IF the most effective use is to be made of aircraft in Canada in the future, adequate research facilities must be provided to assist designers and the industry to develop improved aircraft, suited to the conditions and requirements of the country, and to solve the problems arising in Canadian aviation. The National Research Council has, therefore, with the approval of the Sub‐Committee of the Privy Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, undertaken to provide, in the National Research Laboratories now being established in Ottawa, facilities for aeronautical research.

The case can be used in strategic management, international business or ethics courses. In strategic management courses, students will be able to identify political relationships as sources of a firm’s competitive advantage. Students will also understand the role of ethics in the firm’s competitive advantage. In international business courses, the students will be able to analyze the role that corruption and bribery play in the analysis of a country’s institutions. Students will also understand how corruption in a host country influences a firms’ decision to internationalize. Finally, students will understand the challenges that firms face when serving customers in other countries. In ethics courses, students will understand the nature of state/business corruption, i.e. the abuse of public office for private gain and the concept of state capture, i.e. managers controlling the political system for their advantage. Students will be able to analyze the decision of whether to collaborate with unethical partners or customers.
Case overview/synopsis
Bell Pottinger Private (BPP) was a British public relations (PR) firm with a successful but questionable reputation of helping famous critical figures and despots improve their public image. In 2016, Lord Tim Bell and the other leaders of BPP were asked to create a PR campaign for the Gupta family. The Guptas were a group of businessmen headed by three brothers who migrated from India to South Africa in the early 1990s. By the 2010s, they had built a business empire allegedly thanks to a corrupt relationship with the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma and his family. The press and prosecutors were increasing their investigations on these relations. The case has two parts, which address two separate challenges and can be taught as standalone cases or in a sequence in two sessions.

Purpose
This paper aims to analyse the implication of the exit of the UK from the European Union (a.k.a. Brexit).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper analyses the options for the UK and the freedom this creates for the government to design its system of governance for the telecommunications and related economic sectors.
Findings
Brexit, other than the Norway Option or membership of the European Economic Area, allows the UK Government considerable freedom to reshape its system of governance for telecommunications. The strongest influence in such a redesign would be vested commercial interests, with the risk of subsequent underperformance and insufficient rigour.
Research limitations/implications
Events have moved relatively quickly, yet the outcome of the negotiations remains difficult to predict, beyond broad scenarios.
Social implications
There will be a need for greater involvement of consumers and business users in the process of recasting the regulatory governance system if it is not to be for the benefit of vested interests.
Originality/value
This is the first substantive analysis of Brexit for the telecommunications sector.

IN the September, 1956, issue of AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING, Mr McClements and Sq./Ldr. Armitagc surveyed ‘Helicopter Developments during the Post‐War Years’. The purpose of the present article is to discuss the subsequent developments which have taken place during the last six years. This period has been one of continued expansion in helicopter development and of much more widespread utilization of helicopters in both military and commercial operation. Since their initial development, over 150 different types of helicopter have been successfully flown. This figure includes many experimental machines or prototypes built by small groups. The major helicopter constructors have put about 40 types into quantity production and over 10,000 helicopters have been built in the Western countries. These have been predominantly for the military services, the large majority being built in U.S.A., but something approaching 2,000 have been used in commercial operations.

Abstract
The emergence of new interconnection technologies involving double‐sided surface mounted components has put stronger restrictions on the method of preserving the solderable finish on printed circuit (PC) boards. The popular Sn/Pb coatings have come under strong scrutiny due to environmental hazards of lead and also because they do not provide flat, planar surfaces for SM assembly. Organic solderability preservative coatings (OSP) are emerging as strong contenders for replacing Sn/Pb surface finishes. Benzotriazole based organic coatings have been successfully used in the past by several electronics manufacturers. However, assembly technologies involving multiple thermal operations have necessitated a fundamental understanding of the thermal stabilities and the mechanism of corrosion protection provided by the OSPs. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the thermal stabilities of two organic corrosion protection coatings. Although both are organic azole based, they operate in two distinct regimes: one forming thin films (∼100 Å) and the other forming thick films (∼5000 Å). The mechanism of surface protection has been studied using direct surface analytical techniques such as X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). The solderability of the copper was measured by wetting balance techniques and correlated to the amount of copper oxidation. The results indicate that, although the thin films provide excellent protection for storage and handling operations, they decompose under heat, thereby causing oxidation of the copper. The thick films appear to withstand multiple thermal cycling. However, the underlying copper substrate can still be oxidised by oxygen diffusion through pores or cracks, or the film may undergo chemical changes that render the copper unsolderable.
