Abstract

Purpose

A staff canteen in the workplace can offer a healthier diet, which may lower the blood pressure (BP). The purpose of this paper is to evaluate whether the presence of staff canteen in the workplace is associated with consumption of healthy food and lower systolic and diastolic BP.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was conducted, randomly selecting workers through a multistage sampling, stratified by company size in Brazil. Demographic, socioeconomic, and life style characteristics were evaluated, and weight, height, and BP were measured. Statistical analysis used generalized linear models, controlling for design effect and confounding factors, to assess the association between BP and staff canteen and the intake of food items.

Findings

In total, 4.818 workers, aged 35.4±10.7 years, 76.5 percent men, with 8.7±4.1 years of formal education were enrolled. Prevalence of hypertension was 24.7 percent (p-value <0.001) among workers from industries with staff canteen vs 30.6 percent among those with no staff canteen. Workers of industries with staff canteen consumed higher proportion of fruits, green leafy vegetables, and milk than workers of industries without canteen, and had lower systolic and diastolic BP, independently of the frequency of intake.

Practical implications

Workers of industries with staff canteen consumed a healthier diet, and had lower systolic and diastolic BP, and lower prevalence of hypertension than workers from workplaces without staff canteen.

Originality/value

This study was the first carried out among workers of industries reporting that the presence of a staff canteen in the workplace is associated with lower systolic and diastolic BP and prevalence of hypertension.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the inhibition performance of an aqueous extract of Matricaria recutita chamomile on the corrosion of S235JR steel in 0.5 M NaCl by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization measurements.

Design/methodology/approach

The inhibition performance was investigated using EIS and polarization measurements. Surface analysis demonstrates the presence of a protective layer on the steel surface in the presence of the extract. Quantum chemical parameters calculated for the molecules contained in the aqueous extract are interpreted to predict the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the considered extract.

Findings

The inhibition efficiency of chamomile aqueous extract for S235JR steel increases with increasing amounts of plant concentration and with an increase in the immersion time. The optimal inhibition efficiency of chamomile extract, 98.90 per cent, was achieved for S235JR steel when immersed in 15 per cent v/v of extract concentration for 2 h. The surface analysis in the absence and presence of the chamomile extract confirmed the formation of a protective layer on steel surface. The quantum chemical calculations allowed to explain the great inhibition efficiency values by interpreting the calculated quantum parameters.

Originality/value

This is the first study carrying out an experimental and theoretical investigation on M. recutita chamomile as a green corrosion inhibitor, with interesting potential industrial applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumer centrism’s perspectives serve as crucial determinants in decision-making processes, yet the burgeoning discourse on global marketing’s interplay with tourism scarcely addresses the nuanced interconnections between consumer dispositions toward global or local destinations, which assert a global preference bias in developing countries and their predilections for tourist destination selection. This study aims to elucidate the dynamics between ethnocentric and xenocentric dispositions and the selection of domestic tourist locales within developing countries, conditioned to perceived authentic experiences.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a sample of 264 tourists, we employed structural equation modeling and mediation analysis to determine the direct and indirect interplay of consumer centrism and the mechanisms of authenticity for destination choice and latent class analysis to unveil consumer heterogeneous profiles and their implications.

Findings

The results suggest the existence of a polycentric consumer due to the strong preference for domestic destinations among ethnocentric consumers. While xenocentrism did not have a similar direct impact, its influence on local destination choice emerged through the mediating effect of perceived authenticity. This finding provides evidence for the assumption of a global preference bias in developing nations, even within tourism contexts. Additionally, we identified four distinct heterogeneous tourist profiles based on consumer inclinations toward global and local aspects, allowing for a detailed exploration of their specific influences on tourism destinations.

Practical implications

Effective tourism strategies in developing countries can boost the economy based on authenticity, creating experiences that consider the duality of tourist inclinations and promoting cultural preservation. Practical examples include cultural events, themed tours, personalized marketing, influencer partnerships, social media engagement and loyalty programs, all aimed at engaging diverse consumer groups and strengthening consumer connections toward the local and xenocentric dispositions.

Originality/value

The study advances our understanding by proposing a polycentric profile of consumer inclinations toward tourism in developing countries, driven by the perceived authenticity of destinations. This profile highlights the nuanced interplay between ethnocentric and xenocentric dispositions, illustrating how local and global preferences coexist and influence travel decisions. By emphasizing the role of authenticity, the study provides valuable insights into the factors shaping tourism behaviors in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The advent of the postpandemic era has brought renewed attention to the development of business tourism. However, the existing research on business tourism is fragmented, and there are gaps in the current understanding of the subject. This study aims to identify the intellectual structures, current hotspots and research directions in the business tourism field from 1994 to 2023.

Abstract

Purpose

Contextual to the recognition of the complex interplay between health and behavioral aspects, integrated behavioral health (IBH) has emerged. Although this model is becoming popular in the Western world, its presence in the global context is not promising. This paper aims to explore the need for IBH in India and address its barriers to implementation and possible solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

We analyzed the case of IBH and its potential implications for India using the current evidence base, authors' reflections and experience of implementing similar programs.

Findings

This paper identifies contextual factors, including increased instances of non-communicable diseases and psychosocial and cultural determinants of health, that necessitate the implementation of IBH programs in India. The key features of different IBH models and their applicability are outlined. The current status of IBH and potential challenges in implementation in India in terms of human resources and other factors are delineated. We also discuss the potential models for implementing IBH in India.

Originality/value

Integrating behavioral health in primary care is considered an effective and sustainable model to promote health and well-being across various target populations. Towards this end, this paper is the first to discuss the contextual factors of IBH in India. It is a significant addition to the knowledge base on IBH and its possible implementation barriers and strategies in low- and middle-income countries.
