Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the adoption of practices and investigating of commonalities/intensities between the factors for measuring organizational effectiveness (OE) across healthcare supply chains in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Design/methodology/approach
System theory coupled with the Supplier-Input-Process-Output-Customer tool was applied to facilitate the linkage between different nodes of the healthcare chain. An exploratory approach was used to explore and measure the importance of various OE factors across various nodes of the healthcare supply chain. Data were collected using a two-stage questionnaire process addressed at personnel in the UAE’s healthcare sector.
Findings
The study identified that 62 OE factors in the health are supply chain. Of these, 15 are related to suppliers, 14 to the healthcare process, 12 to employees, 8 to patients and the community, 6 to government directives and 7 to branding. In total, 21 common factors were identified and clustered into groups based on commonalities and intensities.
Research limitations/implications
The study identifies the most important factors for healthcare organizations to achieve OE for different dimensions of operations or performance. These factors will provide valuable insights for decision makers in the sector; it will provide valuable insights to healthcare professionals and academia to investigate more on these factors.
Originality/value
While there is an increasing research interest in healthcare supply chains, this is the first study to investigate OE across the entire chain while also evaluating the importance of and commonalities in OE-enabling factors.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify factors affecting sustainable organizational performance, to build a framework for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) public health-care sector to facilitate sustainable organizational performance and to prioritize the factors for sustainable organizational performance.
Design/method/approach
The method used in this research is the quantitative method called the analytical hierarchal process (AHP) to help the decision makers in the public health-care sector to prioritize the factors that are affecting sustainable organizational performance. The method will also help to deal with the complexity of the sustainable organizational performance issue by interviewing nine experts in the field.
Findings
The findings of this research showed 21 sub-factors for sustainable organizational performance in the public health-care sector in UAE. It emphasizes that patient safety and quality of care are the most important factors for sustainable organizational performance.
Research limitations/implications
This study can be repeated by targeting other private hospitals in UAE. The novelty of this research means that it is the first study done in sustainable organizational performance in the health-care sector in UAE.
Practical implications
Health-care management can benefit from this research in many ways: Medical errors have a high impact on the hospital’s reputation and these determine the customer demand. Thus, the hospital’s management should give more attention to minimize the medical errors in order to have a sustainable organizational performance. This can be accomplished through clear protocols and procedures that may affect patients’ lives, the hospital’s reputation and organizational performance. Nevertheless, the policymakers should focus on society engagement; focus on social sustainability should be an integral part of their operational and business strategy. According to Abu Dhabi Health Authority (HAAD), the UAE has a highest rate of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease itself accounted for 36.7% of all 2013 deaths. The health-care sector should focus more on educating the community by conducting workshops, seminars and awareness campaigns across the UAE. In addition, decision makers in the health-care sector should spend more on continued improvement by focusing on lean activities that focus on waste minimization and linking the service quality to the hospital outcomes and patient satisfaction. The fourth highest overall priority weight for both transformational leadership and for the waiting time sub-criteria should also be considered by top management to focus more on hiring, retaining, and developing their transformational leaders, and to keep an eye on the waiting time and improving customer service. This will result in the sustainable organizational performance. Interestingly, all of the HR processes showed the lowest overall weights at 1%, which is a bit strange. HR should play more of a role in sustainable organizational performance, equal to the other sub-factors.
Originality/value
Originality of this research stems from a reliable and valid framework that can be subsequently used for measuring the organizational performance of health care organizations.

Purpose
The issue of energy efficiency is becoming increasingly prevalent globally due to factors such as the expansion of the population, economic growth and excessive consumption that is not sustainable in the long run. Additionally, healthcare facilities and hospitals are facing challenges as their operational costs continue to rise. The research aim is to develop strategic frameworks for managing green hospitals, towards energy efficiency and corporate governance in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Design/methodology/approach
This research employs a qualitative case study approach, with a sample of ten hospitals examined through interviews with senior management, executives and healthcare facilities managers. Relevant data was also collected from literature and analysed through critical appraisal and content analysis. The research methodology is based on the use of grounded theory research methodologies to build theories from case studies.
Findings
The research developed three integrated conceptual strategic frameworks for managing hospitals and healthcare facilities towards energy efficiency, green hospital initiatives and corporate governance. The research also outlined the concepts of green hospitals and energy efficiency management systems and best practices based on the conclusions drawn from the investigated case studies.
Research limitations/implications
The study is limited to the initiatives and experiences of the healthcare facilities studied in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Originality/value
The research findings, conclusions, recommendations and proposed frameworks and concepts contribute significantly to the existing body of knowledge. This research also provides recommendations for hospital managers and policymakers on how to effectively implement and manage energy efficiency initiatives in healthcare facilities.

Purpose
Energy-saving is a growing challenge worldwide because of population growth, economic activity and high consumption rates that are unsustainable in the long term. Health-care facilities and hospitals face the challenge of increases in operational costs. This paper aims to appraise challenges to adopting energy-saving policies and proposes a roadmap for sustainability and energy efficiency management in hospitals and health-care facilities.
Design/methodology/approach
Eight hospitals were examined as case studies through qualitative interviews with hospital senior management, executives and health-care facilities managers in addition to collecting relevant data from the literature; there is critical appraisal and content analysis of this data.
Findings
This study established factors influencing implementation and challenges to energy-saving strategies. This study proposed guidelines for efficient energy management in hospitals and health-care facilities. This study concluded that the best performance is secured by integrating the proposed guidelines with the adoption of ISO 50001 energy management systems to achieve the United Nations’ sustainable development goal – SDG 7 “affordable and clean energy”.
Research limitations/implications
This study is limited to the initiatives/experiences of the hospitals studied in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Originality/value
This study’s findings, conclusions, recommendations and proposed guidelines enrich the body of knowledge. This will allow industry key stakeholders, hospitals and health-care facilities managers to overcome challenges of implementing energy management. In addition, adopting the proposed guidelines will improve energy efficiency and help hospitals in green initiatives as they seek to demonstrate their support for United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

Purpose
Due to the large and fast growing sentiment analysis (SA) area recently, many new concepts and different nomenclatures have emerged without the desired organization. This confusion in the research field makes the understandability of the concepts hard and also hampers the comparison of different approaches. Thus, this paper aims to propose a hierarchical taxonomy to help the consolidation of SA area. The taxonomy aims at covering the addressed problems and methods in the SA field.
Design/methodology/approach
This taxonomy is a filtered union of various classifications found in the literature with a proposal of nomenclatures standardization. As instance, a case study is presented with 20 SA-related articles classified according to the proposed taxonomy.
Findings
This taxonomy is very expressive because it covers many concepts and is also effective once it allows the distinction and categorization of the previous SA works.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the literature does not present such an expressive and effective classification as proposed in this paper. This new taxonomy allows for the navigation between the existing concepts in the SA field as well as, facilitates the search, comparison and indexing of papers already published.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the influence of health-care service quality on customers’ perceived value, satisfaction, effectiveness and behavioural intention concerning district health centres (DHCs) in Hong Kong. This research also intends to assess customers’ perception of the subsidy scheme and its influence on the relationships amongst the aforementioned constructs.
Design/methodology/approach
The convenience and snowball sampling approaches were adopted, and the self-administered questionnaire was sent to 309 customers of DHCs.
Findings
Service quality attributes in terms of staffing and procedures positively increased customers’ perceived value and staffing, procedures and operations. Physical facilities positively promoted customers’ satisfaction, consequently improving DHCs’ effectiveness and behavioural intention. However, core treatments and services of DHCs did not impact customers’ perceived value and satisfaction. Furthermore, customers receiving subsidies exhibited a more positive perception than those without subsidies.
Practical implications
Health-care organisations are advised to strategically allocate resources (staffing, facilities and procedures and operations management) to optimise overall performance outcomes. DHC operators could reinforce the core services of DHCs and health-care voucher subsidies to local citizens so as to enhance the effectiveness of DHCs and behavioural intention of customers.
Originality/value
This study integrates the input–process–output approach in measuring the effectiveness of and customers’ behavioural intention towards newly established DHCs.

Abstract
Purpose
Given the importance of employee psychological well-being to job performance, this study aims to investigate the mediating role of affective commitment between psychological well-being and job performance while considering the moderating role of job insecurity on psychological well-being and affective commitment relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were gathered from employees working in cellular companies of Pakistan using paper-and-pencil surveys. A total of 280 responses were received. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling technique and Hayes’s Model 1.
Findings
Findings suggest that affective commitment mediates the association between psychological well-being (hedonic and eudaimonic) and employee job performance. In addition, perceived job insecurity buffers the association of psychological well-being (hedonic and eudaimonic) and affective commitment.
Practical implications
The study results suggest that fostering employee psychological well-being may be advantageous for the organization. However, if interventions aimed at ensuring job security are not made, it may result in adverse employee work-related attitudes and behaviors.
Originality/value
The study extends the current literature on employee well-being in two ways. First, by examining psychological well-being in terms of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being with employee work-related attitude and behavior. Second, by highlighting the prominent role played by perceived job insecurity in explaining some of these relationships.

Abstract
Purpose
Considering the potential economic losses this might bring about, researchers have begun to explore ways to mitigate procrastination. Drawing on the job demands-resources model and the spillover-crossover model, this study aims to investigate the association between harmonious passion and procrastination at the intra- and interpersonal levels.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used a two-wave multisource questionnaire survey to acquire 256 cases nested in 128 coworker dyads from two hotels in Shanghai. Multilevel analysis and the actor–partner interdependence model were adopted to examine the hypotheses.
Findings
The results indicate that employees’ harmonious passion is indirectly negatively associated with procrastination (i.e., cyberslacking and soldiering) through workplace well-being at the intrapersonal level; employees’ harmonious passion is indirectly negatively associated with their coworkers’ procrastination (i.e., cyberslacking and soldiering) through the coworkers’ workplace well-being; and the crossover influence of employees’ harmonious passion on coworkers’ workplace well-being is contingent upon interpersonal conflict at the dyadic level, such that the crossover influence is stronger in condition of low rather than high interpersonal conflict.
Practical implications
Hotels are suggested to provide training programs to employees for enhancing their capabilities to maintain harmonious passion and promote their communication skills to decrease the likelihood to experience interpersonal conflict.
Originality/value
This study offers a comprehensive insight into the association between harmonious passion and procrastination in hospitality employees, which extends the understanding of the outcomes of harmonious passion and the profit of harmonious passion at the interpersonal level.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study was to map and scope a body of literature on the interplay between public value management (PVM) and digital transformation (DT), clarify the concept of PVM in DT, and identify knowledge gaps by using a scoping review methodology.
Design/methodology/approach
A scoping review was conducted, drawing on the framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) and Levac et al. (2010). A total of 54 publications on the interplay between PVM and DT were selected for the final analysis from the Web of Science, Scopus, and Dimensions databases.
Findings
We found that PVM in DT is a relatively unexplored topic and that additional research is needed to focus on the role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, especially in the context of local and regional governments. We also found that researchers have a limited conceptual understanding of PVM and DT.
Originality/value
This article makes two main contributions. First, although PVM and DT have contributed to public value research, our findings show a need for more systematic knowledge of these complementary but distinct approaches. Second, this study provides a valuable addition to the developing body of research using the scoping review methodology in PAM literature.
