Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how to design effective and practical controllers that satisfy multiple simultaneous specifications (MSS) criteria concurrently.

Design/methodology/approach

In automatic flight control system or autopilots, MSS such as good holding (small static altitude holding error), fast response, smooth transition (less oscillation, overshoot) are needed to be satisfied concurrently. So how to design the MSS controller effectively and practically is a very significant and challenging job. An MSS controller design method is proposed. The paper further applies the method together with the fine‐tuning technique to the 6 DoF non‐linear F‐16 fighter longitudinal control channel. Simulation results show its applicability to non‐linear flight control system.

Findings

It was found that the simulation results demonstrate that the MSS design method with controller fine‐tuning can be applied to the nonlinear F‐16 fighter longitudinal control system.

Research limitations/implications

The practical implementation of this research work needs further investigation.

Practical implications

The simplicity of the design algorithm facilitates the application of the design to other aircrafts by use of Matlab.

Originality/value

The simulation results presented demonstrate that the proposed MSS apply well to non‐linear F‐16 fighters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to test the new Fama and French (2015) five-factor model relying on a thorough sample of hedge fund strategies drawn from the Barclay’s Global hedge fund database.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a stepwise regression to identify the factors of the q-factor model which are relevant for the hedge fund strategy analysis. Doing so, the authors account for the Fung and Hsieh seven factors which prove very useful in the explanation of the hedge fund strategies. The authors introduce interaction terms to depict any interaction of the traditional Fama and French factors with the factors associated with the q-factor model. The authors also examine the dynamic dimensions of the risk-taking behavior of hedge funds using a BEKK procedure and the Kalman filter algorithm.

Findings

The results show that hedge funds seem to prefer stocks of firms with a high investment-to-assets ratio (low conservative minus aggressive (CMA)), on the one hand, and weak firms’ stocks (low robust minus weak (RMW)), on the other hand. This combination is not associated with the conventional properties of growth stocks – i.e., low high minus low (HML) stocks – which are related to firms which invest more (low CMA) and which are more profitable (high RMW). Finally, small minus big (SMB) interacts more with RMW while HML is more correlated with CMA. The conditional correlations between SMB and CMA, on the one hand, and HML and RMW, on the other hand, are less tight and may change sign over time.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the authors are the first to cast the new Fama and French five-factor model in a hedge fund setting which account for the Fung and Hsieh option-like trading strategies. This approach allows the authors to better understand hedge fund strategies because q-factors are useful to study the dynamic behavior of hedge funds.

Abstract

This study investigates the causal relationship between financial innovation (FI) as proxied by the bank credits to private sector, as percentage of GDP and economic growth in case of Azerbaijan using annual data covering the period from 1992 to 2018. For this purpose, the Toda–Yamamoto causality test with the framework of vector autoregressive (VAR) model is utilized to test causal relationship between the variables. The estimation results reveal that there is bidirectional causal relationship between FI and economic growth. The findings of the study suggest the researchers and policy makers to understand the role of FI in economic growth for macroeconomic stability and sustainable development purposes in Azerbaijan and other developing oil-rich countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the differences between Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Mainland in terms of education and also the influence of it on doing comparative educational research. Hong Kong SAR is ruled by the Chinese Government under the framework of “One country, two systems.” It makes Hong Kong SAR different from other Mainland cities based on different aspects including, education. The finding of this paper provides a systematic review about the differences between these two Chinese societies in terms of education and also implication for conducting comparative educational research in these two societies and also generating some implications for cross-national and cross-cultural study in education.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper made references from the framework proposed by Bray and Thomas (1995) in relation to comparative educational research to make comparison between Hong Kong SAR and Mainland China. Multi-level comparison is conducted between two societies in terms of education, especially aspects relating to conducting educational research sat social, school and individual levels.

Findings

This paper identified the influence of “One county, two systems” on education at different levels such as ideology, school management system and use of languages in teaching. Such differences affect the choice of topics, sampling strategy, research design, data analysis and interpretation and also ethical considerations when conducting comparative research between Hong Kong SAR and Mainland China.

Originality/value

This paper is an integrated analysis of conducting educational research in two Chinese societies and provides insights for further discussions and possible research about this topic.
