Abstract
Purpose
The use of pay for performance (P4P) as an instrument to incentivise quality improvements in health care is at a crossroads in high-income countries but has remained a commonly used tool in low- and middle-income countries. The authors aimed to take stock of the evidence on effectiveness and design from across income settings to reveal insights for the future design of performance payment across income contexts.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors identified Cochrane literature reviews of the use of P4P in health care in any income setting, tracked the development in the quantity and quality of evidence over time, and compared the incentive design features used across high-income countries compared to low- and middle-income countries.
Findings
The quantity and quality of the evidence base have grown over time but can still be improved. Scheme design varies across income settings, and although some design choices may reflect differences in context, the authors find that incentive designers in both income settings can learn from practices used in the other setting.
Originality/value
The research and literature on P4P in high-, low- and middle-income countries largely operate in silos. By taking stock of the evidence on P4P from across income settings, the authors are able to draw out key insights between these settings, which remain underexplored in the literature.

Abstract
Purpose
This research aims to examine and compare differences in waṣiyyah wājibah (obligatory bequest) (WW) practices in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Design/methodology/approach
This is an exploratory qualitative research, employing a thematic analysis approach. Six Muslim Wills (State) Enactments [Enakmen Wasiat Orang Islam (Negeri)] in Malaysia, Islamic Law Compilation (Kompilasi Hukum Islam) in Indonesia, two fatwas (ruling in religious matters) and one court case from each country are analysed. Data is collected from official government websites and other reliable search engines.
Findings
First, the findings show that the WW practice in both countries is similar regarding the quantum of the beneficiaries' entitlement. However, the practice varies between both countries in terms of the types of beneficiaries and how the bequest is distributed. Second, this study shows the potential of WW as an estate planning instrument to complement the existing instruments in each country, especially when addressing family members who are not entitled to succeed by farāʾiḍ (Islamic inheritance law).
Practical implications
The provision of relevant laws and regulations regarding WW needs to be formulated to guarantee the well-being of dependants. The differences in practice between the two countries can be a guideline to expand the WW scope and context to other Muslim countries.
Originality/value
This study is the first attempt to compare WW between two Muslim-majority countries focusing on relevant laws, court cases and regulations.

Abstract
Purpose
In this article, we identify various foodservice-related attributes that are important for undergraduate students residing in hostels and avail service from specific foodservice providers. We also investigate the performance of attributes to determine areas where the foodservice providers should maintain a high performance or where improvement is required.
Design/methodology/approach
We apply the Kano methodology to design the questionnaire for 24 different attributes. For each attribute, we construct three questions; namely, functional type, dysfunctional type, and performance of the hostel foodservice. We collect a total of 317 responses. We use multiple methods to determine the dominant category. Finally, combining the values of these methods, we study relative positions of the attributes in the importance–performance grid.
Findings
Based on the Kano categorization, quality-related attributes are most important, followed by hygiene, comfort, availability, variety, and time, in the descending order. The gender of the respondent plays an important role in categorization of some attributes. Using the importance–performance analysis, we identify the attributes where the foodservice provider should maintain a high performance or where improvement is required. Improvements in some attributes are difficult due to foodservice provider's self-assessment of high performance or high difficulty for improvement.
Originality/value
In this study, we examine the importance of various foodservice attributes among undergraduate residential students. We combine multiple methods of Kano categorization to compute importance values of the attributes. We also investigate the reasons behind the gap between student's and foodservice manager's perception of the performance of these attributes.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to analyse the relationship between human capital and obtainment of halal certification.
Design/methodology/approach
The human capital theory is deployed as the basis to analyse the possible factors that determine the obtainment of halal certification by small firms. Four independent variables that were delineated include business experience, motivation, training and education. The proposed hypotheses mark the relationship between the four variables and the obtainment of the halal certification. The sample size (n = 370) is a group of small firms randomly picked from the four regions in the North Sumatera Province, Indonesia.
Findings
By adopting the quantitative deductive-hypothetical method and the logistic regression analysis, the result has revealed that the aforementioned four variables have a significant relationship with the obtainment of halal certification.
Originality/value
This paper provides the empirical findings and valuable insight for future researchers. The importance of obtaining the halal certification lies in not only more than convincing customers with the goodness of ingredient or compliance with the religions’ obligations but also it can serve as a strategy that brings a competitive advantage to the firms to grow. While the elements of human capital would be the factors that influence in the decision-making of obtaining the halal certification.

Abstract
Purpose
This study assesses the quality of health-insurance services and their impact on customer satisfaction, examining the mediating role of utilitarian value and brand image in this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data were collected from 345 health-insurance companies' customers selected through convenience sampling and were analyzed using SmartPLS.
Findings
Service quality statistically significantly influences customer satisfaction with health insurance in Saudi Arabia, whereas brand image and utilitarian value partially mediate this relationship. The structural path between service quality and brand image was statistically significant and positive. The utilitarian dimension positively affects customer satisfaction and service quality.
Practical implications
This study is significant to the management, as it provides insight into the expectations of health-insurance users. The focus is to gain a competitive advantage by improving customer service and brand image.
Originality/value
This investigation contributes to the field by exploring the mediating role of utilitarian value and brand image in the relationship between health-insurance quality and customer satisfaction based on the information provided by insurance policyholders in Saudi Arabia.

Purpose
Examining the influence of ethnic food tourists' perception of hygiene on their attitudinal loyalty formation is the purpose of this study. Specifically, How to demonstrate touristsʼ perception of ethnic food hygiene is the key question, and moreover, the study also investigates whether and how the stages of attitudinal loyalty in this study, which are perceived authenticity, positive emotion, and perceived value, are illustrated in this mechanism and are affected by tourist perceptions of hygiene?
Design/methodology/approach
By engaging in the critical debate around the topic of hygiene perception, this study explores the influence of this factor on tourist's attitudinal loyalty, including the cognitive, affective and conative aspects, to ethnic food through the adoption of perceived authenticity, positive emotion and perceived value. A survey was conducted at the Xijiang Miao Village, a very popular ethnic tourism destination in China.
Findings
This study reveals that ethnic food tourists' perceptions of hygiene have five dimensions. One of these plays a direct predictor role in developing effective conative loyalty (perceived value). Tourists' perceptions of authenticity and positive emotion representing cognitive and affective loyalty are confirmed in their direct effect on conative loyalty as well. The five dimensions of perceptions of hygiene identified have varying degrees of influence on the three stages of attitudinal loyalty.
Originality/value
The unique contribution of this study lies in two points: (1) it has discovered the way that tourists' perceptions of the hygienic preparation of ethnic food in the ethnic destination is constructed, and (2) it investigated the relationship between tourists' perceptions of hygiene and the three stages of attitudinal loyalty.
