Abstract

Purpose

Accurate evaluation of the consequences of new technologies in various industries is of great significance. So, it will be essential to examine the impact of this technology on the banking industry, representing how to create, deliver and gain value in this industry. This study aims to investigate whether blockchain can affect the business intelligence efficiency of banks. This study also aims to examine the impact of security, fraud reduction and privacy of blockchain, equal and anonymous access to the blockchain, decentralization and sustainability of blockchain, accountability and transparency of blockchain, quality, speed and efficiency of blockchain on business intelligence efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

Technological changes are creating new challenges and opportunities for various industries. The inability of organizations to adapt to these changes may even lead to their deletion from the market. Blockchain is one of the most critical technologies in recent years. One of the sectors that will undergo significant changes in blockchain technology is the banking industry. According to the reviewed literature in this study, a comprehensive model has been proposed to examine the impact of security, fraud reduction and privacy of blockchain, equal and anonymous access to the blockchain, the decentralization and sustainability of blockchain, accountability and transparency of blockchain and quality, speed and efficiency of blockchain on business intelligence efficiency. A survey method was used to collect data from banks of the Nanjing city. The partial least square technique was used for data analysis.

Findings

The results showed that the fit of the proposed model was very good. Also, all assumptions except one were confirmed. It means that security, fraud reduction and privacy of blockchain factor have a remarkable and positive impact on all aspects of business intelligence efficiency, namely information technology, employees, competitors and customers. Also, equal and anonymous access to the blockchain factor has a positive and significant effect on all aspects of business intelligence efficiency. The decentralization and sustainability of blockchain factors have an impact on business intelligence efficiency. Also, blockchain's accountability and transparency as a fourth factor have a positive and significant impact on all aspects of business intelligence efficiency. Finally, the last factor (quality, speed and efficiency of blockchain) has a positive and significant effect on information technology, employees and customers' dimensions. But, it does not affect the competitors' dimension, and this hypothesis has not been confirmed.

Practical implications

This paper offers valuable insight for business intelligence practitioners into how blockchain technology has the potential to disrupt existing business intelligence provisions.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first studies to examine the impact of blockchain on IT dimension, organizational employees' dimension, customer dimension and competitors' dimension. It lays a firm foundation for future research.

Asks the question, what is the biggest challenge in management for multinationals in China? Identifies the answer as the “iron rice bowl” mindset of local employees. Suggests work has been done to understand the unique danwei system from which this mindset was formed but little attention has been given to the way the danwei system shaped people’s behaviour pattern in the workplace. Describes life at the danwei, the most important aspect of the socialization process most Chinese employees had gone through before they joined multinational companies in China and explains why their behaviour pattern formed in that process conflicts with that of the expatriates and how it affects their job performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to use data from China between 1929 and 1933 and provides new empirical evidence to the debate over the impact of land ownership and land‐renting systems on agricultural productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors estimate the OLS regression to determine the relationship between land ownership (and land‐renting systems) and farmers' productivity.

Findings

The findings suggest that land ownership was not a major factor in determining farmers' productivity; instead, agricultural infrastructures and institutions had the greatest influence on agricultural productivity. Furthermore, different renting systems generated different impacts on farmers' behavior: sharecropping reduced farmers' productivity while fixed rental contracts had no significant impact on farmers' productivity.

Practical implications

This paper has two important policy implications for developing countries. First, agricultural policy that aims to raise agricultural productivity should focus more on improving agricultural infrastructures and institutions than on blindly supporting land privatization. Second, policymakers should promote fixed rental contracts over share contracts because fixed rental contracts were shown to have a smaller adverse impact on farmers' incentives.

Originality/value

This paper uses data from China and provides new evidence on the relative importance of land ownership and agricultural infrastructures/institutions in agricultural production. China is a country with a long agricultural history and a long‐standing well‐developed tenancy system. The case of China may therefore provide answers to policymakers in other developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the different types of domestic waste disposal in rural China and the major factors that affect rural household waste disposal behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Stratified and randomly sampled household data are used to describe the disposal of domestic waste in rural China, including domestic garbage and organic waste (human excreta, livestock waste, and kitchen waste); econometric models are estimated to quantify the major determinants of household domestic garbage and human excreta disposal.

Findings

While about 30 percent of the domestic garbage in 2008 was discharged to appropriately designated places, more than 40 percent of the garbage was discharged casually. Organic waste at the time of data gathering was still largely used in agricultural production, although a falling trend has been evidenced in recent years. Based on econometric analysis, it becomes clear that income growth, rising population density, and transportation improvements have significantly improved domestic garbage disposal, but negatively affected the recycling of human excreta. The provision of an adequate garbage collection service has the most positive effects on garbage management.

Originality/value

The analyses are based on primary survey data. The results will have significant policy implications on the management of rural domestic waste to maintain better rural environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore cross-border and sedentary workers' job satisfaction, analyzing the role played by employability dimensions (occupational expertise, anticipation/optimization and personal flexibility), a job resource (autonomy) and job demands (job insecurity and toxic leadership), using the job demands–resources (JD-R) model as a theoretical framework. Moreover, this study tried to detect possible discrepancies between the two subsamples.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved a sample of 250 employees, 40% of whom were frontier workers. Data were collected with a self-report questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS 25. A hierarchical regression analysis and t-test for independent samples were performed.

Findings

The findings evidenced differences between the two subsamples concerning the job satisfaction predictors. Specifically, for cross-border workers, optimization/anticipation appeared significantly positively related to job satisfaction. For sedentary workers, toxic leadership and job insecurity were significantly negatively related to job satisfaction. Autonomy was positively related to the outcome for both samples. Furthermore, cross-border workers reported a higher level of optimization/anticipation, personal flexibility and job satisfaction than sedentary workers.

Originality/value

This paper contributed to fill a gap currently present in the literature on the cross-border population, with a specific focus on job satisfaction. This study confirmed the existence of peculiar working dynamics for cross-border workers.

Abstract

Purpose

The numerical simulation of dispersed-phase evolution in injection molding process of polymer blends is of great significance in both adjusting material microstructure and improving performances of the final products. This paper aims to present a numerical strategy for the simulation of dispersed-phase evolution for immiscible polymer blends in injection molding.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the dispersed-phase modeling is discussed in detail. Then the Maffettone–Minale model, affine deformation model, breakup model and coalescence statistical model are chosen for the dispersed-phase evolution. A general coupled model of microscopic morphological evolution and macroscopic flow field is constructed. Besides, a stable finite element simulation strategy based on pressure-stabilizing/Petrov–Galerkin/streamline-upwind/Petrov–Galerkin method is adopted for both scales.

Findings

Finally, the simulation results are compared and evaluated with the experimental data, suggesting the reliability of the presented numerical strategy.

Originality/value

The coupled modeling of dispersed-phase and complex flow field during injection molding and the tracing and simulation of droplet evolution during the whole process can be achieved.
