Abstract
WE have now to regard Indexing from quite another standpoint. Hitherto we have been assuming it to be undertaken from a co‐operative point of view, as in the case of Poole's Index and also in that of the Review of Reviews. In special work, the greater the magnitude of the task, as in the instance of Science as a whole, and any large divisions of Science, the more likely is co‐operative effort to be required, but speaking generally special indexes are largely the result of individual effort. It is here that that discrepancy in execution, allusion to which has been made earlier, becomes so manifest. It is my principal object to show how these contradictory methods, the natural result of several minds working on no fixed or settled plan, may be avoided. No space, therefore, will be wasted on detailing these inconsistencies, for the reader's and student's interests will be better served by the more positive method of pointing out how to index on a fixed and settled system. As in the previous section practical illustrations will appear later on to demonstrate this.

THE Annual Meeting proper was preceded by the Honors Dinner at which several awards were given for distinguished achievements in aeronautics. The Daniel Guggenheim Medal itself was presented to Glenn L. Martin, an early aviation pioneer, whose Baltimore plant is turning out patrol bombers, the B‐26, an advanced medium bomber, and the Baltimore's medium bomber specially designed for British needs. Mr. Martin is the last survivor of the American aeroplane pioneers to head an aircraft manufacturing company bearing his own name. William J. Knudsen was among the distinguished guests. The guest of honour was Griffith Brewer, President of the Royal Aeronautical Society of Great Britain, who called for speedy help to Britain in its hour of need. If the enthusiastic greeting given to Mr. Brewer is any criterion, then it may be taken for granted that the aviation fraternity of the United States is heart and soul with the British stand.

IT was very gratifying to see that in spile of the pressure of the times and the difficulties of travel, the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Institute was as well attended as ever with as wide a representation as in previous years. Nor was there any lack of excellent papers, although, of course, it was perfectly clear that some of the very best development work in aerodynamics, power plant, and similar fields could not be discussed because of military restrictions. Note‐worthy was the perfectly tremendous attendance at the rotating wing aircraft session at which, after some excellent papers, films were shown of the Piasecki, Sikorsky and Bell helicopters. This session was so. crowded that the audience had to be moved to another hall where standing in the aisles could be avoided. This is another confirmation of the importance which is attached to helicopter development by American aeronautical engineers.

A Summary by Dr. Alexander Klemin of the Papers Presented Before the Fourteenth Meeting of the Institute held at Columbia University, New York, on January 29–31, 1946. AERODYNAMICS IN spite of increased wing loadings, the use of full span wing flaps has been delayed, because of inability to find a suitable aileron. The Development of a Lateral‐Control System for use with Large‐Span Flaps by I. L. Ashkenas (Northrop Aircraft), outlines the various steps in the aerodynamic development of a retractable aileron system well adapted to the full span flap and successfully employed on the Northrop P‐61. Included is a discussion of the basic data used, the design calculations made, and the effect of structural and mechanical considerations. Changes made as a result of preliminary flight tests are discussed and the final flight‐test results are presented. It is concluded that the use of this retractable aileron system has, in addition to the basic advantage of increased flap span, the following desirable control characteristics: (a) favourable yawing moments, (b) low wing‐torsional loads, (c) small pilot forces, even at high speed.
