American) Society of Automotive Engineers (S.A.E.), the American Gear Manufacturers' Association (A.G.M.A.) and so on. Those who have been associated with the selection and application of lubricants will no doubt have been confused by the various systems which classify viscosity for only limited purposes. In recent years there has developed a greater awareness of the need for a single, logical viscosity system which can be applied to all industrial lubricants regardless of purpose. While it is still true that “there is not enough reliable information now available as regards test methods to permit writing workable oil purchase specifications which would within themselves, without performance tests, serve as a reliable guide in the selection of lubricants”, a necessary first step is the preparation of a universally acceptable viscosity classification.

Abstract
The Presidential Address to the Liverpool Engineering Society by Mr. Farthing (the salient points of which are reproduced in this issue) has particular bearing upon lubrication and especially on young lubrication engineers. Mr. Farthing stressed the very wide field open to young engineers and the difficulties associated with training in order to cover as wide a field as may be necessary. It is usually so important to gain a wide knowledge before one can specialise and this is certainly the case with lubrication engineers. One cannot begin to fully appreciate the intricacies of a lubrication system with all its accessory components lubricating and guarding, for example, a large motive power plant or rolling mill, until one has more than a mere working knowledge of the plant itself, the duties it must perform, how it performs them and the snags that arise which might be overcome by correct lubrication. In view of the fact that lubrication systems are just as important in a textile mill as in a power station or a large brick works, the almost impossible‐to‐achieve‐range of knowledge that would simplify the work of a lubrication engineer is very obvious. Fortunately, lubricating principles apply to most cases and knowing how to apply one's knowledge from basic principles is the key to success in this difficult profession.

Abstract
The lubricating properties of a variety of metal surfaces interposed by a variety of lubricants can be derived to a great extent by a running test, accelerated by heavy loading, whereby friction, temperature and wear can be measured.

Abstract
EVEN after large schemes of plant modernisation involving the installation of new machinery and the rebirth of old, there are still many items of plant which, because of shortages of replacement parts or lack of capital with which to replace them, are doing necessary work but inefficiently and at low rates of production. The answer, to Management's queries as to how best to improve productivity and reduce running costs with the minimum of outlay, is, in many cases, lubrication. The paramount role played by lubrication in industry is undoubtedly its application to old plant. The outlay is relatively small; the benefits may be enormous.

Abstract
The demand for stainless steels as journal materials coincides with the incorporation of these steels into designs where their inherent properties have been not only desirable but, in many cases, necessary for the purpose to which they are to be put.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on threatened egoism theory, tournament theory and the extended agency model of narcissism, this paper aims to compare the effects of two different forms of grandiose narcissism of employees, namely, narcissistic rivalry (NR) and narcissistic admiration (NA), on knowledge hiding (HIDE), and investigate the potential mediating mechanism and boundary conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on a three-wave survey of 296 participants recruited from six high-tech enterprises in China, the paper tests the proposed model by performing partial least squares structural equation modeling and a bias-corrected bootstrapping procedure.
Findings
The results indicate that NR facilitates knowledge hiding, while NA inhibits employees’ knowledge-hiding behavior. Emotional exhaustion plays a significant mediating role between NR and HIDE, and interpersonal trust negatively mediates the relationship between NA and HIDE. Moreover, interactional justice perception not only weakens the positive correlation between NR and emotional exhaustion but also weakens the indirect influence of NR on HIDE via emotional exhaustion. On the contrary, interactional justice perception strengthens the impact of NA on interpersonal trust, thus enhancing the mediating effect of NA on HIDE.
Originality/value
The present study expands the literature on knowledge management by addressing the underlying paradoxes of grandiose narcissistic employees’ HIDE behavior based on different connotations of narcissism and revealing the intervening mechanism with interactive justice perception as the moderator.
