– This paper aims to validate and analyse the NASA35 axial compressor performance based on a numerical approach.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to validate and analyse the NASA35 axial compressor performance based on a numerical approach.
Design/methodology/approach
Knowledge about flow property change during compressor operation at high and relatively low speed is still limited. This work provides a numerical approach to address these problems. Validation of numerical methods is proposed to generate confidence the numerical approach adopted, and after that, analysis of compressor performance at different operation conditions is carried out.
Findings
The numerical methods proposed are proved capable in predicting compressor performance. Changes of flow property during compressor operation are discussed and explained.
Research limitations/implications
The current numerical work is carried out based on the first stage of the NASA35 axial compressor, where the interactive effects from adjacent stage are not counted in. Furthermore, the steady-state simulation enforces an averaging of flow at rotor-stator interface, where the transient rotor-stator interaction is removed.
Practical implications
This work validates the numerical methods used in the prediction of NASA35 axial compressor performance, and a similar numerical approach can be used for other turbomachinery simulation cases.
Originality/value
This work reinforces the understanding of axial compressor operation and provides reliable results for further investigation of a similar type of compressor. In addition, details of flow field within the NASA35 compressor during operation are given and explained which experiments still have difficult to achieve.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to understand the current research status and future development trends in the field of numerical simulation on rock mass grouting.
Design/methodology/approach
This article first searched the literature database (EI, Web of Science, CNKI, etc.) for keywords related to the numerical simulation of rock mass grouting to obtain the initial literature database. Then, from the initial database, several documents with strong relevance to the numerical simulation theme of rock mass grouting and high citation rate were selected; some documents from the references were selected as supplements, forming the sample database of this review study (a total of 90 articles). Finally, through sorting out the relationship among the literature, this literature review was carried out.
Findings
The numerical simulation of rock mass grouting is mainly based on the porous media model and the fractured media model. It has experienced the development process from Newtonian fluid to non-Newtonian fluid, from time-invariant viscosity to time-varying viscosity, and from generalized theoretical model to engineering application model. Based on this, this article summarizes four scientific problems that need to be solved in the future in this research field: the law of grout distribution at the cross fissures, the grout diffusion mechanism under multi-field coupling, more accurate grouting theoretical model and simulation technology with strong engineering applicability.
Originality/value
This research systematically analyzes the current research status and shortcomings of numerical simulation on rock mass grouting, summarizes four key issues in the future development of this research field and provides new ideas for the future research on numerical simulation on rock mass grouting.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to design a glass handling robot and conduct a finite element analysis and structural optimization to solve the automation handling problem of large-scale glass production line and aiming at the phenomenon that the vibration of robot manipulator may result in breakage of glass products, especially the fragile chemical or medical glassware. Making modal analysis for the robot is to determine its natural frequencies and vibration modes and lay a foundation for the transient analysis to study the vibration shock response of the robot during its start-up and emergency stop operation.
Design/methodology/approach
First, a 3D model of the robot is established according to the requirements of the production field and a finite element model is built on the basis of the 3D model. Then the modal and transient analyses of the robot are carried out according to the fact that the maximum vibration impact of the robot usually appears at the start and emergency stop.
Findings
The structure of the robot is improved according to the results of finite element analysis. The dynamic analysis results show that the improved robot’s ability to resist deformation under the impact of vibration shock is enhanced, and the robot can operate smoothly and meet the requirements of design in industrial environments.
Originality/value
The research results avoided the damage caused by the vibration and improved the service life of the robot, providing a foundation for the structural design and mass production of the glass handling robot.

Abstract
Purpose
Fault-related monitoring variables selection is a process of obtaining a subset of variables from the original set, which is of great significance for reducing information redundancy and improving the performance of the fault diagnosis models. This paper aims to propose a novel variables selection approach based on complex networks.
Design/methodology/approach
Firstly, a dual-layer correlation networks (DlCN) which consists of mechanism-oriented correlation sub-network (MoCSN) and data-oriented correlation sub-network (DoCSN) is constructed. Secondly, an algorithm for identifying critical fault-related monitoring variables based on dual correlations is introduced. In the algorithm, the topological attributes of the MoCSN and correlation threshold of the DoCSN are used successively.
Findings
In the experiments of vertical elevator fault diagnosis, the critical fault-related monitoring variables selected by the DlCN-based approach is more effective than the traditional approaches. It indicates that fusion mechanism-oriented correlation can enhance the comprehensiveness of variable correlation analysis. Moreover, the approach has been proved to be adaptable to different fault diagnosis models.
Originality/value
In the DlCN-based variables selection approach, the mechanism-oriented correlation and data-oriented correlation are comprehensively considered. It improves the precision of variables selection. Meanwhile, it is an unsupervised and model-agnostic approach which addresses the shortcomings of some conventional approaches that require data labels and have insufficient adaptability for fault diagnosis models.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study police powers and accountability from a comparative perspective in both China and Hong Kong.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper compares and contrasts police powers and accountability.
Findings
The implications are many, including different political systems in which China is more authoritarian or paternalistic whereas Hong Kong is more pluralistic; checks and balances mechanisms in Hong Kong are far greater than in China; and the concept of accountability to the public is different in that Hong Kong police are accountable to members of the public but the mainland Chinese police force has a limited and top-down concept of accountability.
Originality/value
An original comparative approach to policing in Hong Kong and China.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to look at the relationship of external embeddedness and institutional distance (governance aspects) with the foreign subsidiary research and development (R&D) capacity. Furthermore, it examines whether these relationships are mediated by subsidiary product and process innovation, and whether institutional distance plays a moderating role in the relationship between subsidiary innovation and R&D capacity.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors draw on survey data from 130 foreign subsidiaries operating in Brazil and test their model using variance-based structural equation modeling.
Findings
Results suggest that subsidiary (product and process) innovation fully mediates the relationships between: subsidiary external embeddedness and R&D capacity; and institutional distance and subsidiary R&D capacity, such that the relationship is positive in case of the former and negative in case of the latter. The relationship between subsidiary product and process innovation and R&D capacity is positive and stronger at lower levels of institutional distance.
Originality/value
The research ignores the underlying mechanisms of the external embeddedness and institutional distance relationship with subsidiary R&D capacity. Furthermore, institutional distance based on formal governance aspects and their impacts on subsidiary innovation and R&D capacity are rarely investigated. This paper contributes with regard to these aspects.

This article aims to develop an accurate and efficient meshfree Galerkin method based on the strain smoothing technique for linear elastic continuous and fracture problems.
Abstract
Purpose
This article aims to develop an accurate and efficient meshfree Galerkin method based on the strain smoothing technique for linear elastic continuous and fracture problems.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposed a generalized linear smoothed meshfree method (LSMM), in which the compatible strain is reconstructed by the linear smoothed strains. Based on the idea of the weighted residual method and employing three linearly independent weight functions, the linear smoothed strains can be created easily in a smoothing domain. Using various types of basic functions, LSMM can solve the linear elastic continuous and fracture problems in a unified way.
Findings
On the one hand, the LSMM inherits the properties of high efficiency and stability from the stabilized conforming nodal integration (SCNI). On the other hand, the LSMM is more accurate than the SCNI, because it can produce continuous strains instead of the piece-wise strains obtained by SCNI. Those excellent performances ensure that the LSMM has the capability to precisely track the crack propagation problems. Several numerical examples are investigated to verify the accurate, convergence rate and robustness of the present LSMM.
Originality/value
This study provides an accurate and efficient meshfree method for simulating crack growth.

This article examines the impact of different policy instruments on livestock farmers' willingness to recycle manure. The results shed light on the optimal policy combination.
Abstract
Purpose
This article examines the impact of different policy instruments on livestock farmers' willingness to recycle manure. The results shed light on the optimal policy combination.
Design/methodology/approach
A game theoretical framework is constructed to illustrate farmers' optimal strategies under different policies. Theoretical results are empirically tested by survey data from beef cattle farmers in Central China.
Findings
Empirical results show that penalties work better than subsidies if each type of policy is implemented separately. The authors also find a positive interaction between subsidy and penalty policies, suggesting that a combination of subsidy and penalty policies produces the best outcome in incentivizing livestock farmers to recycle manure. Furthermore, planting and breeding simultaneously have the strongest effect on increasing livestock farmers' willingness to recycle manure, suggesting that the combination of planting and breeding can be an optimal strategy for manure management.
Originality/value
This study is based on firsthand survey data and provides new evidence on the effectiveness of alternative environmental policies on manure recycling.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on the business-to-business context in the service industry, this study aims to address two balancing problems that a supplier firm may face in an integrated framework: the trade-off between the two-dimensional market orientations (MO) (i.e. proactive and responsive MO) and the trade-off between two categories of governance mechanisms (i.e. contractual governance [CG] and relational governance [RG]). In doing so, the contingent effects of the governance mechanisms on the relationships between two-dimensional MO and service innovation capability (SIC) are empirically examined and tested.
Design/methodology/approach
A dyadic questionnaire survey of 168 services outsourcing firms’ project managers and strategy managers was used to collect data, which was then used to test the hypotheses by conducting hierarchical regression analysis.
Findings
It was observed that CG weakens the positive relationship between proactive MO (PMO) and SIC, while the positive impact of responsive MO (RMO) on SIC is strengthened. By contrast, RG plays an inverted U-shaped moderating role in the positive relationship between PMO and SIC. Nevertheless, the hypothesis that RG has an inverted U-shaped moderating effect on the effectiveness of RMO is not supported.
Originality/value
Drawing on transaction cost economics and relational exchange theory, this study contributes to the existing literature on MO by revealing how CG and RG differentially shape the value of PMO and RMO.
