Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the international literature on sports events published between 1981 and 2024 within the framework of specific parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were analyzed using quantitative and bibliometric analyses. Studies related to sports events were scanned through the Scopus database, and 1,072 studies were evaluated.

Findings

It has been revealed that the highest number of studies related to sports events were published in 2021, with Tichaawa, T.M. being the author with the most publications. Griffith University conducted the most studies on this topic, and the United States had the highest number of publications. Additionally, the findings indicate that the number of studies on sports events is increasing, with more studies being conducted in business and social sciences. Regarding keyword usage frequency, the studies focus on destination image, economic impact, and sustainability. Clustering analysis results show that the studies are divided into four clusters, focusing on sports, tourism, and tourism development.

Research limitations/implications

Due to methodological limitations, the results of bibliometric analysis generally focus on metrics related to articles, sources, and authors. Another limitation is the examination of studies in the context of tourism that are published in the international literature and accessible only through the Scopus database in English. An additional limitation is that the publications analyzed in this study are specifically on sports events. This study aims to fill a gap in the field by examining sports event studies in the international literature, thereby providing researchers with a holistic perspective. It is considered significant as it will offer a different viewpoint on bibliometric studies related to sports events and sports tourism in the international literature, both in terms of the parameters used in the study and the study’s focus.

Originality/value

It is believed to be important because it is the first bibliometric study explicitly conducted on sports events.

Abstract

The following classified, annotated list of titles is intended to provide reference librarians with a current checklist of new reference books, and is designed to supplement the RSR review column, “Recent Reference Books,” by Frances Neel Cheney. “Reference Books in Print” includes all additional books received prior to the inclusion deadline established for this issue. Appearance in this column does not preclude a later review in RSR. Publishers are urged to send a copy of all new reference books directly to RSR as soon as published, for immediate listing in “Reference Books in Print.” Reference books with imprints older than two years will not be included (with the exception of current reprints or older books newly acquired for distribution by another publisher). The column shall also occasionally include library science or other library related publications of other than a reference character.

Abstract

Of the parameters that may be adjusted to give the helicopter freedom from ground resonance, that which is ignored most frequently is Λ3 (ratio of effective rotor mass to effective fuselage mass). This is because it is usually impractical to change it on an existing helicopter. However, if it is considered sufficiently early in the design of the fuselage, the ground resonance problem can be greatly reduced or even eliminated by the consideration of this parameter alone. The paper investigates the effects of fuselage dynamic properties on Λ3 and also gives results for the effect of Λ3 on the stability boundaries for some simple helicopter configurations.

Abstract

Researchers have written extensively on the partnering approach in project procurement. Some emphasize it as a process, i.e. how it works in terms of the project structure, signing of agreements, etc., and others emphasize the nature of the partnering culture dimensions, i.e. how it works in terms of operating in trust and harmony. It is postulated that the Confucian concept of self‐cultivation is central to the development of the values of trust and harmony. Western perspectives on the partnering culture are relatively abundant in writing; the intention of this paper is to complement existing literature with an Eastern perspective to develop a behavioural model of partnering. This paper examines the partnering dimensions and postulates that an understanding of (1) the Eastern concept of self and self‐cultivation, and (2) the central role of goal setting at strategic and project levels will enhance goal attainment in partnering.

Abstract

Michael Kami, president of Corporate Planning Inc., recently said that “the success of an organization depends on the individual and collective knowledge of its people”. This is very true, and highlights the importance of staying ahead in your particular field. The difficulties lie in deciding how to stay ahead. What strategies should be used, where it should be done and how much it will cost, are just a few of the issues that need to be addressed before tackling the knowledge debate.

Abstract

The need for work as such, along with physical need, are the two fundamental needs that flow directly from the materiality of human nature. For this reason, these two needs, taken together, are referred to as human material need. The embodiment of human beings is crucial for both social economics and the social economy, because without embodiment there would be no human material need and without that need there would be no social economy and therefore no social economics. This article proceeds from three main premises: (1) Man is not an object but a person, and for that reason matters much; (2) Work is organised and performed through two main modes conforming to the duality of human nature – these modes are referred to as teamwork and contribution; (3) Work has two main effects on persons conforming also to the duality of human nature – these modes are referred to as individual development and belonging.

Abstract

The research steam on tourism destination image, begun in the late 1960s, has been essentially operational in its approach, and only occasionally strategic. Aspects relating to the image of tourism destinations still constitute a relatively unexplored line of research. This paper, first establishes specific conceptual and methodological approaches, to enable us to rigorously study and evaluate the image of what we understand as a tourism destination characterized by “sun and beach”. It then applies this methodological proposition to a number of destinations in the Caribbean, focusing on the case of Cuba from an important tourist‐origin market for this destination, Spain.
