Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the anti‐sedimentation of the acrylic resin containing long afterglow phosphors (SrMgAl4O8:Eu2+, Dy3+).

Design/methodology/approach

The phosphors were first modified by the vinylsilane coupling agent MPS (3‐(methacryloxypropyl)‐trimethoxysilane). Then, the acrylic resin containing modified phosphors was synthesised by in situ polymerisation. Meanwhile, the compared blend sample was prepared by pure acylic resin with no modified phosphors in the same content. When the two resins were coated on glass, the films were characterised by ATR‐FTIR, SEM and TGA. The sedimentation performances of liquid resins were also observed.

Findings

Results showed that anti‐sedimentation of acrylic resin with phosphors by in situ polymerisation was enhanced greatly, because the phosphors have been connected with the macromolecule chain, and dispersed homogeneously with no aggregation, so preventing its sedimentation.

Research limitations/implications

Researchers are encouraged to test the proposed method and enhance the anti‐sedimentation further.

Practical implications

This method provides an idea to solve the problem of anti‐sedimentation in luminescent paint containing long afterglow phosphors in practical production and application.

Originality/value

This paper introduced the in situ polymerisation to enhance the anti‐sedimentation of acrylic resin containing long afterglow phosphors and it can be applied also to other inorganic powders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report on a study which aims to improve the compatibility of the long afterglow phosphors SrMgAl4O8:Eu2+, Dy3+with organic matrix, including its water resistance.

Design/methodology/approach

The phosphors were modified by the lauric acid‐based Al‐Zr coupling agent (CA). Then, they were characterised by attenuated total reflection fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR), pH and electric conductivity in water, scanning electron microscope (SEM), contact angle and fluorescence decay curves before and after modification.

Findings

The pH and electric conductivity displayed the improved water resistance, as the Al‐Zr CA addition increased, and the minimum contact angle with resin decreased from 68.3 to 40.3°C, which showed that the compatibility with organic matrix was enhanced significantly. The afterglow luminous properties were unimpaired.

Research limitations/implications

The researchers are encouraged to test the proposed method and enhance the compatibility further.

Practical implications

This method will extend the applications of phosphors in the paint, coatings, ink and plastics industry.

Originality/value

This paper introduces the lauric acid‐based Al‐Zr CA to modify the luminescent pigments of long afterglow phosphors; it can be also applied to other inorganic powders.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the impact of green finance on the heterogeneity of enterprise green technology innovation and the underlying mechanism between them.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the data of China's A-share listed enterprises from 2008 to 2020 and the fixed effect model, the authors empirically explore the relationship and mechanism between green finance and green technology innovation by constructing the green finance index while considering both the quality and quantity of innovation.

Findings

The study suggests that green finance is positively related to the quality and quantity of enterprise green technology innovation, while green finance is more effective in stimulating the quality of green technology innovation than quantity. In addition, alleviating financial mismatch and improving the quality of environmental information disclosure are core mechanisms during the process of green finance facilitating green technology innovation. Furthermore, green finance exerts a more positive effect on the quality and quantity of green technology innovation with large-size enterprises, heavily polluting industries and enterprises in the eastern region.

Originality/value

This paper enriches the literature on green finance and green technology innovation and provides practical significance for green finance implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate a method of building a biomedical knowledge graph (KG).

Design/methodology/approach

This research first constructs a COVID-19 KG on the COVID-19 Open Research Data Set, covering information over six categories (i.e. disease, drug, gene, species, therapy and symptom). The construction used open-source tools to extract entities, relations and triples. Then, the COVID-19 KG is evaluated on three data-quality dimensions: correctness, relatedness and comprehensiveness, using a semiautomatic approach. Finally, this study assesses the application of the KG by building a question answering (Q&A) system. Five queries regarding COVID-19 genomes, symptoms, transmissions and therapeutics were submitted to the system and the results were analyzed.

Findings

With current extraction tools, the quality of the KG is moderate and difficult to improve, unless more efforts are made to improve the tools for entity extraction, relation extraction and others. This study finds that comprehensiveness and relatedness positively correlate with the data size. Furthermore, the results indicate the performances of the Q&A systems built on the larger-scale KGs are better than the smaller ones for most queries, proving the importance of relatedness and comprehensiveness to ensure the usefulness of the KG.

Originality/value

The KG construction process, data-quality-based and application-based evaluations discussed in this paper provide valuable references for KG researchers and practitioners to build high-quality domain-specific knowledge discovery systems.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the literature on disruptive innovation, this research explores how disruptive innovation directly and indirectly (via innovation speed and innovation quality) influences firm performance in relation to the contingency of market-supporting institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 207 firms was gathered through questionnaires targeting senior managers and R&D managers from high-tech firms in China with two waves including explanatory variables and outcome variables.

Findings

This empirical results indicate that disruptive innovation positively affects firm performance, and that innovation speed and innovation quality mediate the relationship between disruptive innovation and firm performance. Meanwhile, market-supporting institutions positively moderate the relationship between innovation speed and firm performance, but negatively moderate the relationship between innovation quality and firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

This study suggests that disruptive innovation is important to firm performance, innovation speed and innovation quality play mediating roles, and market-supporting institutions acts as moderating effects. A research limitation is that the data were collected mainly through a questionnaire.

Practical implications

Firms should incorporate disruptive innovation as an important strategy and improve innovation speed and innovation quality to promote firm performance, and policymakers should improve the levels of market-supporting institutions to facilitate innovation and performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes the literature of disruptive innovation by uncovering the positive effect of disruptive innovation and firm performance and the mediating effects of innovation speed and innovation quality on the abovementioned relationship, and revealing their contingency effects of market-supporting institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to simulate charge transport in monolayer graphene on a substrate made of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). This choice is motivated by the fact that h-BN is one of the most promising substrates on account of the reduced degradation of the velocity due to the remote impurities.

Design/methodology/approach

The semiclassical Boltzmann equations for electrons in the monolayer graphene are numerically solved by an approach based on a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. Both the conduction and valence bands are included, and the inter-band scatterings are taken into account as well.

Findings

The importance of the inter-band scatterings is accurately evaluated for several values of the Fermi energy, addressing the issue related to the validity of neglecting the generation-recombination terms. It is found out that the inclusion of the inter-band scatterings produces sizable variations in the average values, like the current density, at zero Fermi energy, whereas, as expected, the effect of the inter-band scattering becomes negligible by increasing the absolute value of the Fermi energy.

Research limitations/implications

The correct evaluation of the influence of the inter-band scatterings on the electronic performances is deeply important not only from a theoretical point of view but also for the applications. In particular, it will be shown that the time necessary to reach the steady state is greatly affected by the inter-band scatterings, with not negligible consequences on the switching on/off processes of realistic devices. As a limitation of the present work, the proposed approach refers to the spatially homogeneous case. For the simulation of electron devices, non-homogenous numerical solutions are required. This last case will be tackled in a forthcoming paper.

Originality/value

As observed in Majorana et al. (2019), the use of a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) approach, which properly describes the inter-band scatterings, is computationally very expensive because the valence band is highly populated and a huge number of particles is needed. Even by simulating holes instead of electrons does not overcome the problem because there is a certain degree of ambiguity in the generation and recombination terms of electron-hole pairs. The DG approach, used in this paper, does not suffer from the previous drawbacks and requires a reasonable computing effort.

Abstract

Purpose

This study delves into the nuanced relationship between financial constraints, ownership structures (state-owned and foreign) and innovation engagement within China’s A-share market, aiming to uncover how these dynamics vary across different industries and regional contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

By retrieving data from various datasets in China (2010–2022), this study analyzed the effectiveness of each variable, employing various dimensions to reflect innovation engagement among Chinese listed companies. Meanwhile, for the measurement of financial constraints, this study tested all four typical ones and opted for the KZ Index, as it is the most suitable for China’s A-share market. Then, by fixing the industry and year effects, the study examined the main and moderating effects. At last, in order to address endogeneity issues and capture the dynamic nature of innovation activities, this study follow the suggestion of Khatib (2024) and employed the two-step system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation.

Findings

The results demonstrate that while the government has introduced many policies to promote innovation, state-owned ownership does not consistently enhance innovation engagement as expected, especially when firms are in financial dilemma. Particularly, in Hi-tech industries, foreign ownership demonstrates greater interest and confidence in the innovation capabilities of China’s A-share market. Findings also reveal significant regional heterogeneity in the moderating role of ownership structures. While state-owned and foreign ownerships have a buffering effect against financial constraints in the eastern and western regions, but this effect is notably different in the middle part, even though it is China’s political heartland.

Originality/value

The findings offer a different insight for policymakers and corporate strategists, suggesting that targeted financial and regulatory policies that leverage specific ownership structures can foster innovation in different ways, particularly in financially constrained environments. However, how to stimulate innovation vitality in the middle part of China still requires further research.

Abstract

Purpose

The research aims to investigate the impact of thermo-mechanical aging on SBR under cyclic-loading. By conducting experimental analyses and developing a 3D finite element analysis (FEA) model, it seeks to understand chemical and physical changes during aging processes. This research provides insights into nonlinear mechanical behavior, stress softening and microstructural alterations in SBR compounds, improving material performance and guiding future strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study combines experimental analyses, including cyclic tensile loading, attenuated total reflection (ATR), spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) line scans, to investigate the effects of thermo-mechanical aging (TMA) on carbon-black (CB) reinforced styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). It employs a 3D FEA model using the Abaqus/Implicit code to comprehend the nonlinear behavior and stress softening response, offering a holistic understanding of aging processes and mechanical behavior under cyclic-loading.

Findings

This study reveals significant insights into SBR behavior during thermo-mechanical aging. Findings include surface roughness variations, chemical alterations and microstructural changes. Notably, a partial recovery of stiffness was observed as a function of CB volume fraction. The developed 3D FEA model accurately depicts nonlinear behavior, stress softening and strain fields around CB particles in unstressed states, predicting hysteresis and energy dissipation in aged SBRs.

Originality/value

This research offers novel insights by comprehensively investigating the impact of thermo-mechanical aging on CB-reinforced-SBR. The fusion of experimental techniques with FEA simulations reveals time-dependent mechanical behavior and microstructural changes in SBR materials. The model serves as a valuable tool for predicting material responses under various conditions, advancing the design and engineering of SBR-based products across industries.

Abstract

The global popularity of short video platforms has surged with the rapid development of mobile internet and 5G technology. DOUYIN, among other platforms, has amassed a massive user base in China. This study presents a theoretical framework based on media dependency theory and user stickiness perspectives. It identifies three key factors that affect user stickiness: platform algorithms, content resources and user interaction. An interpretive philosophy and inductive qualitative approach were adopted to conduct an in-depth case study of DOUYIN. Thematic analysis of secondary data from various sources was used. The findings demonstrate DOUYIN’s innovative approach to utilising advanced algorithms, diverse content and social interactions to enhance user engagement. DOUYIN utilises machine learning techniques to create user profiles and comprehend video content. It subsequently provides real-time personalised recommendations and optimises the algorithms based on user feedback. DOUYIN also incorporates PGC-, UGC- and PUGC-generated content, supported by a creator incentive system. Moreover, DOUYIN enables interactions between users, creators and the platform through commenting, sharing and live streaming features.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the pattern between government innovation funding and enterprise value creation. Many factors, including government innovation funding, R&D ability, corporate governance and some company characteristics significantly affected the efficiency of firm value creation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposed a novel methodology based on clustering-rough sets to explore the characteristics of enterprise value creation behavior, and map the relationship between government innovation funding and enterprise value creation. The agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) algorithm were used to classify firm performance and get two types of value creation efficiencies and to discretize condition attributes because the rough set theory cannot deal with continuous attributes. This paper utilized the rough sets method to realize data mining and get rules of government innovation funding and enterprise value creation.

Findings

R&D ability, proportion of independent directors, remuneration of directors, operating revenue, number of employees, price-earnings ratio, quick ratio, capital intensity and ROA were important to identify firm value creation efficiency when government funded the firms. Firms of high level of government innovation funding, high lagged R&D ratio, high remuneration of directors, low price-earnings ratio, low quick ratio, moderate capital intensity and high ROA were more likely to have high efficiency of value creation.

Originality/value

Since China implemented the innovation-driven development strategy, facilitating enterprise innovation has become an important way to achieve high-quality economic growth. With constantly increasing of Chinese government innovation funding, studying on the effect of government innovation funding on firm’s value creation is significant to improve the efficiency of government resource allocation. It is valuable to reveal the pattern between government innovation funding and enterprise value creation based on the value added theory. The rules obtained could be used to provide decision-making support to improve the efficiency of government innovation funding and prevent waste of government resources effectively.
