Abstract

Purpose

Grounded on the resource-based and dynamic capability views and the contingency theories, this study examines the direct and indirect effects of web technology training (WTT) and web-enabled transaction use (WTU) on business performance (BPE) through internal supply chain integration (ISCI) and supplier supply chain integration (SSCI).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on survey data collected from a sample of 175 respondents in the USA, the authors used structural equation modeling with AMOS 24.0 to test the measurement model for validity, reliability and the conceptual model for hypothesized structural relationships.

Findings

The results reveal that WTT significantly impacts WTU, which, in turn, has a significant direct relationship with BPE. Further, WTU indirectly affects BPE through SSCI. Additionally, ISCI has a significant direct effect on SSCI.

Practical implications

The findings support the relationship between WTT and BPE via WTU SCI. Managers are advised to develop ongoing capabilities in WTT to maximize the value of WTU to enhance the ISCI and SSCI operations, thus leading to improvements in BPE.

Originality/value

The research contributes to the supply chain literature by empirically demonstrating the usefulness of WTT in improving WTU use and BPE through effective ISCI and SSCI.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether geopolitical risk (GPR) impacts the cash holdings behavior of 210 Turkish firms between 2005 and 2019. The authors choose Turkey as a country of interest because Turkey has an important place in terms of geographical location and serves as a bridge between Europe and Asia. Considering the prominent role that can play in decision-making processes, the authors thought that analyzing the impact of GPR on the cash holdings determinants of Turkish firms would be important and interesting. A widely accepted view is that GPRs play an important role in the economic decisions of emerging countries, such as Turkey.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors examine models with fixed effects (FE), random effects (RE) and pooled ordinary least squares (POLS), respectively. First, the authors analyzed whether POLS, FE or RE would be the most appropriate model. According to the F-test and the Breusch–Pagan LM test, the FE and the RE models are more suitable than POLS. Then, according to the Hausman test results, the authors found that FE is this study's most appropriate model. After determining the validity of FE, the diagnostics tests of heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation and serial correlation tests are examined. Due to the presence of these problems, Driscoll and Kraay's (1998) test, which is the robust standard error estimator, is used.

Findings

The authors find a positive relationship between GPR and cash holdings after controlling firm-level control variables. Firms faced with uncertainty prefer to hoard cash as a precautionary measure. In keeping with real options theory, firms postpone the investments of firms under uncertain conditions. The use of alternative measurements for GPR and cash holdings ensures the validity of our results. The authors' research reveals that investors and politicians should pay more attention to the influence of GPR on the determinants of the cash holdings of firms.

Research limitations/implications

There are limitations for this study, but this study may provide opportunities for further studies. First, this study has only data from Turkey. This situation mitigates cross-country effects. In future studies, the number of firms, countries of focus and time span can be expanded. Second, this study does not consider the period of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that increased risk and uncertainty worldwide. Further studies may consider the impact of COVID-19 and geographical risks relating to cash holdings. Third, the authors try to choose more relied independent and control variables.

Practical implications

The authors' results provide some insights that are relevant to practitioners and policymakers. Managers need to consider GPR in managers' financial decisions based on managers' firm-specific characteristics. Turkish policymakers should target improving policies to alleviate the negative effects of GPRs. Regulators should postulate more encouraging policies to firms in an environment of GPR. Regulators can give firms more time to understand and analyze the GPRs and the impacts of GPRs to adjust regulators' day-to-day activities.

Originality/value

There are fewer studies in the literature that analyzed the relationship between GPR and cash holdings. This study aims to full this gap in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine the ethical implications surrounding generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Design/methodology/approach

Leveraging a novel methodological approach, the study curates a corpus of 364 documents from Scopus spanning 2022 to 2024. Using the term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) and structural topic modeling (STM), it quantitatively dissects the thematic essence of the ethical discourse in generative AI across diverse domains, including education, healthcare, businesses and scientific research.

Findings

The results reveal a diverse range of ethical concerns across various sectors impacted by generative AI. In academia, the primary focus is on issues of authenticity and intellectual property, highlighting the challenges of AI-generated content in maintaining academic integrity. In the healthcare sector, the emphasis shifts to the ethical implications of AI in medical decision-making and patient privacy, reflecting concerns about the reliability and security of AI-generated medical advice. The study also uncovers significant ethical discussions in educational and financial settings, demonstrating the broad impact of generative AI on societal and professional practices.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides a foundation for crafting targeted ethical guidelines and regulations for generative AI, informed by a systematic analysis using STM. It highlights the need for dynamic governance and continual monitoring of AI’s evolving ethical landscape, offering a model for future research and policymaking in diverse fields.

Originality/value

The study introduces a unique methodological combination of TF-IDF and STM to analyze a large academic corpus, offering new insights into the ethical implications of generative AI across multiple domains.

Abstract

Purpose

This study provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) applications on oral healthcare, focusing on clinical outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic approach was used to gather articles from databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar from 2010 to 2024. The selection criteria included articles published in English, focusing solely on clinical applications of AI in dentistry. Articles such as conference proceedings, editorial material and personal opinions were excluded. The articles were analyzed and visualized using Rayyan software, Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer.

Findings

Results indicate that 120 publications were authored by 58 scholars from 92 institutions across 29 countries, with a notable surge since 2018. This analysis showed the significant emphasis on the use of deep learning, demonstrating its high accuracy and performance in oral healthcare, often exceeding that of dentists. It also proved that even though AI is sometimes seen as an auxiliary tool, many studies revealed that AI has a performance near dental professionals’ levels. Findings concluded that the majority of studies indicate that AI is generating better clinical outcomes in oral healthcare.

Practical implications

This study provides dental professionals with insights on integrating AI for better diagnosis and treatment. Policymakers and healthcare institutions can use these findings to inform AI adoption and training strategies.

Originality/value

It presents novel and valuable findings that can benefit various stakeholders by shedding light on the present scenario and potential future paths of AI integration in oral healthcare, contributing to its overall advancement.

Abstract

In recent years, decreasing reserves and environmental problems related with fossil fuels have increased the demand for clean and renewable energy sources, as with all over the world and also in Turkey. Wind energy is the one of the most rapidly growing among the renewable energy sources in terms of technological and utilization. Turkey is one of the rich countries in Europe in respect to wind energy potential. Productive and effective use of this potential is very important for Turkey that is depended on foreign countries especially in respect to fossil energy sources. Wind speed values are the most important data in calculation of electrical energy from wind turbines. In this study, latest developments and energy-power equations related to wind turbines are investigated. Using of the data obtained from the wind measurement station installed in Sakarya-Esentepe region, annual electrical energy production of an example wind plant is predicted.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous literature reviews mainly focus on green supply chain, however, there is surprisingly little effort made in the systematic literature review to focus on a specific function of green supply chain, i.e. green procurement (GP). Regarding research methodology, most reviews are qualitative and inductive generalizations. Quantitative methods such as bibliometrics have started to be applied in recent years. This paper responds to this trend by counting the largest amount of literature with 238 articles in the last 24 years from 2000 to 2023 to visually analyze different theoretical perspectives and research topics into a comprehensive framework and identify future research directions and opportunities in the GP field.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on CiteSpace and in-depth content analysis, this paper attempts to visually analyze 238 valid papers to identify key literature and analyze the evolution of research hot spots and frontier development trends.

Findings

Combined with the visualization results and the content analysis of key references, we identify key literature and examine the evolution of research hotspots and frontier development trends. The bibliometric analysis mainly includes knowledge mapping to identify key themes, co-occurrence and clustering analysis of keywords, cooperation networks in researchers' countries. An overall GP research model is presented and our research suggests future avenues for GP research, such as low carbon, digitalization, servitization and ecosystem perspectives.

Originality/value

Firstly, in terms of time and volume of literature, we have counted the most comprehensive and up-to-date literature in the field of GP research, which is conducive to further expanding and enriching GP research. Secondly, this study clearly describes the theoretical evolution of GP research from bilateral and multilateral to ecosystem perspectives, and constructs a new and comprehensive research framework of “driver-practice-outcome”. Thirdly, based on the bibliometric analysis results, our research suggests future avenues for GP research, such as low-carbon, digitalization, servitization, and ecosystem perspectives, which can contribute to expanding our understanding of GP development.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents the impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU)-induced Trade Supply Chain Vulnerability (TSCV) on the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in India by leveraging the World Bank Enterprise Survey data for 2014 and 2022. Applying econometric techniques, it examines firm size’ influence on productivity and trade participation, providing insights for enhancing SME resilience and trade participation amid uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

The econometric techniques focus on export participation, along with variables such as total exports, firm size, productivity, and capital intensity. It addresses crucial factors such as the direct import of intermediate goods and foreign ownership. Utilizing the Cobb-Douglas production function, the study estimates Total Factor Productivity, mitigating endogeneity and multicollinearity through a two-stage process. Besides, the study uses a case study of North Indian SMEs engaged in manufacturing activities and their adoption of mitigation strategies to combat unprecedented EPU.

Findings

Results reveal that EPU-induced TSCV reduces exports, impacting employment and firm size. Increased productivity, driven by technological adoption, correlates with improved export performance. The study highlights the negative impact of TSCV on trade participation, particularly for smaller Indian firms. Moreover, SMEs implement cost-based, supplier-based, and inventory-based strategies more than technology-based and risk-based strategies.

Practical implications

Policy recommendations include promoting increased imports and inward foreign direct investment to enhance small firms’ trade integration during economic uncertainty. Tailored support for smaller firms, considering their limited capacity, is crucial. Encouraging small firms to engage in international trade and adopting diverse SC mitigation strategies associated with policy uncertainty are vital considerations.

Originality/value

This study explores the impact of EPU-induced TSCV on Indian SMEs’ trade dynamics, offering nuanced insights for policymakers to enhance SME resilience amid uncertainty. The econometric analysis unveils patterns in export behavior, productivity, and factors influencing trade participation during economic uncertainty.
