Abstract
Purpose
This study seeks to investigate the ability of blockchain technology (BCT) to increase circular economy (CE) practices in the electronics industry, emphasising India and Taiwan.
Design/methodology/approach
The study adopts a mixed-methods approach. Initial qualitative semi-structured interviews examined how BCT could inform CE practice. The qualitative aspects were followed by the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches, and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), to analyse data from 391 industry experts surveyed.
Findings
The results show that the BCT has great potential to promote CE processes by improving the aspects of security, transparency and traceability. BCT adoption is driven by a conducive regulatory regime, stakeholder collaboration, and the availability of required technology.
Research limitations/implications
By identifying key drivers and requisite requirements for successful BCT adoption in CE practices, this research offers critical guidance for policymakers, practitioners and researchers. It adds to the wider conversation about how emerging technologies can support sustainability and efficiency in industry.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by providing a new lens to study BCT and CE practices intersectionality, particularly in the context of the emerging electronics industry and in countries such as India and Taiwan. Unlike previous research that studied either BCT or CE independently, this study uniquely illustrates how the principles underpinning these concepts, when implemented together, can positively impact sustainability outcomes within a resource-intensive industry notorious for generating highly significant waste streams.

Abstract
Purpose
The study explores the evolution of Indian domestic electronics manufacturing post-economic reforms and also investigates the lack of natural growth stages among Indian start-up/SME electronics manufactures.
Design/methodology/approach
The theoretical framework is inspired by Dawar and Frost's survival strategy theory that local companies may follow to overcome competitive threats from MNCs. The study adopts a qualitative methodology, more precisely, a phenomenological approach to walking through policy/regulatory reforms amid market distortions, technological gaps and colonial mindset from the perspective of Indian domestic electronics manufacturers. The study has adopted Gioia method of data analysis to inductively suggest a few research propositions.
Findings
The phenomenological approach revealed eight essential structure (essence) narratives to explore the complex issue that plague the industry: make in India, made in India, preferential market access strategy, equitable market access strategy, blue ocean strategy, competitive positioning strategy, technical capability and importance of policy/regulatory arbitrage.
Practical implications
The situation of Indian electronics manufacturing units is comparable to the bonsai tree situation, where natural evolution in business stages does not exist; they are born and die as start-ups/MSMEs. The study advocates for equitable market access by removing market distortions. The long-term solution may lie in making available locally manufactured products as a dependable alternative to the imported products or produced locally by MNC OEMs in terms of cost, quality, technology, volume, after-sale service and integrated supply chain.
Originality/value
While the favorable FDI policies, digital India and make-in India initiatives have strengthened domestic electronics production, it is yet to significantly impact India's position in global trade, including manufacturing and exports.

Abstract
Purpose
Fusion of new technologies and convergence has led to the emergence of new industries. This paper aims to present experiences of the concept of convergence from a patent citation analysis viewpoint. The main objective of the paper is to develop a tool for anticipating the emerging new industry segments.
Design/methodology/approach
The patent analysis methods have been used to get an idea of the stage of new industry segment in the intersection of the paper and electronics industries. The authors distinguish self‐citations from external citations, and further divide citations into two groups: within the industry and beyond the industry. Backward citations are used to evaluate the spill‐overs between industries and forward citations are used to evaluate the significance of technology‐based industry transformation.
Findings
The recognized trends of the trajectory changes and growing overlaps of technological fields show indications for possible convergence between industries. Differentiating between external and self‐citations within and beyond industry citations helps to provide more comprehensive prospects of a future technology competitive environment.
Research limitations/implications
This study evaluated technology development in converging environments. It would be a scientifically significant contribution if the novel patent analysis methods could be used effectively for creating understanding in advance about the technology development and industry convergences.
Originality/value
The presented patent citation methodology provides new insights into the analysis of industry evolution, technological innovations and business development related to converging industries and technologies.
