Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to enhance the line congestion and to minimize power loss. Transmission line congestion is considered the most acute trouble during the operation of the power system. Therefore, congestion management acts as an effective tool in using the available power without breaking the system hindrances or limitations.

Design/methodology/approach

Over the past few years, determining the optimal location and size of the devices have pinched a great deal of consideration. Numerous approaches have been established to mitigate the congestion rate, and this paper aims to enhance the line congestion and minimize power loss by determining the compensation rate and optimal location of a thyristor-switched capacitor (TCSC) using adaptive moth swarm optimization (AMSO) algorithm.

Findings

An AMSO algorithm uses the performances of moth flame and the chaotic local search-based shrinking scheme of the bacterial foraging optimization algorithm. The proposed AMSO approach is executed and discussed for the IEEE-30 bus system for determining the optimal location of single TCSC and dual TCSC.

Originality/value

In addition to this, the proposed algorithm is compared with various other existing approaches, and the results thus obtained provide better performances than other techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to review and classify scientific publications dealing with those innovative solutions aimed at increasing the efficiency of last-mile delivery in business to consumer (B2C) e-commerce; and, second, to outline directions for future research in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

The review is based on 75 papers published between 2001 and 2019 in international peer-reviewed journals or proceedings of conferences, retrieved from bibliographic databases and science search engines.

Findings

Due to its importance in affecting the overall logistics costs and, as a consequence, the economic sustainability of a B2C e-commerce initiative, last-mile delivery process deserves particular attention in order to be optimised. The review highlights that, among the main factors affecting its cost, there are the probability to have failed deliveries, the customer density in the delivery areas and the degree of automation of the process. Innovative and viable last-mile delivery solutions – which may impact the mentioned drivers – include parcel lockers, crowdsourcing logistics, mapping the consumer presence at home and dynamic pricing policies. Eventually, some gaps and areas for further research activities have been identified (e.g. mapping customer behaviour, crowdsourcing logistics).

Originality/value

This review offers interesting insights to both academics and practitioners. On the academic side, it analyses and classifies relevant literature about innovative and efficiency-oriented last-mile delivery solutions, proposing directions for future research efforts. On the managerial side, it presents a holistic framework of the main factors affecting last-mile delivery cost and of viable innovative solutions that may be implemented to increase efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

Memory plays a vital role in designing embedded systems. A larger memory can accommodate more and larger applications but increases cost area, as well as energy requirements. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to propose code compression techniques to solve this issue by minimizing the code size of the application program by compressing the instructions with higher static frequency.

Design/methodology/approach

The idea is based on the static and dynamic frequency-based algorithm combined with bit mask and dictionary-based algorithm for MIPS32 processor, in order to minimize the code size and improves compression ratio.

Findings

The experimental result shows that the proposed system achieves up to 67 percent compression efficiency.

Originality/value

The paper presents enhanced versions of the code compression technique.

Abstract

Purpose

Increased global air travel and competition in the airline industry entail better service delivery and failure management. This study examines how airline type, failure criticality and the traveller's culture influence travellers' airline evaluations of service failure.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a large data set of customers' online reviews and incorporates quantitative and qualitative feedback from 20 major airlines across the world. Semantic tagging, sentiment and multivariate analyses have been used to analyse the data.

Findings

Failure criticality and travellers' cultural backgrounds significantly affect airline evaluations after service failures. Moreover, failure criticality influences evaluations of travellers from individualistic cultures more severely. Contrary to expectations, full-service airlines were evaluated positively after less critical service failures.

Practical implications

The findings support that customers undergo different emotional states when they experience service failure. Understanding these internal emotional sensitivities and how services would be judged by travellers across cultures can help airlines to better manage their service recovery efforts and to strategise prioritisation of scarce resources.

Originality/value

Though airline service failure has been well researched, this study examines the role of culture in service failure evaluations. The study uses a novel method to analyse a large data set of both quantitative and qualitative traveller feedback useful in service recovery management.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the growing interest regarding companies' sustainability, its social dimension has mostly been neglected by academics and practitioners. Consequently, this study aims to address this issue by investigating if the adoption of human resource (HR) analytics can positively influence the impact of social sustainable operations practices (SSOP) on employees' motivation and engagement and the effect of these lasts on organizational retention.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through online questionnaires addressed to 281 HR managers of heterogeneous companies from Europe and analyzed through a structural equation modeling (SEM) technique.

Findings

The findings confirmed the positive effect of SSOP on employees’ motivation and engagement, and of these last on employees’ retention. Furthermore, they confirmed that the usage of HR analytics positively moderates the relationship between SSOP and employees’ motivation and engagement.

Originality/value

This study contributes to both sustainable operations management and HR management literature streams. First, it adopts a multidisciplinary perspective which also considers evidence from HR management literature, allowing the authors to concentrate on the social dimension of sustainability. Second, it provided further insight regarding the adoption of a data-driven approach in relation to social sustainable operations management. Finally, it contributes to HR analytics-related literature by demonstrating its impact also on organizational aspects that are not directly controlled by the HR department.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the processes of collecting used non-returnable packaging. The objective is to increase the quality and quantity of recycling material used in the production of new packages.

Design/methodology/approach

A reverse logistics network is proposed, nevertheless the focus of the study is addressing the collection routing problem. Specifically a new “profitable visit algorithm” (PVA) based on the well-known Nearest Neighbor is proposed and tested, in both real and simulated scenarios, in order to achieve higher volume of collected material while lowering the cost of collection.

Findings

The proposed algorithm is set to compete against the well-known Nearest Neighbor. The “PVA” showed a far better performance than the Nearest Neighbor. The latter was assessed with real data in a real scenario and was also confirmed by a simulation.

Research limitations/implications

Further research should envisage stochastic models and tighter time constraints.

Practical implications

Managers can use the algorithm in similar scenarios to address different routing needs. New business activities could be foreseen by starting a logistics scheme of this type. Additionally, new savings in material procurement processes could be achieved in current operations.

Social implications

Social responsibility and environmental awareness can be approached by this type of endeavors. While reducing waste disposal, the recovering of these materials yields savings and offer new labor opportunities for people.

Originality/value

The “PVA” introduced in this paper, showed substantial advantages. First it automatically determines the visit frequency for each client. Also, it evaluates whether a visit should be granted or not based on its “profitability.” The latter ensures that even if the routing circuit is broken at any moment, the company will not lose “profit.” Additionally, this research provides performance evaluation in real and simulated scenarios, which is hard to obtain in a single study.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the potential mechanisms through which regulatory focus influences employee work-related outcomes. The effects of a dual model of regulatory focus on job satisfaction and turnover intention were investigated through psychological contracts.

Design/methodology/approach

The data of a survey of 370 recruits (306 male newcomers and 64 female newcomers) in a Taiwanese military recruitment center provided significant support for the hypothesized dual model.

Findings

The results revealed that regulatory focus was positively related to either job satisfaction or turnover intention. A relational contract mediated the relationship between promotion focus and job satisfaction, whereas a transactional contract mediated prevention focus and turnover intention.

Research limitations/implications

The study results may not apply to other sectors because data were collected only at a military unit in Taiwan. Using Taiwanese military personnel may limit the generalization of the results to those unemployed in civilian samples or those in other countries. Samples from different countries are important to establish whether the results from the study apply to other situations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first regulatory focus theory (RFT)-based study to report on the regulatory focus of newcomers as mediating the relationship between purposeful and work-related outcomes.

Practical implications

Previous research has found that individuals with a different goal orientation may adopt different behaviors that result in different performance levels. The results here imply that newcomers with transactional contracts have intentions to leave their organizations and perceive their relationships with their organizations according to rational choice theory.

Originality/value

Newcomers' distinctive self-regulatory systems and focus on meeting either nurturance or security needs were determined to get different outcomes following organizational entry. The results demonstrated that promotion-focused newcomers were satisfied with the military, whereas prevention-focused newcomers intended to leave within their first 18 weeks.

Abstract

In recent times, mobile banking has become the best alternative for transactions associated with payments like bills, fees, and peer-to-peer payments. Therefore, the pace of adoption is increasing day after other. However, the numbers of customers are not equal to the expectations as there are several challenges and threats hindering in the way of excellence and growth of mobile banking. Therefore, this chapter has been written purposively to address all the elements that are associated with the use of mobile banking with special emphasis on Pakistan and other developing sides of Asia. In fact, concern towards Asian sides is mandatory as the continent has the massive charm to attract users towards the use of mobile banking, but there is a need for proper policy and concern from stakeholders in order to give a push to the technology, which is fruitful for society, environment, as well as economy. The study includes an in-depth discussion on factors that need attention to make the study implicative and thorough for conducting further research in the field of Fin-Tech and mobile banking.
