Abstract

Traditional ceramic industries (ceramic tiles, frits, glazes and pigments) generate solid wastes, wastewater and gas emissions that have different characteristics depending on the type of product made. The present study was undertaken to define a series of test methodologies for characterising each type of waste. The approach involved defining the elements to be analysed in each kind of sample, subsequently carrying out the respective test methods for the determinations in terms of type of parameter and sample. In gas emissions, the study addressed fluorine compound analysis. In liquid samples, AAS and ICP‐OES techniques were compared, validating the methods by using reference materials and participating in CALITAX and AQUACHECK intercomparison rounds on wastewater analysis. In solid samples, ICP‐OES and XRF techniques were compared, validating the methods by participating in International Proficiency Tests of Analytical Geochemistry Laboratories (GEOPT‐7, GEOPT‐8 and GEOPT‐9). The selective electrode determination of fluorine in gas emissions yields good results. The study shows that toxicity can be determined in liquid and solid samples by the bioluminescence assay. In liquid samples, good results were found for metal elements analysis by AAS and ICP‐OES, the latter being better. Finally, in solid wastes the ICP‐OES technique has advantages in analysing minor elements compared with XRF, whereas XRF is more suitable for analysing major elements, as it is a faster, more reproducible technique.

Abstract

Many Information Theoretic Measures have been proposed for a quantitative assessment of causality relationships. While Gouriéroux, Monfort, and Renault (1987) had introduced the so-called “Kullback Causality Measures,” extending Geweke’s (1982) work in the context of Gaussian VAR processes, Schreiber (2000) has set a special focus on Granger causality and dubbed the same measure “transfer entropy.” Both papers measure causality in the context of Markov processes. One contribution of this paper is to set the focus on the interplay between measurement of (non)-markovianity and measurement of Granger causality. Both of them can be framed in terms of prediction: how much is the forecast accuracy deteriorated when forgetting some relevant conditioning information? In this paper we argue that this common feature between (non)-markovianity and Granger causality has led people to overestimate the amount of causality because what they consider as a causality measure may also convey a measure of the amount of (non)-markovianity. We set a special focus on the design of measures that properly disentangle these two components. Furthermore, this disentangling leads us to revisit the equivalence between the Sims and Granger concepts of noncausality and the log-likelihood ratio tests for each of them. We argue that Granger causality implies testing for non-nested hypotheses.

Abstract

Purpose

Dynamic capabilities yield positive effects to firm-specific advantage formation. Paradoxically, the body of literature on capability diffusion is scarce. The purpose of this study is to focus, thus, on this dearth of literature with an emphasis on exploring the transferability function.

Design/methodology/approach

An integrative review of literature on the dynamic capabilities view covers the organizational context determining capability sharing, supported by strategic communication and business networking theories for the fashioning of global capabilities’ administration model (GCAM).

Findings

Individual motivations and formal modelling of capabilities’ transference have been overlooked in previous research. Largely with a top-down orientation, the current paradigm of their diffusion is profoundly shaped by the organizational structure and its global governance practices.

Research limitations/implications

The GCAM’s architecture, based on transnational administration and hybrid transferability, opens horizons for multinational companies to develop their own capability management systems and is at the same time a new scholarly avenue in the field.

Originality/value

This study explores an untapped research gap and the formal modelling of a GCAM, while reconciling some of the weaknesses of academic research and industry practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the influence of homophily and social identity in eWOM adoption and influence on music consumption in streaming platforms. The study also proposes a framework for eWOM influence on product consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through an electronic questionnaire with a total of 524 valid responses. A partial least square methodology was used to approach the data analysis.

Findings

The findings indicate that both homophily and social identity have an influence on eWOM effect. Additionally, homophily shows influence on social identity being an important value to the total influence. It is also confirmed how eWOM has direct influence on music consumption.

Practical implications

Social information of consumers becomes more relevant than ever, as the results contribute to highlight its importance as a message adoption influencer and product consumption driver.

Originality/value

This study contributes to social communication theory by identifying homophily and social identity as valuable assets during eWOM generation. The research brings a new angle to social identity theory in the social network environment and influences eWOM adoption in music streaming consumption.

Objetivo

El propósito de este estudio es identificar la influencia de la homofilia y la identidad social en la adopción de eWOM y su influencia en el consumo de música en plataformas de streaming. El estudio también propone un marco para la influencia de la eWOM en el consumo de productos.

Metodología

Los datos se recopilaron a través de un cuestionario electrónico con un total de 524 respuestas válidas. Se utilizó una metodología de Mínimos Cuadrados Parciales para abordar el análisis de datos.

Resultados

Los hallazgos indican que tanto la homofilia como la identidad social tienen una influencia en el efecto de la eWOM. Además, la homofilia muestra influencia en la identidad social siendo un valor importante para la influencia total. También se confirma cómo la eWOM tiene influencia directa en el consumo de música.

Originalidad

Este estudio contribuye a la teoría de la comunicación social identificando la homofilia y la identidad social como activos valiosos durante la generación de eWOM. La investigación aporta un nuevo enfoque a la teoría de la identidad social en el entorno de las redes sociales e influye en la adopción de eWOM en el consumo de música en streaming.

Implicaciones prácticas

La información social de los consumidores se vuelve más relevante que nunca, ya que los resultados contribuyen a resaltar su importancia como influenciador en la adopción de mensajes y como impulsor del consumo de productos.

Abstract

The changes in strategic planning processes currently under study and installation by industry leaders are testimony to the dissatisfaction of corporate management with the processes used during the late '60s and early '70s. Frequently, these processes turned managers into efficient caretakers, unable to adapt to the constantly changing business environment. Part of the problem was the approaches were based on extrapolations of a business environment of relative plenty, one in which crises were operational rather than strategic. There had been little thought given to developing the means to deal with planning for shortages, for instance, or other important threats to the company's long‐term strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

In the last few years a new management style and paradigm has emerged with the aim of improving employee motivation, commitment and satisfaction through participatory management practices and more democratic organizational structures. Based on this new paradigm, this study examines the consequences of participative decision making for job satisfaction and trust.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the proposed relationships structural equation modelling was used on a sample of 3,364 employees conducted by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound).

Findings

Results confirm that participative decisions positively influence job satisfaction both directly and indirectly by means of employees' perception of trust.

Originality/value

Based on democratic management style, this study shows how participative decisions and trust can increase job satisfaction.

The chapter suggests two methodologies to measure inequality of opportunity in health in Israel, an ex-ante and an ex-post approach. In both cases, following the strategy recently suggested by Trannoy, Tubeuf, Jusot, and Devaux (2010), the chapter starts by introducing the production function of health, taking into account circumstances (the father’s years of education, his country of birth, the religion of the individual, his or her country of birth, age and gender) as well as effort variables (the level of education of the individual, his or her occupation and a variable describing his or her smoking habits).

The chapter also suggests then a decomposition of the overall health inequality into a legitimate and an illegitimate component, using the mean logarithmic deviation as inequality index, such a breakdown being applied to both the ex-ante and the ex-post approaches to equality of opportunity.

Abstract

Most economic models in essence specify the mean of some explained variables, conditional on a number of explanatory variables. Since the publication of White’s (1982) Econometrica paper, a vast literature has been devoted to the quasi- or pseudo-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE or PMLE). Among others, it was shown that QMLE of a density from the linear exponential family (LEF) provides a consistent estimate of the true parameters of the conditional mean, despite misspecification of other aspects of the conditional distribution. In this paper, we first show that it is not the case when the weighting matrix of the density and the mean parameter vector are functionally related. A prominent example is an autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) model with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) error. As a result, the mean specification test is not readily modified as heteroscedasticity insensitive. However, correct specification of the conditional variance adds conditional moment conditions for estimating the parameters in conditional mean. Based on the recent literature of efficient instrumental variables estimator (IVE) or generalized method of moments (GMM), we propose an estimator which is modified upon the QMLE of a density from the quadratic exponential family (QEF). Moreover, GARCH-M is also allowed. We thus document a detailed comparison between the quadratic exponential QMLE with IVE. The asymptotic variance of this modified QMLE attains the lower bound for minimax risk.

Abstract

Purpose

Eco-innovation is a relatively recent construct in the literature, which nowadays more and more researchers and academics consider as one of the strategies that generate a higher level of sustainable and business performance. However, little is known about the influence of eco-innovation practices on sustainable performance and business performance, particularly in the automotive and auto parts industry. Therefore, this paper aims to fill this knowledge gap and explore the aforementioned interdependence.

Design/methodology/approach

The influence of eco-innovation practices on sustainable performance and business performance is investigated through a research framework consisting of 5 constructs, 25 items and 6 hypotheses derived from an extensive review of the literature. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 460 companies in the automotive and auto parts industry in Mexico. The data were analyzed through a confirmatory factor analysis, descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results obtained indicated that eco-innovation practices have a positive influence on both sustainable performance and business performance in the automotive and auto parts industry.

Originality/value

This paper provides further insightful evidence of the influence of eco-innovation practices on sustainable performance and business performance, particularly in the automotive and auto parts industry.
