Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the theoretical and ideological foundations for a research agenda on the social economy in South Africa.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper combines relevant literature research and case study work in a selected geographical region in the Western Cape province of South Africa to meet its research aim.
Findings
The perspectives emanating from the case study research on the nature of the diversified forms of new capitalist expansion and entrepreneurial activity in the case study area and particularly the way in which the new developments impact on the working conditions of farm workers lead to the consolidation of the authors' option for a constructive research agenda in which the realities of new‐found economic opportunity and prevailing conditions of exclusion are both negotiated.
Research limitations/implications
From the point of view of an ongoing research agenda, further empirical and literature research will be required to deepen the understanding of the socio‐economic dynamics in the case study area and in the process further refine the identified theoretical and ideological position.
Originality/value
The paper contributes towards defining the theoretical and ideological foundations of a research agenda on the social economy in South Africa. As such, the way in which binary positions are avoided in positioning this research agenda in relation to the mainstream capitalist economic system can be considered as provocative.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore a range of conceptual and practical challenges faced in delivering an innovative programme targeted at staff of UK higher Education (HE) and further education (FE) institutions. The two major foci of the programme are: on the pedagogies and organization of knowledge required to provide a true “feel” for the life world, values and ways of behaving of entrepreneurs in very different academic disciplinary contexts; and on strategically and operationally making things happen in the participant institution.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is action research‐focused. Its aim is to explore the validity of a concept of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education which is truly interdisciplinary. It tests out in practice a “Mastery” model of an entrepreneurship educator in HE and FE.
Findings
The basic structure of the model is found to be appropriate as is its social constructionist view of education upon which it is founded. Importantly it values learning through practice, which may not be a total reflection of what is taught on the programme, equally with the application of programme knowledge.
Originality/value
The conceptual model and resultant programme are arguably unique in their total focus on behaviours in different organizational and disciplinary contexts.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the impact of engaging in serious leisure (SL) on the well-being (WB) and self-perceived employability (PE) of university students while also considering the role of career adaptability (CA) as a mediator.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 905 domestic undergraduate students from China completed an online survey.
Findings
The findings reveal that participation in SL positively influences WB and PE. Additionally, the results indicate that CA mediates the SL-WB relationship but not the SL-PE relationship.
Originality/value
The theoretical contribution of this research comes from advancing our understanding of sustainable career theory through empirical testing of SL, PE, and CA on WB outcomes within a higher education setting. The practical implications of this study involve providing universities with strategies to support domestic Chinese undergraduate students in enhancing their WB and PE through active engagement in SL pursuits and the development of CA. Moreover, our findings serve as a foundation for future research investigating whether insights gained from domestic Chinese undergraduate students can provide solutions on a global scale to address the persistent challenges of improving student WB and PE.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the issue of residential price in Malaysia from a supply-side perspective. The views are directly obtained from medium and small-scale developers in Malaysia.
Design/methodology/approach
We used the semi-structured interview for analysis purpose. The samples are from property developers (medium and small-scale developers) and a single respondent from the Malaysian National House Buyers Association. We used the judgmental sampling method to choose respondents for this study. The interview results went through content analysis in order to derive common themes, resulting in the identification of four main themes.
Findings
First, developers view that the residential market is growing at a good pace, albeit slowly. However, the issue of unaffordability and construction costs remains to haunt the progress of property development in Malaysia. Second, from supply-side perspectives, there are several main reasons why the residential prices in Malaysia are uncontrollable: (1) costs of construction, (2) taxes, (3) existing units, (4) location and (5) urbanization. The third theme is the government support in catering to the needs and wants of middle- and lower-income earners. Most respondents agreed that the government has been providing low-cost houses supported by various incentives. Finally, on price control strategies for residential units, recommended suggestions are as follow: embracing different methods of construction styles, promote the uses of local materials instead of relying on imported materials, continuously review rules and regulations, provide more incentives and to build partnerships between the government and private companies on affordable housing projects.
Practical implications
The research is expected to present solid findings and claimsseveral significant contributions, especially policy-wise. We believe this contribution will enrich the existing literature on residential market. The present study is also predicted to produce noteworthy findings to all stakeholders in the real-estate industry, such as potential home buyers and existing house owners to housing developers, marketers and government policy regulators, as well as academic institutions.
Originality/value
This study is expected to enrich the existing literature available in the context of real-estate finance such as property price and property policy in emerging economies like Malaysia. One distinguishing factor which differentiates this study from others in the literature is the feedbacks obtained from medium and small-scale developers, therefore deemed to be more solid and reliable. The current research in real-estate finance is mainly focused on empirical analysis and we believe this study will offer a breakthrough view on the matter of residential market in Malaysia.
