Abstract

THE Society of British Aircraft Constructors was incorporated as a company, limited by guarantee and with no share capital, on March 29, 1916. It is, therefore, junior to the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Royal Aero Club, but senior by two years to the Air Ministry and the Royal Air Force, and the elder of many other official, semi‐official and commercial organizations which the expansion of aviation has brought into being during the past thirty‐five years. The Society is young enough to retain within its counsels today many who were well‐known and active in the industry in the time of formation; old enough to have acquired a body of experience unique in its field and for its records to begin to qualify as history, of which some aspects at least carry interest worthy of the columns of AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING.

Abstract

IN less than two years‘ time—on March 29, 1966—the Society of British Aerospace Companies will celebrate the completion of fifty years’ activity. It was on March 29, 1916, that the Society of British Aircraft Constructors was incorporated, thus being younger than the Royal Aeronautical Society and Royal Aero Club but two years older than the Royal Air Force. The Society continued under that title until February 26 this year, when by special resolution at an extraordinary general meeting its name was changed to the ‘Society of British Aerospace Companies’. The new title thus retains the well‐known initials S.B.A.C. but embraces more appropriately the wide range of activities of the Society's Members— not only the manufacture of aircraft, but of engines, missiles, electronics, hydraulics, electrical equipment, and all other components and materials essential to a modern aerospace industry. The new title also brings the Society into line with comparable engineering associations in the United States, France, Germany and Italy.

Abstract

THE now well‐known Saunders‐Roe (Saro) “Cutty Sark,” which made its first appearance at the Olympia Aero Show a year ago, has proved to be only the first of a family of flying boats on similar lines, in varying sizes. It will be remembered that the prototype is a four‐seater cabin boat with a total weight of 3,600 lb. During the past year the possibilities of machines of this type up to 30 tons weight have been investigated, and, as a result, two have been constructed. The first of these is the “Windhover,” of 5,200 lb., a five seater, with three engines. It was found on investigation that to fit a third engine to the “Cutty Sark” would involve an appreciable drop in pay load, owing to the restriction imposed by the limited wing surface. The “Windhover” was therefore put in hand, to meet the demand for a 3‐engined machine carrying a good commercial load, on the same general lines as the other machine, but with each component part increased in size. The main details of this machine as a seaplane are given below, there being a slight reduction in performance when amphibian gear is fitted.

Abstract

A substantial number of students read significantly below grade level, and students with disabilities perform far below their non-disabled peers. Reading achievement data indicate that many students with and at-risk for reading disabilities require more intensive reading interventions. This chapter utilizes the theoretical model of the Simple View of Reading to describe the benefit of early reading instruction, targeting both word reading and word meaning. In addition, evidence is presented supporting the use of word meaning instruction to improve accurate and efficient word reading for students who have failed to respond to explicit decoding instruction.

Abstract

In the preface it is stated that a need exists for a ‘comprehensive treatment of the subject that will present fundamentals in broad perspective but without emphasis on any one type of system’. The book is written as a single volume introduction to the subject so as to fill this need in part. The missiles dealt with in the book are what, in this country, would be more properly called guided missiles; the author states that the broader description ‘advanced’ was adopted to avoid implying any unintended restriction upon the applicability of basic principles. The book is competently written and a number of diverse technical aspects are handled in a workmanlike manner. There is a refreshing soundness and depth to the book which regrettably is not often found in books on guided missiles from across the Atlantic. To cover a subject embracing so many different techniques in a book of less than 600 pages is, of course, a difficult task. The treatment on the whole therefore has to be concise. This in itself is not a failing as the reader will generally be expert in at least one of the areas and will gain enough from the book to refresh his memory and enough to see what are the main features applicable to guided weapons. In areas where the reader is less well trained it will be necessary for him to supplement the text by reading elsewhere. To aid him in this the book is adequately provided with references (without overburdening the text). The treatment is a formal presentation of the basic theories, emphasising the common ideas underlying, for example, signal detection in the presence of noise and quality control. The reader would finish the book with a sound idea of the fundamentals but with only the vaguest idea of how to set about the design of a missile. What is required is a sequel to this book where the logical design, say, of three or four types of missiles is worked through with a generous number of examples.

Abstract

Children's failure to develop proficiency in reading and writing continues to challenge educationalists, parents and carers. In this chapter we argue that the concept of dyslexia as an explanation for failure or as a starting point for intervention is fatally flawed. Our argument is that the concept is a socially constructed category with no scientific basis. Hence quasi-medical differential diagnosis is invalid and educationally divisive. We question this phenomenon that persists despite the protestations of Stanovich (1994, 2005) and others, through a brief survey of work in the fields of social categorisation, cognitive psychology and neuroscience. In summary our view is that whilst there are some ‘natural’ tendencies to categorise, with regard to literacy there is no identified objectively defined and unambiguous discontinuity between skilled and unskilled reader. There is, therefore, no support for the persistence of a distinctive category of dyslexia. Further, the notion of ‘dyslexia’ in itself does not support appropriate intervention.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, mHealth apps for COVID-19 have emerged as a new research area due to the diverse efforts to control the COVID-19 epidemic. Although there are many bibliometric studies on mHealth and its applications, no bibliometric study sheds light on mHealth apps for COVID-19 as a new research area. To address the above-mentioned research gap, the current study conducts a bibliometric analysis of research in mHealth apps for COVID-19. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the new area and its directions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a bibliometric approach to provide an analysis of the overall status of research in mHealth apps for COVID-19. The Scopus database provided by Elsevier was used to extract the analyzed data in this study. SciVal was used to perform the analyses, while VOSviewer was used for scientific mapping.

Findings

A total of 457 publications were published between 2020 and 2021 (until Tuesday, June 1) and cited 3,559 times. Publications were written by 2,375 authors, with an average of 5.20 authors per publication. Articles play a pivotal role in the literature on mHealth apps for COVID-19 in terms of production and impact. The research area of mHealth apps for COVID-19 is multidisciplinary. The United States made the largest contribution to this area, while the UK was the most influential. This study reveals the most productive and influential sources, institutions and authors. It also reveals the research hotspots and major thematic clusters in mHealth apps for COVID-19, highly cited publications and the international collaboration network.

Originality/value

mHealth apps for COVID-19 are gaining more and more importance due to their influential role in controlling the COVID-19 epidemic. Using bibliometric analysis, the study contributes to defining the knowledge structure of global research in mHealth apps for COVID-19 as a new, interdisciplinary area of research that has not previously been studied. Therefore, the study results and the comprehensive picture obtained about research in mHealth apps for COVID-19, especially at the level of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence applications, make it an effective supplement to the expert evaluation in the field.
