Abstract

This article focuses on the lesser-used notion of stewardship and stewardship-ism. Stewardship is a concept that has inspired the activities of several organizations whose mission is to preserve, protect and maintain natural, social and economic assets for the benefit of stakeholders and communities. As observed by Contrafatto and Bebbington (2013), stewardship has some resonance with current policy agendas that attend to the issues related to sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and accountability. Most of the existing works on stewardship provide several perspectives with the focus being either on normative foundations of stewardship or on its organizational and managerial implications. In particular, the stewardship-related literature offers a range of conceptions and approaches ranking from a relatively narrow view of the resources, sources and time frame of stewardship to very broad specification. In this article, the management, organization and accounting literature is analysed to propose a map of current theorizing on stewardship. In particular, drawing on the methodological approach adopted by Lowndes (1996), four theoretical vignettes have been proposed to illustrate different variants and approaches in stewardship framework. Each vignette provides a set of conceptual constructs, ideas and views to understand stewardship and stewardship-inspired behaviour. The variety of approaches/perspectives on stewardship, as illustrated from the analysis undertaken in this article, provides an opportunity for deeper theory-based understanding of social and organizational dynamics. In particular, it is argued that the richness of perspectives, focus and levels of analysis could offer insights to conceptualize, see and make sense of some of the challenges that are posed by a desire for promoting transition towards more sustainable ways of organizing our society.

This Chapter applies the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas to business’ role in the ‘War on Terror’. Specifically, it uses Levinasian ethics to explain how organisations, often with an abundance of ethical resources, become associated with military drones strikes against civilians, and offers ideas that challenge this practice. The chapter comprises several sections beginning with a brief introduction to the ‘War on Terror’ and the use of military drones. A concise discussion about business ethics and just war theory follows after which, the chapter explains Levinas’ ethics and his views on war. These ideas are applied to transform business ethical practice in this controversial area. The Chapter concludes with a summary of its main points.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to bring definitional clarity to the term “virtue” as pertinent to the behavioural sciences literatures on leadership; to identify a short and consolidated list of cardinal virtues commonly associated with leadership effectiveness; to provide a model relating leader virtues to leader outcomes (i.e. ethics, happiness, life satisfaction, and effectiveness); and to propose a program of research.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors systematically and comprehensively review Aristotelian and Confucian literatures on virtue ethics, and the literatures on seven leadership styles – i.e. moral, ethical, spiritual, servant, transformational, charismatic, and visionary leadership.

Findings

Six virtues, including four considered cardinal by Aristotle (courage, temperance, justice and prudence), and two considered cardinal by Confucius (humanity, and truthfulness), were common to all seven leadership styles.

Research limitations/implications

Researchers should aim to develop and validate a measure of virtuous leadership based on the six cardinal virtues presented here and also to test both the proposed measurement and structural models.

Practical implications

The authors' recommended program of research will ideally inform development and design of selection and training programs for enhancing virtuous leadership.

Originality/value

The authors provide definitional clarity to the term “virtue” – one that is well grounded in the moral philosophy and virtue ethics literatures; consolidate vast and varied literatures on seven different widely subscribed leadership styles and identify six cardinal virtues most likely to positively impact leadership effectiveness; present an organizing framework, structural model, and research agenda to catalyze research on virtuous leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

It is necessary for organizations to have committed employees to perform properly and be able to survive in a competitive world. One of the key components of organizational commitment is implementation of ethical leadership. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational commitment in fire organizations of Tehran.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive-correlational study was carried out in 2019. The sample consisted of 200 randomly selected participants, active in executive and headquarters divisions of fire department in Tehran. To collect data, a questionnaire with three different parts: demographics, organizational commitment questionnaire and the ethical leadership scale, was used. Data analysis were performed by AMOS24 and SPSS software, and data are presented as descriptive statistics of frequency, percentages, mean ± standard deviation (SD) and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.

Findings

Mean and SD for organizational commitment and ethical leadership were 3.44 ± 0.7 and 3.66 ± 0.62, respectively. Affective commitment had the highest average score among organizational commitment dimensions (3.63 ± 0.75). Among ethical leadership dimensions, ethical management showed the highest average (3.79 ± 0.70). Each component of organizational commitment, i.e. affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment, also showed a significant relationship with ethical leadership (p < 0.05). Model fit results revealed that independent variables could anticipate 87% of changes of dependent variables in organizational commitment.

Originality/value

The results show a significantly positive relationship between ethical leadership and organizational commitment among the firefighters. Therefore, by using ethical leadership method, i.e. being a role model, improving the relations between management and employees, establishing trust and mutual respect, managers of fire departments can increase firefighters’ organizational commitment, affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment and prevent them from quitting.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing from Social Learning Theory and Multiple Loci of Intelligence Theory, the purpose of this paper is to assert that, through the mechanisms of social learning and role modeling, perceived ethical leadership is positively and significantly related to ethical behavior of individual members of global teams. Moreover, this study argues that perceived cultural intelligence (CQ) of leaders which consists of perceptions of members regarding leader’s cultural knowledge and skills on how to act ethically in different cultural contexts would moderate the relationship between ethical leadership and ethical behavior of individual members of global teams.

Design/methodology/approach

To test these assertions, a survey study was conducted involving individual members of global teams in Australia (n=234).

Findings

Results demonstrate that perceived ethical leadership is positively and significantly related to an individual’s ethical behavior. Furthermore, results show that perceived leader’s CQ serves as a moderator in strengthening the relationship between perceived ethical leadership and individual member’s display of ethical behavior.

Originality/value

This study fills the gaps in the literature by examining ethical behavior of individual members of culturally diverse teams and the role that leaders play in influencing their individual display of ethical behavior. Such knowledge can provide insights particularly for human resource practitioners on how to effectively generate and ensure the display of ethical behavior in contexts that are culturally diverse like in global teams.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a concept is applicable in public service institutions, where responsibility means that the organization is capable of partaking and carving a solution toward urgent social needs. Universities are institutions in which social responsibility emerges not only because of their fundamental mission in the dissemination of knowledge, training, and creation, but also of the enormous challenges they face being a part of a greater society. A university is created to serve its society by graduating people who can contribute to its social and economic development. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of private universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The academic and professional programs offered by local universities have been developed to follow the revenue-generating practices that are widely used in other different regions of the world. The country has also seen a growing interest in CSR. Abstract

This article explores the nature of managerial commitment to such strategic changes as downsizing and quality improvement. Its purpose is to develop a theoretical framework of managerial commitment. Findings from a qualitative study are presented resulting in the classification of commitment in two dimensions: reward‐based and trust‐based commitments. A theoretical typology of the four types of managerial commitment is developed based on the dimensions: passive, calculative, trustful, and balanced types of commitment. The article argues that the general assumptions in commitment literature that people need material, social or psychological incentives and rewards which facilitate identification with an organization are one‐sided. It proposes that much more emphasis should be put on studying trust‐based commitment and elements affecting it for both economic and ethical reasons than prior research has done.

Purpose

The present study purports to unravel the mechanism in relationship among leadership behaviour integrity, organisational career development and employee engagement. Further, it also aims to understand if the employee feedback self-efficacy has any moderating influence on the relationship between leader behavioural integrity and organisational career development.

Design/methodology/approach

Pre-existing questionnaires are used for collecting data from a total of 417 employees working in the information technology industry operating within India. Analysis of the data is done using structural equation modelling technique.

Findings

Results of the study show that organisational career development partially mediates the relationship between leadership behavioural integrity and employee engagement. It is also found that feedback self-efficacy plays a moderating role in the relationship between leadership behavioural integrity and organisational career development.

Originality/value

The study helps to understand the mechanism of the relationship between leadership behavioural integrity and employee engagement through organisational career development with the support of ethical theory and social exchange theory. It also shows the moderating role played by feedback self-efficacy in the relationship between leadership behavioural integrity and organisational career development using social learning perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present evidence to examine the possible psychopathy of Robert Maxwell, a notorious figure in UK business history.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents research which retrospectively applied a tool to measure whether leading figures in twentieth century business history could be classified as being corporate psychopaths. As background to this idea, psychopaths and corporate psychopaths are defined. A measure of corporate psychopathy is explored as an aid to identifying corporate psychopaths in business history. This measure is then used in relation to senior corporate executives who have been nominated as potential corporate psychopaths and to Robert Maxwell in particular.

Findings

The paper concludes that at least some ethical scandals and failures such as those at The Daily Mirror have been characterized by the presence of CEOs who scored highly on a measure of corporate psychopathy. Maxwell’s fraudulent raiding of corporate pension funds crossed ethical and legal borders. Furthermore, Maxwell’s fraudulent looting of those pension funds crossed generational boundaries; stealing from older people’s pension funds and thereby leaving younger people/investors with less to inherit. Maxwell also had an international business empire and so his fraud had effects which crossed geographic borders. The paper concludes that using an historical approach to the study of potential corporate psychopaths illuminates what types of organizational outcomes corporate psychopaths may eventuate.

Originality/value

The paper is the first to use an historical approach to the study of potential corporate psychopaths.
