Abstract

The equivalent currents method has proven to be particularly effective in the identification of plasma boundary in Tokamak fusion devices. Anyway, the ill‐posedness of the mathematical model to be inverted calls for the adoption of suitable regularization techniques to be adopted, in particular to reduce the influence of the measurement errors. In this paper the equivalent currents method is illustrated, together with some details on its application to the plasma identification. In addition, two algorithms for the optimal choice of the representation basis are presented, together with a discussion about the obtained numerical results.

Abstract

The applied research in the thermonuclear fusion area is directed towards the design of a commercial reactor. In such a reactor, the room required for the probes deputised to measure the magnetic field for the identification step of the control system must be kept to a minimum, and the number and position of probes must be optimised. A possible approach to the optimal choice of a set of magnetic probes for the reconstruction of a magnetostatic field, based on a statistical approach, is presented and discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the relationship of career anchors with three aspects: the millennials’ professional skills, the millennials’ awareness of the replacement of jobs with new technologies and the technological stress in the millennials’ working environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The responses of 200 questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive and variance analysis techniques.

Findings

Among the three hypotheses raised, two were confirmed, showing that these young people recognize the development of professional skills through new technologies, but are not highly sensitive to the stress associated with technological innovations.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to a recent debate, which emphasizes the impact of the application of new technologies on the nature of study and employment levels.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a perturbation method for the Aχ geometric formulation to solve eddy‐current problems and apply it to the feasibility design of a non‐destructive evaluation device suitable to detect long‐longitudinal volumetric flaws in hot steel bars.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of the flaw is accurately and efficiently computed by solving an eddy‐current problem over an hexahedral grid which gives directly the perturbation due to the flaw with respect to the unperturbed configuration.

Findings

The perturbation method, reducing the cancelation error, produces accurate results also for small variations between the solutions obtained in the perturbed and unperturbed configurations. This is especially required when the tool is used as a forward solver for an inverse problem. The method yields also to a considerable speedup: the mesh used in the perturbed problem can in fact be reduced at a small fraction of the initial mesh, considering only a limited region surrounding the flaw in which the mesh can be refined. Moreover, the full three‐dimensional unperturbed problem does not need to be solved, since the source term for computing the perturbation is evaluated by solving a two‐dimensional flawless configuration having revolution symmetry.

Originality/value

A perturbation method for the Aχ geometric formulation to solve eddy‐current problems has been introduced. The advantages of the perturbation method for non‐destructive testing applications have been described.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to, which involved 123 students in their last year of an administration course at a private university in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, evaluate the importance of analyzing the pressure from new technologies on the careers of young university students from a career theory perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

From the perspective of traditional theories, the authors used “career anchors,” and from the perspective of non-traditional theories, “intelligent careers,” in which people develop three competency groups that are transferable between organizations: knowing why; knowing how; and knowing whom. The hypotheses the authors raised were analyzed using statistical techniques and the following results were obtained: young people do not see new technologies as a threat to their current job; people who see the “Knowing How” competence as being more developed feel less pressure from new technologies; non-traditional theories show a greater potential to analyze technological pressure than traditional theories; and, finally, the nature of people’s jobs produces different impacts on the pressure of new technologies on their careers, since people who occupy positions involving more human interaction with internal or external clients feel less threatened.

Findings

It was found that the lowest mean among the constructs analyzed was the pressure from technology on career. The correlations between the competencies of intelligent careers and the perception of the pressure from technology on career were weak, but significant, whereas the “Knowing How” competency was negatively correlated with the pressure caused by technology. There was no significant influence of the anchors on the pressure from technology on career. However, incorporating the competencies of intelligent careers improved the statistical model’s fit. In associating job positions with the pressure from technology on career, administrative and operational positions showed higher averages than sales associate and management positions.

Originality/value

Broadly speaking, it can be noted that traditional career theories, especially the vocational counseling approach, are not sufficient to explain the impact of new technologies on careers. At the same time, one way of coping with the pressure brought about by technological advances may be in using technology itself to develop “useful professional skills,” in a manner consistent with “intelligent careers.”

Abstract

The paper reports recent experiences of the authors in the automated optimal design of devices and systems for induction heating. The results presented have been obtained in the frame of a long‐lasting cooperation between Laboratory of Electroheat, University of Padova and Electromagnetic Devices CAD Laboratory, University of Pavia. In particular, two case studies are discussed; in both cases, the shape design of the inductor is carried out in a systematic way, by minimizing user‐defined objective functions depending on design variables and subject to bounds and constraints. When the design problem is characterized by many objectives which are in mutual conflict, the non‐dominated set of solutions is identified.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show, on a widely used benchmark problem, that normative knowledge concepts can be incorporated into particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms in order to improve their search ability.

Design/methodology/approach

Normative knowledge concepts are used within the framework of PSO algorithms in order to influence the cognitive and social components of the particle behaviour.

Findings

It is shown that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the performance of PSO on the selected benchmark problem, in terms of both best and average solutions.

Research limitations/implications

Although the chosen benchmark is considered to be representative of typical electromagnetic problems, different test cases may give less satisfactory results.

Practical implications

The proposed approach appears to be an efficient general purpose stochastic optimizer for electromagnetic design problems.

Originality/value

This paper introduces the use of normative knowledge concepts to control the cognitive and social components of PSO algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

International organizations are working on an unprecedented number of development initiatives relevant to people with disabilities. This makes it essential for the global disability community to be able to participate effectively in the decision-making processes associated with these programs. In light of this, this study aims to explore whether information technologies can help create a more inclusive global governance, forming the basis for equitable development for people with disabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

The results of a global survey of disabled people’s organizations’ (DPOs) leaders are discussed. This asked disability rights advocates about their experiences with accessibility and barriers to effective participation, low-cost accessible technological solutions for remote participation and freely available “off-the-shelf” online technologies – in particular social media platforms – to bridge the gap between the disability community and global governance processes.

Findings

Although only a small number of international conferences offer accessible virtual participation through web conferencing and other tools, responses from DPO advocates suggest that there is a strong demand for this technology and provide evidence of its potential for improving accessibility in global governance. Furthermore, disability organizations all over the world have embraced social media platforms to liaise with their grassroots and enable them to part-take in policy-making processes.

Originality/value

This study highlights community-backed technological solutions to persisting barriers that systematically exclude people with disabilities from fundamental global governance processes, illuminating the nexus of disability, accessibility, and participation.
