Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the hijab purchase intention of Muslim women by applying the theory of reasoned action: religious commitment, satisfaction (attitude), dressing style and knowledge source (subjective norms).
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from 603 Malay Muslim women in four universities through a self-administered questionnaire using a multi-stage cluster probability sampling technique. Smart PLS was used for data analysis.
Findings
The findings demonstrate that customers’ hijab purchase intention is significantly influenced by religious commitment, satisfaction, dressing style and knowledge source.
Practical implications
This study is for hijab designers because it is important for them to explore and examine the hijab purchase intention of Muslim women and then design the hijab accordingly, not only to capture a big segment in Kuala Lumpur but to obtain a competitive edge as well.
Originality/value
This is the first paper of its kind to examine the hijab purchase intention of Malay Muslim women.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this research is to analyze the motivation behind the hijab behavior in a multicultural environment of Malaysia; it is a religious obligation or fashion behavior. In an analytic thinking of motivation in influencing women in wearing a hijab, learning from the social environment on religious obligation and fashion in hijab has been discussed.
Design/methodology/approach
Quantitative analysis has been conducted for 100 hijab-wearing female students in the University of Malaya.
Findings
The findings were tabulated and the outcomes proved that most of the women took the hijab as a religious obligation instead of fashion motivation. Muslim women are still taking on the religious obligation in styling up the hijab. Modification in the hijab can be accepted in Malaysia, but the substantial design to wear the hijab is an obligation.
Originality/value
This study exclusively discusses the hijab as fashion and religious obligation within the context of Malaysia.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to demonstrate al-Biruni’s originality in the study of religion and the exploration of religious truth, while his firm stance on his religion effectively advocated his need to understand others more accurately.
Design/methodology/approach
This study is a review of al-Biruni’s literature that uses content analysis method in establishing al-Biruni’s approach in understanding other religions through three main methodologies. From these approaches, this paper advocates al-Biruni’s firm stance toward his own faith despite using a scientific study on Hindu, which is in contrary to other phenomenological scholars who find that religious truth is relative in nature.
Findings
Al-Biruni’s methods have proven that researchers are not necessarily required to dispose off their religious identity and commitment to faith, while simultaneously achieving objectivity and accuracy. Al-Biruni’s approach to understanding others may be seen as a remarkable early model of interfaith, intercultural and inter-civilizational dialogue seeking, eventually, to promote a harmonious co-existence within a highly polarized cultural and religious context. This inquiry demonstrates al-Biruni’s scholarly depth in his attempt to harmonize his methodology with the study of religious phenomena in compliance with Islam.
Originality/value
This study signifies al-Biruni’s intellectual background with his mastery of first-hand information as a solid basis and grounds for the effective understanding of others in a descriptive, systematic and comparative manner. This paper also signifies al-Biruni’s methods of understanding others without having to dispose off one’s religious identity and commitment to faith which could be exemplified by other religious scholars.

Purpose
Islamic art is characterized by a deep-rooted vitality and distinct form of expression that arises from its intimate position with regard to Islamic civilization. While civilizational turning points and major occurrences have held deep ramifications for its growth and development, the most prominent catalysts of civilizational status are not only found in the realm of the political and economic, but rather within a deeper expanse of ideas, spirituality, and societal consciousness; of which Islamic art acts as a prime indicator. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper would seek to survey the depths inherent within Islamic spirituality's relationship with Islamic art, and further isolate the reasons and source of their subsistence and continued prevalence.
Findings
The paper further delves into the relationship shared by spirituality and art, and the influences they exert upon one another. Moreover, it attempts to delineate between the mundane and transcendental spheres of civilizational growth and development, while seeking to come to terms with the sustainability of Islamic art, and its position with respect to Islamic civilization.
Originality/value
The paper concludes that Islamic art is sustained and defined by means of a unique catalyzing ethos responsible for Islamic civilizational culture that is altogether distinct from the temporal mundane reality of socio-political conditions of civilization.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a structural overview of speech recognition system for developing Quranic verse recitation recognition with tajweed checking rules function. This function has been introduced, due to support the existing and manual method of talaqqi and musyafahah method in Quranic learning process, which described as face-to-face learning process between students and teachers. Here, the process of listening, correction and repetition of the correct Al-Quran recitation took place in real-time condition. However, this method is believed to become less effective and unattractive to be implemented, especially towards the young Muslim generation who are more attracted to the latest technology.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper focuses on the development of software prototype, mainly for developing an automated Tajweed checking rules engine, purposely for Quranic learning. It has been implemented and tested towards the j-QAF students at primary school in Malaysia.
Findings
The paper provides empirical insight about the viability and implementation of Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) algorithm of feature extraction technique and hidden Markov model (HMM) classification for recognition part, with the results of recognition rate reached to 91.95 percent (ayates) and 86.41 percent (phonemes), after been tested on sourate Al-Fatihah.
Originality/value
Based on the result, proved that the engine has a potential to be used as an educational tool, which helps the students read Al-Quran better, even without the presence of teachers (Mudarris)/parents to monitor them. Automated system with Tajweed checking rules capability functions could be another alternative due to support the existing method of manual skills of Quranic learning process, without denying the main role of teachers in teaching Al-Quran.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study suitable visualization techniques representing Qur'an history and atlas. It focuses on analyzing the effectiveness of the concept map and the hyperbolic tree visualization techniques.
Design/methodology/approach
The effectiveness is measured in the aspects of the task time to complete a search based on questions provided. The task time is predicted using a task analysis technique called keystroke level model – goal operator methods and selection rules (KLM-GOMS). It is suitable to produce the hypothesis of which visualization techniques are able to maneuver the users to complete the task goals in the shortest time. The scope presented is the histories and locations related to selected chapters in part 30 of the Qur'an.
Findings
Hyperbolic tree is more time effective compared with concept map visualization technique. Concept map visualization system has been voted as the most satisfying visualization technique even though the difference is only 1.3 seconds. The more important aspect for this analysis is the presentation of the information. Information should be presented clearly rather than hidden although the hidden function should be provided for users to use. However, both techniques are predicted to support conceptual understanding.
Research limitations/implications
The focus of the analysis was data structure and how to get to the right nodes before retrieving the final output.
Social implications
Assisting developers of Qur'anic systems therefore improves the effectiveness of users of Qur'anic system in finding information.
Originality/value
Analysis on visualization techniques in context Qur'an history and atlas using KLM-GOMS study in terms of locations that lead to the birth of various chapters in Qur'an is rarely being discussed. Previous studies focus on development and implementation of textual Qur'an systems while this study focuses on user analysis using techniques mentioned above.

Abstract
Purpose
Muslims' commitment to religious learning and its institutions speaks of a genuine interest in a lifestyle characterized by education and wisdom, spiritual and religious well-being, in addition to sustainable intellectual and socio-cultural conditions of their communities. At the core of these critical contributions however, lays the question of the interplay between religious learning and community building, and the means according to which religious learning is continually the driving force for development and prosperity. This study aims to examine a number of questions pertaining to the character of Islamic religious learning while exploring the problems impeding religious learning from the effective development of the community. Specifically, this research draws on the perspectives of two prominent Muslim scholars, ‘Abdul Rahman Ibn Khaldun and Mohammad Tahir Ben Achour in an attempt to further understand the dilemmas impairing the position of Islamic religious learning in relation to the general context of Muslim communities. This inquiry opens new fields of critical inquiry on the role of religious learning today and brings to light some of the issues causing declining influence on the effective development of Muslim communities.

Findings
Ingraining the mind with varying degrees of information on a particular Islamic subject or mastery of a particular textbook without challenging students' minds with on-going problems and challenges, emerging ideas or trends, or growing emotions and behaviors; only causes memorized lessons to creep into stagnancy and inertia, thus shifting attention to the form and shape of learning as opposed to its essence and implications for community change and development. This calls for a systematic review of Islamic religious learning in such a way that it draws essentially from the primary sources of Islamic thinking while drawing learners closer to the folds of piety and moral discipline, embracing social change as a validating parameter for effective learning, while continually building active bridges with the surrounding community.
Originality/value
Research relied on original Islamic sources including works of Ibn Khaldun and Ibn Achour.

Increasing diversity leads to local, national and transnational challenges requiring a novel and explicit problem-solving approach. Practical wisdom, which emerges from an integration knowledge and ability through religious awareness, can promote peaceful coexistence in diverse societies with adequate theological and educational infrastructures. This paper aims to critically examine practical wisdom as the religious awareness to underlying building harmony in the diverse society.
Design/methodology/approach
Literature from refereed and peer-reviewed journals and articles was reviewed using thematic topic analysis to propose a model of the practical wisdom as a foundation for building harmony in a diverse society.
Findings
This result shows that there are several discussions with specific objectives of practical wisdom as the result of core understanding of religious awareness underlying the potential solutions in the diverse society; the significant essence of practical wisdom as the core element for building harmony; exploring how practical wisdom should be a wide particular element in building integrity and harmony in the diverse society.
Originality/value
Practical wisdom can establish peaceful and respectful relations amongst diverse segments of the population. It is, therefore, crucial for scholars and practitioners to explore practical wisdom in depth and devise ways of promoting this important characteristic at a social level through the exchange of common ideas and goals.

Abstract
This article examines the experiences of women leaders and their challenges in Brunei Darussalam. Globally, women are underrepresented in leadership positions. Though the Brunei government does not discriminate against any gender in delivering free education, medical facilities and healthcare, women in leadership positions are as well underrepresented. I try to understand the factors that challenge as well as motivate women to become leaders in Brunei. For this research, I conducted qualitative interviews with some respondents selected purposively. The study results show that women leaders in Brunei face challenges in obtaining financial support and accessing resources. Despite the challenges, there are some women who have been assuming and excelling in their leadership roles. The study identified that personal strengths have also been critical in contributing to their successful leadership.
