This paper's aim is to examine the citation impact of Iranian funded research publications and compare it with research which received no funding.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper's aim is to examine the citation impact of Iranian funded research publications and compare it with research which received no funding.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a bibliometric method, the study investigated 80,300 Iranian publications published from 2000 to 2009 in SCI‐EXPANDED to discover the percentage of funded publications and to determine the citation impact of these publications in comparison with unfunded ones.
Findings
The results of the study showed that around 12.5 per cent of Iranian publications were funded and the number of funded publications has increased dramatically over the last four years. The citation impact of funded publications was higher in almost all of the subject fields. The highest number of funded publications belonged to the universities subordinate to The Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.
Originality/value
The impact and quality of research is influenced by different factors, for instance receiving funding and research facilities. As this issue has not been previously examined in Iran, the present study determines whether funding can influence the impact of Iranian research.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Iranian newspapers' web sites based on the criteria obtained from Alexa Search Engine using correspondence analysis.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Iranian newspapers' web sites based on the criteria obtained from Alexa Search Engine using correspondence analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 55 newspaper web sites are selected from Iranian Magazines Information Bank (Magiran.com), the number of which, after investigating the web sites one by one, due to their print prevention, cessation or no coverage by Alexa, is decreased to 24 web sites.
Findings
Based on data obtained from Alexa, Iran newspaper has the highest traffic rank and the largest number of links among others. Bashirmazandaran newspaper has the largest number of foreign users whilst Karvakargar newspaper has no foreign users. The results of the study also show that most newspaper web sites' visitors come from the USA. Correspondence analysis classifies 24 web sites into three groupings gathered based on some common attributes.
Originality/value
The results of this research will be useful not only for administrators of Iranian newspapers' web sites but anyone with a need to increase usage of a web site and an interest in analyzing the use of web site which naturally includes librarians and those in charge of library web sites.

Abstract
Purpose
This purpose of this paper is to report on an analysis of linkages and impact of top universities of Islamic Countries on the web.
Design/methodology/approach
The AltaVista search engine was used to calculate universities' number of links and web impact factors.
Findings
The results revealed that half of the universities have not scored well in the indexes used by the webometrics ranking model. Among all universities, King Saud University of Saudi Arabia scored well in most indexes.
Originality/value
The paper presents a look at the functions and performance of top universities' web sites of Islamic countries.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to investigate the rate of Iranian researchers collaboration with their colleagues in other countries in science citation index (SCI). In addition, it seeks to investigate the visibility of publications by Iranian researchers, and particularly the visibility of papers resulting from international collaboration.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper employs the survey research method to answer research questions. Any publication recorded in the SCI database from 1998 to 2007 with at least one Iranian author was recognized and transferred to a database in Excel. The total records were 33,813. This number mostly includes articles, letters, notes, and reviews.
Findings
The results showed that Iranian researchers have had scientific collaboration with 115 countries, and that their numbers have increased between 1998 and 2007. The results also showed that the number of domestic articles per year was 2‐3.5 times more than international ones. Investigating international collaboration in different subject areas revealed that geosciences had the biggest number of publications co‐authored internationally. Iran's main partners were the USA, Canada, and UK, respectively. European researchers were the main counterparts of Iranian researchers. In addition, Iranian researchers had mostly co‐published with their colleagues in advanced countries. Among Iranian universities and research institutions, the University of Tehran had the highest collaboration at the international level. The results revealed that the average number of citations received by international co‐authored publications was more than those received by domestic co‐authored publications.
Originality/value
The paper shows the situation of international collaboration among Iranian researchers and the impact of publications resulting from international collaboration.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the web site performances of 18 Iranian Research Institutions based on the following factors: web impact factor (WIF), connectivity, visibility and traffic rank.
Design/methodology/approach
In this research, AltaVista search engine was used to calculate the number of total links and WIF; and data for traffic rank, number of pages viewed and percentage of foreign and Iranian visitors were extracted from the Alexa data bank. Also correspondence analysis is employed to analyze the data using John's Macintosh Project software.
Findings
The results revealed that SANJESH Organization and Iranian Scientific Information and Documentation Center web sites have performed fairly well in most factors. These two web sites have the best ranking in traffic and attracted a large number of total links compared with the other web sites. The results of the correspondence analysis of these 18 web sites can be divided into three groups consisting of one, five and 12 web sites, respectively.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors' knowledge, the evaluation and ranking of Iranian research institutions' web sites were not discussed in any other studies. With web technologies playing such an important role in the areas of science and research today, the functions and performances of research and academic institutions' web sites on the world wide web should be assessed to identify their weaknesses.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of Malaysian Public Universities on the web using correspondence analysis.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of Malaysian Public Universities on the web using correspondence analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
Webometrics methods and correspondence analysis were used toanalyze the attributes of websites. In total, 20 Public University Websites were surveyed which were accessible on Malaysia Government Website.
Findings
The results show that Malaysian Public Universities have functioned pretty well on the web. As a whole, University of Malaya has performed properly in almost all criteria but University Pertahanan National Malaysia has had a weak function based on all evaluation criteria among other universities. Correspondence analysis classified the surveyed universities' websites into three groupings which were related based on some attributes.
Originality/value
The paper evaluates performance of Malaysian Public Universities' websites based on criteria obtained from Alexa databank.
