This paper aims to examine the experiences of diverse interprofessional participants in an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) working group with a common interest in EDI in one of the largest pediatric teaching hospitals in Canada and how the impacts of this experience extend outside of the group.

This qualitative research utilized an inductive approach in line with the Gioia methodology (Gioia et al., 2013) to explore individual experiences as participants in an EDI working group. Seven group members were interviewed in-depth and engaged in storytelling and journaling to capture their experiences and perspectives. The perspectives of six members are reflected here, representing diversity across ethnicity, professions and subjective experiences, with a common interest in working together to improve EDI knowledge dissemination, training and practice in a healthcare setting in Canada.

Retrospective research activities facilitated a co-constructed account. The analysis reveals that EDI group participation is a positive learning experience for individuals described as thriving in their careers. Analysis of collaborative perspectives emphasizes how collective identity cultivates vitality in the EDI group environment. EDI group members exhibit agency as proponents of social change, navigating and negotiating institutional norms in varying professional spaces.

The participants included members of an EDI working group in healthcare. Six perspectives are reflected here. Implications for personal experience and career development in organizations are discussed.

This study contributes to understanding how participating in specific interest groups, such as a group focused on EDI, informs personal and career development. It also contributes to our understanding of intrinsic motivation, as evidenced among volunteers in this healthcare setting. Our study also depicts an environment of vitality and learning and that collective thriving can be produced and may have extra-role implications.

This chapter is a comprehensive description and in-depth analysis of the current COVID-19 pandemic and political crisis in Chile. It provides a structural analysis of the Chilean economy and discusses how Chileans in different social strata are coping with both COVID-19 and the social revolution. This is a historical case study of Chilean society and its experience with a simultaneous pandemic and transformative social change. As the analysis show, Chile is known as one of the most economically developed and, until recently, most politically stable countries in Latin America. It is also known for the high quality and wide coverage of its healthcare, mental health services, and preventative programs. Nevertheless, with COVID-19, it is experiencing its worst pandemic in 100 years. This nation, which has a population of about 19 million, has reported over 1.5 million cases of COVID-19 and greater than 30,000 deaths (Chuaqui & Linn, 2016/2019). It has recently ranked among the top 10 countries in the world in COVID-19 related deaths per 100,000 residents. The first case of COVID-19 was reported in March 2020 in the midst of a profound social revolution that was ongoing from October of the previous year. The rapid social, economic, and political changes that have occurred with both the social revolution (estallido) and the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in disproportionately experienced unemployment, isolation, illness, and death and have produced in many “middle” and lower class Chileans an anomic crisis that includes anxiety and depression because of the uncertainty about the future. This analysis provides insights for interpreting the outcomes of the recent national election of delegates to the upcoming Constitutional convention and the potential reforms that will be proposed for the new Constitution to address long-standing social and economic inequity in Chile.

The purpose of this paper is to present the design and analysis of a robotic finger mechanism for robust industrial applications.

The resultant design is a compact rigid link finger, which is adaptive to different shapes and sizes providing necessary grasping features. A number of such fingers can be assembled to function as a special purpose end effector.

The mechanism removes a number of significant problems usually experienced with tendon‐based designs. The finger actuation mechanism forms a compact and positive drive unit within the end effector's body using solid mechanical linkages and integrated actuators.

The paper discusses the design issues associated with a limited number of actuators to operate in a constrained environment and presents various considerations necessary to ensure safe and reliable operations.

The design is original in existence and developed for special purpose handling applications that offers a strong and reliable system where space and safety is of prime concern.

Civil wrongdoings with consequent financial and other loss or damage to employers, employees and third parties may result in the course of various trade union activities. These day to day trade union activities take a variety of forms. The most common ones are inducement of breach of contract, conspiracy, trespass, nuisance, and intimidation. Each of these activities constitutes a tort which, unless the statutory immunities apply, would normally give rise at common law to an action for damages or, as is more frequent, enable the aggrieved party to obtain an injunction.

This paper aims to discuss the key aspects of the international trade in antiquities and the practice of philanthropic donation of objects to museums that allow for certain types of tax deduction manipulation, using a case of tax deduction manipulation from Australia and a case of tax fraud from the United States as examples.

Two thoroughly researched case studies are presented which illustrate the particular features of current and past antiquities donation incentivisation schemes which leave them open to manipulation and fraud.

The valuation of antiquities is subjective and problematic, and the operations of both the antiquities market and the museums sector are traditionally opaque. Because of this, tax incentivisation of antiquities donations is susceptible to fraud.

This paper presents the mechanisms of the antiquities market and museum world to an audience that is not familiar with it. It then clearly demonstrates how the traditional practices of this world can be manipulated for the purposes of tax fraud. Two useful case studies are presented.

The enforcement of liquidated and ascertained damages (LADs) can be problematic when the amounts are poorly assessed and there are lapses in the administration of contracts. This paper seeks to investigate the relevance of LAD clauses in construction contracts in Ghana, as well as the methods employed in their assessment and enforcement.

A parallel survey method was adopted. Three sets of similar questionnaires (slightly modified) were administered to professionals in client, consultant and contractor organisations in contract administration roles, to explore their experiences in the assessment and enforcement of LADs.

LADs are not serving their purpose in construction contracts in Ghana. Clients have created situations that render LADs unenforceable. LAD amounts are also not genuine pre‐estimates of expected loss to be incurred, as assumptions and guesses rather than genuine calculations on a case‐by‐case basis are adopted in their assessment.

This research indicates that the enforcement of LADs can be enhanced if clients become more diligent in their contractual, mostly financial, obligations. Since a purposive sampling procedure was adopted, the findings and conclusions of this research are only tentative, but nevertheless raise serious issues regarding contract administration practices in Ghana.

Although the current wave of globalization is the result of unprecedented scientific and technological advances, through history, movements of an international nature have been, to a large extent, about the spread of political and economic ideas across borders. “Geopolitical realism is based on the interests of the state”. Scientific and technological advances, together with the opening of markets to the free passage of goods, services and finance, has led to a huge growth in world trade. However, such positive developments have also their downside. The findings of the United Nations Human Development Programme Report highlight that global inequalities in income and living standards have reached grotesque proportions. Further, such disparities are linked to ever‐intensified environmental degradation and the extinction of some 11,046 species. Such circumstances have witnessed the growth of community‐based local currencies, the emergence of a social movement advocating corporate social reasonability (CSR) and a growing literature critical of the Anglo‐American corporate governance model, where shareholder wealth maximization is the driving force. Yet, the philosophy and practice of shareholder wealth maximization persists. This paper explores the effects of free‐market economics, globalization and western capitalist practices in terms of their consequences for the planet, people, profit and posterity (the four Ps). A case is made outlining the need for an advanced corporate governance model that integrates the four Ps. In so doing, the paper seeks inspiration from the ancient philosophy of Buddhism and, in conclusion, examines the role of the Business School in developing future, reflexive practitioners, equipped to effectively provide the necessary balance between shareholder expectations and stakeholder needs within a new paradigm of a balanced society.

This piece is a review of the animal selfhood literature in sociology, organized into four main parts. First, I review the sociological literature of human–animal interactions, in which sociologists claim that animals possess selves. Second, I review how sociologists have referred to the self, from which I construct five criteria of selfhood, including self as attribution, self-awareness, intersubjectivity, self-concept/reflexivity, and narration. Third, I address how animals have selves using these criteria, drawing on sociological and ethological evidence. Fourth, I critique the animal interaction sociologists’ specific claims of animal selfhood, including their epistemological failure to distinguish between human accounts of animal subjectivities and animal subjectivities, and their empirical failure to show how animals act toward themselves. Ultimately, I conclude that animal selves, particularly in an elemental Meadian sense, are potentially real, but in most cases are unobservable or unverifiable phenomena.
