Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how to develop inhibition 57S aluminium in 2M NaOH solution.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is used to measure gravimetric and polarization measurements.

Findings

The results of the paper clearly reveal that the 0.2 M ZnO with 700 ppm polyaniline in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone solution is found to offer inhibition up to 71.2 per cent.

Originality/value

The paper deals with the development of newer inhibitor based on polyaniline. Gravimetric and galvanostatic methods were employed to evaluate inhibition efficiency.

E‐commerce plays an important role in today’s business environment, and that role will continue to grow each year. eMarketer predicts that by “2004, world wide e‐commerce revenues are expected to total USD 2.7 trillion”. E‐commerce continues to grow in the United States. “The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e‐commerce sales for the first quarter of 2004, not adjusted for seasonal, holiday, and trading‐day differences, was $15.5 billion, an increase of 28.1 per cent (±2.9 per cent) from the first quarter of 2003.” “According to a new study by RoperASW and AOL Time Warner, Europeans spent on average EUR430 on line between August and October 2002.” This compares with an average spend of EUR543 per head in the US over the same period.

Abstract

Purpose

The hygroscopic properties of 3D-printed filaments and moisture absorption itself during the process result in dimensional inaccuracy, particularly for nozzle movement along the x-axis and for micro-scale features. In view of that, this study aims to analyze in depth the dimensional errors and deviations of the fused filament fabrication (FFF)/fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D-printed micropillars (MPs) from the reference values. A detailed analysis into the variability in printed dimensions below 1 mm in width without any deformations in the printed shape of the designed features, for challenging filaments like polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been done. The study also explores whether the printed shape retains the designed structure.

Design/methodology/approach

A reference model for MPs of width 800 µm and height 2,000 µm is selected to generate a g-code model after pre-processing of slicing and meshing parameters for 3D printing of micro-scale structure with defined boundaries. Three SETs, SET-A, SET-B and SET-C, for nozzle diameter of 0.2 mm, 0.25 mm and 0.3 mm, respectively, have been prepared. The SETs containing the MPs were fabricated with the spacing (S) of 2,000 µm, 3,200 µm and 4,000 µm along the print head x-axis. The MPs were measured by taking three consecutive measurements (top, bottom and middle) for the width and one for the height.

Findings

The prominent highlight of this study is the successful FFF/FDM 3D printing of thin features (<1mm) without any deformation. The mathematical analysis of the variance of the optical microscopy measurements concluded that printed dimensions for micropillar widths did not vary significantly, retaining more than 65% of the recording within the first standard deviation (SD) (±1 s). The minimum value of SD is obtained from the samples of SET-B, that is, 31.96 µm and 35.865 µm, for height and width, respectively. The %RE for SET-B samples is 5.09% for S = 2,000µm, 3.86% for S = 3,200µm and 1.09% for S = 4,000µm. The error percentage is so small that it could be easily compensated by redesigning.

Research limitations/implications

The study does not cover other 3D printing techniques of additive manufacturing like stereolithography, digital light processing and material jetting.

Practical implications

The presented study can be potentially implemented for the rapid prototyping of microfluidics mixer, bioseparator and lab-on-chip devices, both for membrane-free bioseparation based on microfiltration, plasma extraction from whole blood, size-selection trapping of unwanted blood cells, and also for membrane-based plasma extraction that requires supporting microstructures. Our developed process may prove to be far more economical than the other existing techniques for such applications.

Originality/value

For the first time, this work presents a comprehensive analysis of the fabrication of micropillars using FDM/FFF 3D printing and PMMA in filament form. The primary focus of the study is to minimize the dimensional inaccuracies in the 3D printed devices containing thin features, especially in the area of biomedical engineering, by delivering benefits from the choice of the parameters. Thus, on the basis of errors and deviations, a thorough comparison of the three SETs of the fabricated micropillars has been done.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study compared Indian consumers' attitude (AT) toward and purchase intention (PI) from Western apparel brands, as a function of their Western acculturation (WA), consumer ethnocentrism (CE) in apparel consumption, consumer cosmopolitanism (CC) and country of residence (India vs the USA).

Design/methodology/approach

The sample included Indians residing in India and the USA, who were 19 years or older, and visited online or brick-and-mortar apparel stores. An online survey was administered through Amazon Mechanical Turk to collect the data. The data was analyzed through multi-group structural equation modeling.

Findings

WA engenders CE among Indian consumers, especially among Indians residing in India. WA and CC positively influence AT. CE did not have a significant negative influence on AT. Although a high CE lowers the PI, a high WA, CC and positive AT can translate into high PI.

Research limitations/implications

The study did not use an experimental design. Therefore, causal relationships between the research variables could not be explained. Majority of the respondents were male. This might have confounded the findings with potential gendered effects.

Practical implications

Western apparel brands targeting Indian consumers in India and the USA should focus on projecting their cosmopolitan and pro-Indian image to target this population's cosmopolitan and ethnocentric outlook, thereby enhancing PI.

Originality/value

The study proposed and empirically tested a conceptual model indicating the relationship between some of the important predictors of Indian consumers' PI in the context of Indians residing in the USA and India.

Study level/applicability

This case is appropriate for use in Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programs as well as advanced undergraduate courses. The case provides an apt simulation of the emerging Indian fast food companies in the competitive dynamics of Indian business environment.

Case overview

Rakesh an MBA graduate from the University of Hartford, Connecticut, after four years of corporate experience, made a decision to start a business of his own. Thus, was born Infusions Foods Pvt Ltd (IFPL) an entrepreneurial venture of Rakesh Raghunathan. IFPL launched its fast food chain of grilled wraps under the brand name of PETAWRAP. The brand was positioned to target the recent consumer behavior shift of Indian consumers which was towards healthy, nutritious food combined with the concept of necessity-based eating out.IFPL had successfully opened six company owned outlets by March 2011. Their strategy for success was built on the age-old four-point formula of a good-quality product, at value for money prices, delivered efficiently to the customers. The absence of “a hygienic branded product” in this Indian fast food industry contributed to the initial success of their company. Rakesh believed that key to building the brand image depended on quality in terms of operations standardization and product quality.

Expected learning outcomes

The case is structured to achieve the following pedagogical objectives: To identify the forces on which of an entrepreneurial opportunity is dependent; To analyze the changes in competitive dynamics of Indian fast food industry and identify the factors that lead to the emergence and acceptance of PetaWrap; To understand the challenges of building a brand in low-cost business model and the economics of cost incurred; To evaluate the business strategy and the business model adopted by the company for expansion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the stakeholders’ acceptance on blockchain and to investigate the model fit by using “Technology Acceptance Model” with special reference to corporate governance through cryptography to resolve the decades-old problems of financial record-keeping.

Design/methodology/approach

The whole analysis has been performed in the two steps, i.e. confirmatory factors analysis and structural equation modeling, to prove model fit between behavioral intention and actual behavior for using blockchain technology. Total 223 respondents have been selected, and the selection of the respondent is primarily on the basis of their previous experience with trading corporate equities.

Findings

The study determines empirically all the mentioned relationships of attitude, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness with the behavioral intention as per the conceptual model to prove the relationship. The results of the manuscript shows the model fit indexes for various constructs are prove the model fit as per the theorized model. The values of the various indexes are found to be under the permissible range which explains the relationship of various constructs based on the theorized model.

Research limitations/implications

Despite, the limitations in terms of selection of sampling methods, outcome and the interpretation, the results proves the fit with the theoretical framework. The major implication is to understand the real-time use of blockchain technology for the transfer of shares from one party to other.

Practical implications

Stakeholders in corporate governance namely customers, creditors, suppliers, community, employees, owners, investors, trade unions and social activists could benefit in different ways. Investors could benefit from being able to purchase equity at low price and to sell them into a market with greater liquidity, but they would found it difficult to camouflage their trades.

Social implications

The study opines that virtually all aspects of the corporate governance can be improved through the adoption of this technology resulting in greater transparency, improved liquidity and lowering costs.

Originality/value

This study will be a reference for global players in the financial industry that have started investing in this innovative technology vis-à-vis recent announcement of adoption of blockchain by global exchanges including NASDAQ, NYSE and Deutsche Borse, as a new method for trading, tracking ownership and monitoring systemic risk for strengthening corporate governance mechanism. This study will have a significant index for future reference where the technology adoption will be tested to have better corporate governance which will be useful for academics and professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

The Internet of Things (IoT) cloud platforms provide end-to-end solutions that integrate various capabilities such as application development, device and connectivity management, data storage, data analysis and data visualization. The high use of these platforms results in their huge availability provided by different capabilities. Therefore, choosing the optimal IoT cloud platform to develop IoT applications successfully has become crucial. The key purpose of the present study is to implement a hybrid multi-attribute decision-making approach (MADM) to evaluate and select IoT cloud platforms.

Design/methodology/approach

The optimal selection of the IoT cloud platforms seems to be dependent on multiple attributes. Hence, the optimal selection of IoT cloud platforms problem is modeled as a MADM problem, and a hybrid approach named neutrosophic fuzzy set-Euclidean taxicab distance-based approach (NFS-ETDBA) is implemented to solve the same. NFS-ETDBA works on the calculation of assessment score for each alternative, i.e. IoT cloud platforms, by combining two different measures: Euclidean and taxicab distance.

Findings

A case study to illustrate the working of the proposed NFS-ETDBA for optimal selection of IoT cloud platforms is given. The results obtained on the basis of calculated assessment scores depict that “Azure IoT suite” is the most preferable IoT cloud platform, whereas “Salesman IoT cloud” is the least preferable.

Originality/value

The proposed NFS-ETDBA methodology for the IoT cloud platform selection is implemented for the first time in this field. ETDBA is highly capable of handling the large number of alternatives and the selection attributes involved in any decision-making process. Further, the use of fuzzy set theory (FST) makes it very easy to handle the impreciseness that may occur during the data collection through a questionnaire from a group of experts.

Abstract

Purpose

Within a larger mandate of reviewing the key global trends concerning consumer protection in the electronic commerce (e-commerce) literature, this study aims to study the legal framework concerning e-commerce and consumer protection in the Sultanate of Oman and to analyse the current regulations concerning e-commerce and consumer protection.

Design/methodology/approach

This study followed the normative legal research approach and resorted to the desk research process to facilitate content analysis of literature containing consumer protection legislation and regulatory provisions in Oman in particular and the rest of the world in general.

Findings

The study reveals that consumer protection initiatives in Oman are well entrenched for offline transactions, but are relatively new and limited for e-commerce. In spite of the promulgation of consumer protection laws, electronic transaction law and cybercrime law, consumer protection measures for e-commerce in Oman do not address a large number of the global concerns necessary to build consumer confidence and trust in the online environment.

Research limitations/implications

There is a dearth of information concerning Oman on this topic in the extant literature. The research also witnessed the lack of empirical data on the issue of consumer protection and e-commerce in Oman that offer a detailed database of consumer complaints and associated outcomes.

Practical implications

The mechanism of consumer protection in electronic transactions is not robust in many countries. Because of the lack of comprehensive and robust legislation, consumers remain vulnerable in the online contractual purchase process. Moving beyond the fragmented legislation, many countries are currently mulling an all-comprehensive e-commerce law, implications of this paper will help the policymakers in identifying the focus areas.

Social implications

Consumer protection is a burning global issue in this era of consumerism. It is important to build consumer trust, transparency and integrity of transactions to reduce the risk and uncertainties of purchase.

Originality/value

Consumer protection studies conducted in the context of Oman, hitherto, deal more with data protection and dispute resolution mechanisms, and less with legal provisions, regulations and consumer confidence. The study shares newer insights based on a systematic review of legal and business databases. It is the first study of its kind in the context of Oman and the Middle East in general.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop an approach to design a warehouse that uses class-based storage policy in a way that minimizes both space cost and material handling cost.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors argue for and develop an optimization model for joint determination of lane depth, lateral width and product partitions for minimizing the sum of handling and space costs. In doing so, the assumption of perfect sharing is also relaxed. Using computational experiments, the authors characterize the operating conditions based on pick density and cost ratio. The authors further outline an approach to decide the conditions under which it is advantageous to implement multiple classes.

Findings

More classes are preferred when both the pick density and cost ratio are higher and vice versa. Factors such as demand skewness, lane depth and stacking height affect the space-sharing dynamics.

Practical implications

The paper gives the practical insights on when the conditions under which it is advisable to partition a warehouse into a certain number of classes instead of maintaining and when to maintain as a single-class block. It also gives a method to estimate the space-sharing factor, given a combination of operating parameters.

Originality/value

Very few studies have seen class-based storage policy in the context of block stacked warehouse layout. Further, block stacking designs have mostly been approached with the objective of minimizing just the space cost. This study contributes to the literature by developing an integrated model, which has the practical utility.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the addition of silicon carbide (SiC) microparticles and their contributions regarding the tensile and shear properties of the T800 fiber reinforced polymer composite at various fiber volume fractions. The tensile and shear properties of the hybrid composites where continuous T800 fibers are used as reinforcements in an epoxy matrix embedded with SiC microparticles have been studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The results were obtained by implementing a micromechanics approach assuming a uniform distribution of reinforcements and considering one unit cell from the whole array. Using the two-step homogenization process, the properties of the materials were determined by using the finite element analysis (FEA). The predicted elastic properties from FEA were compared with the analytical results. The analytical models were implemented in the MATLAB Software. The FEA was performed in ANSYS APDL.

Findings

The mechanical properties of the hybrid composite had increased when compared with the properties of the conventional FRP. The results suggest that SiC particles are a good reinforcement for enhancing the transverse and shear properties of the considered fiber reinforced epoxy composite. The microparticle embedment has significant effect on the transverse tensile properties as well as in-plane and out-of-plane shear properties.

Research limitations/implications

This is significant because improving the properties of the composite materials using different methods is of high interest in the materials community. Using this study people can work on the process of including different type of microparticles in to their composite designs and improve their performance characteristics. The major influence of the particles can be seen only at lower volume fractions of the fiber in the composite. Only FEA and analytical methods were used for the study.

Practical implications

Material property improvements lead to more advanced designs for aerospace and defense structures, which allow for high performance under unpredictable conditions.

Originality/value

This type of study proves that the embedment of different microparticles is a method that can be used for improving the properties of the composite materials. The improvement of the transverse and shear properties will be useful especially in the design of shell structures in the different engineering applications.
