Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the perceptions of non-Muslim tourists towards halal tourism in Malaysia and Turkey. It also investigates the extent to which non-Muslim tourists are willing to purchase certain types of halal products and services.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative data were collected by conducting 35 semi-structured interviews with non-Muslim tourists in Malaysia and another 25 in Turkey.
Findings
Six major aspects are identified that describe the perceptions of non-Muslim tourists towards halal tourism. This paper also provides some suggestions for destination marketers on how best to cater for Western tourists and increase international arrivals.
Originality/value
This paper explores the perceptions of non-Muslim tourists towards halal tourism which is totally new research in destination marketing. It provides some original insights into the interactions between the religion of Islam and non-Muslim tourists. The insight should be of value to authorities, the industry and academics in both the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the moderating effects of residents’ demographic attributes on the relationship between perceptions of hotels’ social responsibility (HSR) practices and overall attitude toward tourism.
Design/methodology/approach
Perceptions of HSR were examined via social, economic and environmental dimensions. The research model was investigated with structural equation modeling and multigroup analyses.
Findings
The findings show that residents’ perceptions of HSR had a positive impact on their attitude toward tourism and that their demographic attributes had a moderating effect on this relationship.
Originality/value
Although there have been many papers on stakeholders’ returns to corporate social responsibility practices implemented by hotels, residents’ returns to these practices are insufficiently investigated. Moreover, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no research on the moderating effect of residents’ demographic attributes on the relationship between perceived social responsibility and overall attitude toward tourism.

本研究考察了居民的人口学特征在其对酒店社会责任实践的感知和对旅游整体态度之间关系的调节效应。

Los efectos de la percepción de los residentes en la responsabilidad social del hotel sobre su actitud general hacia el turismoPropósito
Este estudio investiga los efectos moderadores de los atributos demográficos de los residentes acerca de la relación entre las percepciones de las prácticas de responsabilidad social (HSR) de los hoteles y la actitud general hacia el turismo.
Diseño/metodología/enfoque
se examinaron las percepciones de HSR a través de dimensiones económicas, sociales y ambientales. El modelo propuesto se llevó acabo con modelos de ecuaciones estructurales y análisis multigrupo.
Hallazgos
los hallazgos muestran que las percepciones de los HSR de los residentes tuvieron un impacto positivo en su actitud hacia el turismo y que sus atributos demográficos tuvieron un efecto moderador en esta relación.
Originalidad/valor
aunque ha habido muchas investigaciones sobre los retornos de las partes interesadas a las prácticas de responsabilidad social corporativa implementadas por los hoteles, los retornos de los residentes a estas prácticas no se investigan suficientemente. Además, aún no hay investigaciones sobre el efecto moderador de los atributos demográficos de los residentes sobre la relación entre la responsabilidad social percibida y la actitud general hacia el turismo.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the moderating role of employees’ self-experienced social responsibility perceptions in the relationship between employees’ community- and environment-oriented social responsibility perceptions and trust in an organization.
Design/methodology/approach
The corporate social responsibility (CSR) construct is examined in the context of stakeholders including the community, environment and employees. The study was carried out with 438 questionnaires gathered from four- and five-star hotels operating in Alanya, Turkey. The proposed model was tested with the partial least squares method of structural equation modeling. Multiple group analysis was performed to test the moderating effect.
Findings
Findings reveal that employees’ community- and environment-oriented social responsibility perceptions have a positive effect on trust in the organization. Based on the results of multigroup analysis, the effect of employees’ community-oriented social responsibility perceptions on trust in the organization was determined to be more prominent in the group of employees with high self-experienced social responsibility perceptions. However, the same moderating effect could not be determined in relation to environment-oriented social responsibility perceptions and trust in the organization.
Originality/value
Studies focusing on CSR activities were mainly examined at the macro level. Internal stakeholders’ returns to these activities were not sufficiently considered. Contrary to previous studies that examine the link between CSR perceptions measured with Carroll’s pyramid dimensions and organizational trust, the current study examined CSR perceptions with the stakeholder approach. Moreover, the study discovered one of the variables defined as the black box that differentiates the returns that employees provide to CSR activities.

Abstract
Purpose
Muslim tourists participating in halal tourism activities represent a valuable niche market for global tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to clarify the concepts of halal tourism and Islamic tourism and to draw attention to some conceptual and practical challenges in the halal tourism industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on a critical assessment of the literature in this field. To differentiate the concepts and to discuss practical and conceptual challenges, the authors found some references by reviewing the existing definitions in related literature and the primary source of the concepts which is Holy Book of Islam, Quran.
Findings
The terms “intention” and “Islamic motivation” can be used to differentiate Islamic tourism and halal tourism. The authors suggest calling hotels that provide good and services in halal tourism industry as “halal hotels” and tourists as “Muslim tourists”. One of the leading practical challenges in halal tourism is having lack of halal standards, especially for hotels. As the way Muslims understand and adapt their lives to Islam is quite different, which means this market is not homogenous, the authors suggest that halal hotels should be scaled through different qualifications in different countries.
Research limitations/implications
This study is based on literature review, and it lacks primary research.
Practical implications
Current paper stresses the need for consistent use of Islamic-related tourism terms in industry. Hotel companies should have halal certifications that will provide assurance to customers. It is highly important for hotel companies to inform their target guests about the location of hotel before arriving at hotel. This is because halal hotels and other hotels are usually located in resort destination, especially in Turkey.
Originality/value
This paper is one of the leading papers that differentiates Islamic tourism and halal tourism concepts. It also provides several conceptual and practical issues in halal tourism industry.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present a theoretical account of the connection between artificial intelligence (AI) enabled technologies and Muslim-friendly tourism experiences (MFTX) using the customer experience (CX) theory, reference group theory and theory of tourism consumption systems.
Design/methodology/approach
A model research design is adopted to build a theoretical framework that predicts relationships between constructs. Critical assessment in tourism and AI literature is used to explore AI-enabled technologies in Halal-friendly tourism.
Findings
The findings of this paper have conceptualised the CX theory for Muslim travellers satisfying their religious needs in Halal-friendly tourism by suggesting a new construct called the MFTX. It also offered a theoretical model for using AI-enabled technologies to improve the MFTX.
Originality/value
This study provides a new theoretical model for using AI-enabled technologies to improve the MFTX. This paper is also expected to provide suggestions for tourism operators and service providers to cater to Muslim tourists’ needs using AI technologies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the selected antecedents (i.e. supervisor support and organizational justice) and outcomes (i.e. voice behavior and career satisfaction) of work engagement (WENG).
Design/methodology/approach
To gauge the aforesaid effects via structural equation modeling, the current study used data collected from hospitality and tourism academicians at public universities in Turkey.
Findings
The proposed model is viable. Specifically, WENG mediates the impacts of supervisor support and organizational justice on voice behavior and career satisfaction.
Research limitations/implications
Using longitudinal data in future research would make it possible to draw causal inferences. Testing research productivity as a criterion variable in future papers would enable the researchers to ferret about whether WENG would mediate the effects of supervisor support and organizational justice on research productivity.
Originality/value
Evidence about the factors affecting employees' WENG is still meager. Especially, there is a need for research about the factors that may affect academicians' WENG at universities. Research findings present valuable implications for tourism and hospitality educational institutions.

Abstract
Purpose
Research suggests the hotel industry has grown to integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs towards addressing issues relating to the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Nevertheless, how the progression of research has influenced the field of CSR and the SDGs remains unexplored. This paper aims to address the knowledge gap.
Design/methodology/approach
The research is based on a review of 230 papers from Scopus Indexed Journals – both mainstream and specialty. A content analysis was conducted to identify the major themes and the evolution of CSR research in the hotel industry.
Findings
Recent CSR research has tended to shift towards issues such as CSR communication and reporting from its earlier focus on the perceptions and practices of CSR. The SDGs, in general, and environmental sustainability, in particular, remain on the periphery of hotel industry’s CSR initiatives. This raises concern about the ability of CSR programs to facilitate the SDGs by 2030. This study highlights that both stakeholders (e.g. consumers, employees) and business forces (e.g. financial bottom line) can shape the hotel industry’s CSR strategies in contributing to the SDGs and greater sustainability.
Originality/value
The research advances the CSR and sustainability literature by undertaking a comprehensive review of business research on CSR in the hotel industry focusing on the SDGs, and advancing and facilitating discussion on existing knowledge in this field and how the field can be further developed.
