Abstract
Printed circuit boards are scanned with a CCD linescan camera and a motorised table, under the control of a microcomputer. The camera signal is thresholded to produce a binary image of the track pattern, and this image is processed further in the microcomputer. The processing consists partly of comparisons against a stored master track pattern, and partly of an examination of the scanned track pattern alone to detect anomalies such as whiskers and broken tracks. The system will detect all defects so far presented to it, with an acceptable false alarm rate.

Inspection is an activity that controls the outgoing product quality and involves search, detection and measurement or diagnosis. Traditionally, inspection tasks have been allocated to humans. Attempts to automate industrial inspection in order to eliminate errors and alleviate monotony have faced difficulties due to technological limitations and/or prohibitive implementation costs. An occasional compromise is partial automation (hybrid inspection). Reviews published research in manual, hybrid and automated inspection to understand the current research status.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to design an automatic inspection system for the characters on tire molds, which involves a vision-based inspection method for the characters on tire molds.
Design/methodology/approach
An automatic inspection equipment is designed according to the features of the tire mold. To implement the inspection task, the corresponding image processing methods are designed, including image preprocessing, image mosaic, image locating and character inspection. Image preprocessing mainly contains fitting the contours of the acquired tire mold images and those of the computer aided design (CAD) as the arcs of two circles and polar transformation of the acquired images and the CAD. Then, the authors propose a novel framework to locate the acquired images into the corresponding mosaicked tire mold image. Finally, a character inspection scheme is proposed by combining an support-vector-machine-based character recognition method and a string matching approach. At the stages of image locating and character inspection, image mosaic is simultaneously used to label the defects in the mosaicked tire mold image, which is based on histograms-of-gradients features.
Findings
The experimental results indicate that the designed automatic inspection system can inspect the characters on the tire mold with a high accuracy at a reasonable time consumption.
Practical implications
The designed automatic inspection system can detect the carving faults for the characters on the tire molds, which are the cases that the characters are wrongly added, deleted or modified on the tire mold.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first automatic vision-based inspection system for the characters on tire molds. An inspection equipment is designed and many novel image processing methods are proposed to implement the inspection task. The designed system can be widely applied in the industry.

Abstract
Purpose
This main purpose of this study is to summarize the experience at the Construction Technology and Management Center (CTMC) to develop a Digitalizing Construction Monitoring (DCM) system by integrating 3DAutoCAD drawings and digital images. The objective of this paper is to propose a framework model for the DCM system and discuss in detail the steps involved for developing and calculating the 3D coordinate values from 2D digital images.
Design/methodology/approach
As digital images are one of the major sources of information from site, the process of measuring the project progress from images is quite challenging. This study used Photogrammetry techniques to extract the information from digital images, which can be concisely defined as the science of calculating 3D object coordinates from images, with PhotoModeler pro‐version software. Issues pertaining to the quality of the 3D model derived from 2D digital images are also discussed.
Findings
A framework model for DCM was proposed and different phases were discussed. A pilot case study on Larkin Mosque Car Parking Project was conducted to check the validity of using Photogrammetry techniques to extract 3D coordinate values by using PhotoModeler Software. Preliminary results show that significant control has been achieved to extract 3D coordinate values from 2D digital images, which and can be integrated into the digitalized system to automate the construction project monitoring process.
Originality/value
The techniques discussed in this paper are used for monitoring the project progress systematically. The results of this study will be incorporated to develop a fully automated project progress monitoring system, which can be updated automatically as the project progresses automatically.

This book is a policy proposal aimed at the democratic left. It is concerned with gradual but radical reform of the socio‐economic system. An integrated policy of industrial and economic democracy, which centres around the establishment of a new sector of employee‐controlled enterprises, is presented. The proposal would retain the mix‐ed economy, but transform it into a much better “mixture”, with increased employee‐power in all sectors. While there is much of enduring value in our liberal western way of life, gross inequalities of wealth and power persist in our society.
