Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this two-part paper is to provide a summary of current research opportunities in organizational forgetting literature and a future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

The summary of current research opportunities and future research agenda is drawn from the systematic literature review and synthesis reported in Part I.

Findings

Two broad areas for future research are proposed: A first area that highlights a need to address integrative theoretical challenges that include issues of temporality, history, power dynamics, and organizational context. A second area that highlights a need to reconcile contradicting explanations – such as whether technological sophistication and codification practices versus social networks prevent knowledge depreciation and loss – through a multilevel perspective.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations relate to time span coverage and journal article accessibility.

Originality/value

This Part II paper provides a summary of current research opportunities and offers directions for future research on organizational forgetting.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate how managers influence accidental and intentional organizational forgetting, i.e. knowledge depreciation, knowledge loss and unlearning.

Design/methodology/approach

The literature was reviewed based on predetermined search terms to identify peer-reviewed articles published in English and available in full-text format from the EBSCOhost and Google Scholar databases. Empirical and theoretical contributions were included. Additional articles, books and book chapters were manually selected and included based on recent reviews and syntheses of organizational forgetting work.

Findings

Findings revealed that managers contributed to preventing accidental knowledge depreciation and loss and preserving organizational memory. With respect to intentional forgetting, findings revealed contradictory positions: on the one hand, managers contributed to the disbandment of existing beliefs and frames of reference, but on the other hand, they preserved existing knowledge and power structures.

Research limitations/implications

The study was limited by the accessibility of subscribed journals and databases, research scope and time span.

Practical implications

This paper provides useful guidelines to managers who need to reduce the disruptive effects of accidental forgetting or plan intentional forgetting, i.e. managed unlearning.

Originality/value

This paper represents a first attempt to review and define the influence of managers on organizational forgetting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to systematically review and synthesize the literature on organizational forgetting.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review approach was used to synthesize current theoretical and empirical studies on organizational forgetting.

Findings

The review and synthesis of the literature revealed that the organizational forgetting literature is fragmented, with studies conducted across disparate fields and using different methodologies; two primary modes (i.e. accidental and purposeful) and three foci (i.e. knowledge depreciation, knowledge loss and unlearning) define current organizational forgetting literature; and the factors that influence organizational forgetting can be grouped into four clusters related to individuals, processes, tools and organizational context.

Research limitations/implications

This literature review has limitations related to time span coverage and journal article accessibility.

Originality/value

This paper offers an integrative view of organizational forgetting that proposes a holistic and multilevel research approach and systematic synthesis of organizational forgetting research.

Abstract

Cuba has recently endured the impact of hurricanes Lili (1996), George (1998), Irene (1999), Michelle (2001), Isidore (2002), Lili (2002), Charlie and Ivan (2004). The provinces of Villa Clara, Matanzas and Pinar del Río have suffered the major damage, basically in coastal towns where thousands of houses have been destroyed, and families displaced from their homes.

Tackling this problem proves to be complicated. Decision-makers face two choices: (a) to concentrate the scarce resources - including post disaster aid - on emergency actions to reduce only the damages caused by the hurricane, or (b) to improve in a sustainable way existing houses through better and more efficient material supply. In both cases, the possibility of local production of building materials becomes a crucial factor.

The Centre for Investigation and Development of Structures and Materials (CIDEM) has been involved in disaster-response projects in the area since 1996. The thrust has been the manufacture of ecomaterials such as micro concrete roofing (MCR) tiles, pozzolanic cement CP-40 and hollow concrete blocks, which provide the means to build affordable and hurricane safe houses. These materials are produced on the basis of local raw materials and labour in small workshops based directly in the communities.

The widespread use of ecomaterials on the northern coast of Villa Clara province has been a key aspect in decreasing the vulnerability of the houses against hurricanes. The fact that these materials have withstood the impact of various hurricanes without significant damage has drawn the attention of local governments, communities and donors. The presentation of case studies in this paper will illustrate this experience.

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss how individuals acquire knowledge through group experiences and how technologies used by virtual teams will affect this process. The effect of groups on individual member learning is a fundamental, but relatively unexplored, aspect of group effectiveness. We propose that group members can acquire knowledge in two ways: via other group members and through products that groups generate. With respect to acquisition via group members, we emphasize how collaborative processes provide opportunities for learning. With respect to knowledge transfer via group products, we pay particular attention to the mechanisms by which group members store knowledge. We address how information and communication technologies can influence these mechanisms for knowledge acquisition when working in virtual teams. In general, our review suggests that there are numerous challenges to knowledge acquisition in distributed groups. We conclude by discussing methods for enhancing opportunities for learning in virtual teams.

Findings

The study produced five thematic summaries – managers could prevent accidental knowledge depreciation through targeted interventions. Managers can prevent accidental knowledge loss with “purposeful interventions,” such as developing employee networks and implementing technological solutions. Managers can preserve organizational memory through control, management and maintenance of its usage and structure. Managers could help the process of intentional forgetting by developing a supportive environment. Managers could have a damaging effect on organizations if they prevented organizational change. The conclusions could be of great practical use for managers. They provide useful guidelines and strategies on how to reduce the disruptive effects of accidental forgetting and also how to plan intentional forgetting, a process known as “managed unlearning”.

Abstract

Knowledge management (KM) research lacks a common conceptual core; it is cross‐disciplinary, addresses a wide variety of phenomena, and has difficulty distinguishing itself from many related areas of research. The result is a fragmented field that is itself artificially split from the related literature on organizational learning. KM may be progressing through a predictable life‐cycle that could end in collapse of the KM concept unless researchers can develop more integrative core theories of learning‐ and knowledge‐related phenomena in organizations. The diverse body of organizational learning and knowledge management research provides an impressive foundation for the synthesis of such broader theories of learning and knowledge that are creative, new, and integrative.

The Geography of Tourism in Spain is now at a par in terms of its scientific production with other European countries. Since the middle of the '80s the quality and volume of contributions is analogous to the rest of the European Union, although as a part of University Geography in Spain it has not achieved the level of dedication reached by other subjects considering the importance of tourist activities to the economy, the society and the territory of Spain. It could be said that the Geography of Tourism in Spain is in the international vanguard in dealing with Mediterranean coastal tourism, with the relationships between the residential real estate and tourism sectors and with aspects related to tourism and leisure in rural and protected areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this academic paper is to analyze Argentina’s inflationary situation through an understanding of its monetary policy over the years, and to identify its effect on the country’s poverty, explaining the relationship between fiat currencies and stable currencies.

Design/methodology/approach

By analyzing the case of Argentina through descriptive methodology, the authors provide information on the use of stable currencies in Argentina and the reasons behind their use.

Findings

Through descriptive research, the authors were able to find out the situation regarding the use of stable currencies in Argentina. We identified how the country’s monetary policy has affected inflation and thus purchasing power parity.

Research limitations/implications

Given that cryptocurrency information is based on privacy, there are certain arguments that must be referred through qualitative aspects.

Practical implications

The importance of stablecoins in high inflation countries.

Social implications

The understanding on how cryptocurrencies are able to maintain purchasing power and help avoid inflation related poverty.

Originality/value

Discussion of cryptocurrency items, specifically stablecoins, has been limited due to their recent emergence and the existing discussion about their legality. The study presents an argument on the use of stablecoins by presenting a case that has not yet been studied.
