Abstract
Flight, even under the most routine conditions, sets high standards of quality for all materials employed. Specifications for aviation fuels have never been obtainable without careful compromise between conflicting requirements, and present developments towards flight at higher altitudes and higher speeds accentuate existing problems and reveal new ones. This article attempts to review the known major problems arising with aviation fuels under these conditions of severity, and to indicate a number of practicable solutions.

Abstract
Today's jet fuels must adhere to tight specifications. Quality of fuel remains a prime concern. Thermal stability and lubricity are of great importance but pose problems as they tend to be mutually exclusive. Research continues in both areas in the search for improvements. Details the NATO single‐fuel concept whereby vehicles and aircraft alike can operate on the same fuel in battlefield operations. To attain this land vehicles would need to adapt to jet fuel. In a similar vein, moves are being made to bring about an international uniformity in specification of jet fuel. Finally details research into alternative fuels and concludes that continuing co‐operation between the fuel and hardware industries, improved methods of property measurement and research into alternative fuels are all vital for the future.

Abstract
In the case of stationary fuel tanks subjected to high ambient temperatures for prolonged periods, vaporization may account for a significant loss of the more volatile fractions. Although the quantitative loss might not be serious, fuel quality may be affected to the extent of difficult starting under subsequent low temperature conditions.

Abstract
The Presidential Address to the Liverpool Engineering Society by Mr. Farthing (the salient points of which are reproduced in this issue) has particular bearing upon lubrication and especially on young lubrication engineers. Mr. Farthing stressed the very wide field open to young engineers and the difficulties associated with training in order to cover as wide a field as may be necessary. It is usually so important to gain a wide knowledge before one can specialise and this is certainly the case with lubrication engineers. One cannot begin to fully appreciate the intricacies of a lubrication system with all its accessory components lubricating and guarding, for example, a large motive power plant or rolling mill, until one has more than a mere working knowledge of the plant itself, the duties it must perform, how it performs them and the snags that arise which might be overcome by correct lubrication. In view of the fact that lubrication systems are just as important in a textile mill as in a power station or a large brick works, the almost impossible‐to‐achieve‐range of knowledge that would simplify the work of a lubrication engineer is very obvious. Fortunately, lubricating principles apply to most cases and knowing how to apply one's knowledge from basic principles is the key to success in this difficult profession.
Introduction It appears that the heavy fuel oils, which gained a foothold in the slower 2‐stroke marine engine market after the 2nd world war, have now become more well…
