Abstract
This is the seventh article on social science, humanities, news and general databases in a continuing series of articles summarising and commenting on new database products. It has two companion articles: one covering science, technology and medicine (STM) appeared in Online & CDROM Review vol. 20, no. 1 and the other, covering business and law (BSL), will appear in Online & CDROM Review vol. 20, no. 3. The articles are based on the newly appearing database products in the Gale Directory of Databases. The Gale Directory of Databases (GDD) was created in January 1993 by merging Computer‐Readable Databases: A Directory and Data Sourcebook (CRD) together with the Directory of Online Databases (DOD) and the Directory of Portable Databases (DPD).

Abstract
It is reasonable to assume the existence of a new “dynamic” that influences how to measure reference services in libraries and how we evaluate the reference librarians who provide those services. Traditional, face-to-face delivery of reference services is reported to be declining, and there is myriad evidence, albeit largely uncollated and little evaluated, which suggests reference librarians are delivering significant and increasing amounts of the services they render in network environments. These trends raise questions, in turn, about how well we understand the current state of affairs in reference services, particularly where the management and evaluation of reference services in network environments are concerned.
The purpose of this study is to investigate relevant circumstances and conditions bearing – directly and indirectly – on changes in the nature, form, substance, and effects of reference services – through the reference librarian experience. Specifically, this attitudinal study will account for and assess changes in reference services (in the context of a medium-sized private university with a national reputation for successfully integrating information technologies into the educational process), with the further aim of developing an understanding of how to capture statistics and evaluate reference services and personnel in this dynamic environment. Reference librarians at a second mid-sized public university library were also interviewed for comparative data analysis in this study. Select portions of this paper have appeared in other publications in shorter, focused, introductory articles.

Abstract
Presents a bibliography of literature published during 2001 on library instruction and information literacy. States that the majority of articles dealt with the implementation of the Association of College and Research Libraries standards for information literacy in higher education. Reveals that another theme is that students are increasingly turning to the Web for their information needs to the exclusion of other sources which has implications for those who teach those resources. Also reveals the theme in the literature of collaboration and partnerships between faculty, information technology staff, other librarians, students and administrators.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to summarise and analyse empirical research on protective factors that promote academic resilience in ethnic minority children mainly aged between 13 and 18 years attending schools in the Nordic countries.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper was opted for a literature review of 23 peer-reviewed quantitative articles published between 1999 and 2014. The analysis entailed protective factors at both the personal and environmental levels in ethnic minority children.
Findings
Some minority children’s school performance may be just as good if not better than majority children when having similar or even lower socioeconomic status than majority children. Protective factors at the personal level included working hard, having a positive attitude towards school, and having high educational aspirations. Protective factors at the environmental level included supportive school systems, supportive schools, and supportive networks including parental qualities and support. The findings are comparable to the findings outside the Nordic countries with one exception; minority children in the Nordic countries performed better than expected despite socioeconomic disadvantages.
Research limitations/implications
Protective factors affecting academic resilience need further attention in a time with an increased global migration. Research implications may be related to how schools and policy makers develop supportive school systems, supportive schools, and supportive networks to contribute to making a difference for minority children’s educational opportunities in the Nordic countries.
Originality/value
Academic resilience is a relatively new research field in the Nordic countries. This review is the first review which has summarised and analysed existing findings on academic resilience in the Nordic countries in minority children.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the intricate dynamics of the hidden curriculum and its influence on student achievement in teacher education programs. Specifically, the study examines the mediating role of professional and constitutional values and the moderating role of sex in this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 282 bachelor of education fourth semester students (151 female and 131 male) participated in the study. General linear modeling in Jamovi 2.4.4 was utilized to analyze the data. The general linear model (GLM) mediation model was used to measure the mediation effects of the hidden curriculum via professional value and constitutional value on student achievement. Sex was accepted as a dichotomous moderator in the model.
Findings
Hidden curriculum had positive significant direct and total effect on student achievement. The mediation of constitutional values between hidden curriculum and student achievement was found to be significant and negative. Professional value was not found to be a significant mediator. The interaction between sex and constitutional value was significant and positive. Apart from this sex moderated professional and constitutional values differentially. Constitutional and professional values had significant direct component effects on student achievement. The findings contribute to the discourse of hidden curriculum by providing insights into the interplay of sex, professional values, constitutional values and student achievement.
Practical implications
The study has implications for educational policies and curriculum design, urging stakeholders to pay attention to the implicit messages communicated by the curriculum. Professional and constitutional values influence the hidden curriculum and achievement. Therefore, teachers should be equipped with an understanding of these values to manage the hidden curriculum in their classrooms. The study also highlights the gendered educational experiences and the necessity of implementing gender-sensitive policies and practices in schools and classrooms.
Originality/value
This study provides unique insights into the complex relationship between the hidden curriculum and student achievement in the context of a teacher education program in India. The findings highlight the importance of addressing the hidden curriculum in educational settings and emphasize the need for gender-sensitive policies and practices.
