Abstract

Notwithstanding the relevance of managerial control systems (MCS) in any organization, as well the distinctive role they can play in family business, due to its specific features, the literature rarely dealt with the role and characteristics of MCS in family business. Taking into account previous contributions from different disciplines (organization, management accounting, and family business), the current work aims to better understand the state of the art about research in the field of MCS in family business in order to identify main research gaps and propose future research directions.

Forty-five articles have been analyzed, which were issued in 29 sources. Research findings show that the literature on MCS in family business is limited and not very conclusive. Some authors focused on the type of controls, other authors outlined the role of MCS in managerialization and the relation with professionalization. A few studies focused on some specific mechanisms, especially strategic planning and compensation. Some contributes dealt with MCS’ determinants and impacts. Differences between family and non-family firms were proposed. However, a clear and organized picture of the features of MCS in family firms, their determinants, and impacts has not yet been developed. Particularly, the impact of the distinctive features of family business on MCS represents an underdeveloped research field along with how MCS can be differently developed and used in different kinds of family firms. In the light of findings of the literature review, we propose a reference research framework on MCS in family business.

Abstract

The history of research in library science is not the easiest of subjects to speak on with any hope of presenting significant interpretations and conclusions, because as a topic of interest to the whole profession, in Britain at least, research in our field is a very new one, with the main developments of significance crowded into the last ten or fifteen years—it is as yet far too early to form a historical perspective. True we can review and catalogue a good many facts about research activity, and note certain milestones, but it is not possible, and will not be possible for another decade or two, to assess in a valid way, the significance of all this activity in terms of professional practice.

Abstract

A question of size THE Committee set up by the Minister of Education in 1957 to “consider the structure of the public library service in England and Wales, and to advise what changes, if any, should be made n the administrative arrangements, regard being had to the relation of public libraries to other libraries,” was the first such since the Kenyon Committee which reported in 1927. One of the most controversial aspects of the Roberts Committee's deliberations was the consideration of the minimum size (in terms of population) of an independent library system.

Abstract

I SUPPOSE that members of most library staffs are generously prepared to regard their chief librarians as eccentric. In these days of corporate management, group responsibility and participation we must expect, of course, to find the eccentricity more evenly spread. But be they few or be they many, eccentric librarians are not necessarily inefficient; they may be both competent and conscientious. If, however, they seem interested to excess in some small aspect of their responsibilities or if, alternatively, they have unusual habits which may modify or interfere with their performance, then they may be regarded as eccentric. I remember the public librarian who seemed to spend many of his working hours making and repairing the library furniture in a well‐equipped workshop in the basement. I remember the university librarian of whom a member of his staff once said to me ‘That man turns the loss of a char‐woman's duster into Greek tragedy!’ I remember another university librarian who took absurdly exaggerated personal interest in the quality of the packing used by other libraries when returning to him books which had been borrowed through a regional scheme. Then there was the classic case of Richard Porson at the London Institution. But his drinking problem made him inefficient as well as eccentric.
