Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a buoyancy-gravity adjustment device and a fuzzy intelligent controller for the depth control of a storage tank in-service inspection robot.

Design/methodology/approach

The structure of the robot is first designed based on the construction of the bottom of a crude oil tank and explosion-proof requirements. The buoyancy-gravity adjustment system is used to control the vertical movement of the robot. The motion analysis of the robot indicates that the diving or rising process is influenced by hydrodynamic force and umbilical cord tension. Considering the nonlinear model in-depth control, a fuzzy intelligent controller is proposed to address the depth control problem. The primary fuzzy controller is used to compensate for initial error with fast response. The secondary fuzzy controller is activated by an intelligent switch to eliminate the steady error.

Findings

The proposed fuzzy controller can better solve the complicated hydrodynamic problem of the coupling of umbilical cord and the robot during depth control by classifying the error values of depth, velocity and acceleration.

Originality/value

The buoyancy-gravity adjustment device and the depth control system of the robot can move through the heating coils by safe and accurate diving or rising.

This paper aims to introduce a new acoustic positioning method to solve the problem of space positioning for online inspection robots within the storage tank.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a new acoustic positioning method to solve the problem of space positioning for online inspection robots within the storage tank.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed positioning system comprises two acoustic signal emitters and two receivers. Emitters are brought by the robot into the storage tank. Receivers are mounted on the external edge of the storage tank floor. The spatial coordinate values and motion directions of the robot in the storage tank are calculated by using the proposed acoustic positioning algorithm.

Findings

The experiment results and positioning error analysis indicate that the method can obtain the data of robotic space coordinates and motion orientation, while the positioning error of the method can be less than 20 cm. The accuracy reaches the positioning technology level of other tank online inspection robots.

Originality/value

This method not only expands the positioning of the inspection robots from 2D plane to 3D space but also significantly reduces the number of positioning sensors carried by a robot and improves the safety of a robot in the tank.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore which of four chosen factors (i.e. privacy concerns, FoMO, self-disclosure and time cost) induce a feeling of strain among Facebook users in terms of social media fatigue (SMF), and if this occurs, whether it further influences such outcomes as discontinuance of usage (DoU) and interaction engagement decrement (IED).

Design/methodology/approach

Through an online structured questionnaire, empirical data were gathered to verify the research model, based on the stressor-strain-outcome (SSO) framework. The SEM technique was employed for assessing the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The findings show that privacy concerns and time cost are strong antecedents of SMF and contribute significantly to its occurrence; while FoMO and self-disclosure do not exhibit any significant influence. Moreover, SMF positively and significantly affects DoU and IED.

Practical implications

This study enhances the existing body of knowledge on SMF and it can help: (1) individuals to be aware of risks and adjust their activities in balance with their well-being, and (2) social media (SM) managers to develop unique strategies to address the specific needs of SM users.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the limited literature on SMF by (1) introducing the concept of IED – as a consequence of SMF, and (2) creating measurement scales for IED.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop cause-and-effect relationships among the critical success factors (CSFs) of fintech adoption and rank these CSFs based on their importance in the model.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the objectives of the study, the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (FDEMATEL) approach was used. The data was collected from 16 experts using a questionnaire.

Findings

The findings demonstrated the interrelationships among the CSFs. In total, 16 critical factors were recognized as causal factors, and the remaining eight were considered effect factors. The CSFs were ranked based on their importance in fintech adoption.

Originality/value

This study is novel as it investigates CSFs of fintech adoption using FDEMATEL, and it contributes to understanding the nature of these factors and how they affect fintech adoption. The findings propose a significant basis to deepen fintech adoption and deliver a clue to design a practical framework for fintech adoption.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to solve economic emission dispatch problem in connection of wind with hydro-thermal units.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed hybrid methodology is the joined execution of both the modified salp swarm optimization algorithm (MSSA) with artificial intelligence technique aided with particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique.

Findings

The proposed approach is introduced to figure out the optimal power generated power from the thermal, wind farms and hydro units by minimizing the emission level and cost of generation simultaneously. The best compromise solution of the generation power outputs and related gas emission are subject to the equality and inequality constraints of the system. Here, MSSA is used to generate the optimal combination of thermal generator with the objective of minimum fuel and emission objective function. The proposed method also considers wind speed probability factor via PSO-artificial neural network (ANN) technique and hydro power generation at peak load demand condition to ensure economic utilization.

Originality/value

To validate the advantage of the proposed approach, six- and ten-units thermal systems are studied with fuel and emission cost. For minimizing the fuel and emission cost of the thermal system with the predicted wind speed factor, the proposed approach is used. The proposed approach is actualized in MATLAB/Simulink, and the results are examined with considering generation units and compared with various solution techniques. The comparison reveals the closeness of the proposed approach and proclaims its capability for handling multi-objective optimization problems of power systems.

Abstract

While concentration of population in urban areas continues, limited contact with ecological dynamics undermines awareness on human dependence on ecosystems. However, demands on ecosystems have never been higher than in today's urbanized planet, and cities make major contributions to global environmental problems. Enhancing green and blue infrastructure (GBI) in cities can reduce the ecological footprints of cities, while enhancing urban resilience and quality of life for their inhabitants. Urban GBIs provide multiple benefits to people in the form of ecosystem services (ES) and hold potential for providing nature-based solutions (NBS) to address urban challenges.

To adequately evaluate the ES provided by GBI, researchers have recently advocated integrated valuations. Integrated valuations aim at overcoming the limitations of the traditional single discipline and narrow approaches, by considering the multiple ways in which humans benefit from nature across the economic social and cultural domains.

In this chapter, we present examples of integrated valuations of ES in two Spanish cities, Barcelona and Bilbao. Both examples combine different valuation techniques and metrics, both monetary and nonmonetary, to account for the ES provided by urban GBIs and to assess their potential as NBS.

Our case examples show that urban GBIs provide many valuable benefits to urban dwellers. One of the clearest outcomes from these infrastructures is cultural ES, especially the multiple recreation and leisure opportunities they provide, which in turn has a remarkable positive effect on human health and well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of share pledging by controlling shareholders on earnings informativeness.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 23,120 firm-year observations from 2003 to 2019 in China, this paper examines how share pledging by controlling shareholders affects earnings informativeness, measured by earnings persistence and earnings response coefficients.

Findings

This paper finds that share pledging by controlling shareholders makes earnings less informative. The adverse impacts are more pronounced when share pledging distorts incentives of controlling shareholders to a greater extent and when the signaling of share pledging about a firm’s weak future performance is stronger. Finally, this paper further shows that the 2018 new regulation on share pledging effectively alleviates the negative impacts of share pledging on earnings informativeness.

Originality/value

First, this paper adds to the growing literature on the economic consequence of share pledging by documenting the adverse impacts of share pledging on earnings informativeness. The literature on the economic consequence of share pledging is often mixed, which justifies further research on the impacts of share pledging on earnings informativeness. Second, this paper documents a new signaling channel through which share pledging affects earnings informativeness. Third, the finding of this paper on the 2018 new regulation on share pledging may be interesting to research agencies, such as the Chartered Financial analyst institute and Institutional Shareholder Services institute that recommend tightening regulations on share pledging.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relationship between traditional timber frame structure and the diasporic identity of the Southern Fujianese Chinese community in West Malaysia. It analyses the cultural semiotics of Southern Fujianese traditional Chinese temple timber frame structure architectural language. This study addresses the under-examined domain of Chinese cultural identity representation through the architecture of traditional Chinese temples in Malaysia. It seeks to understand its underlying structure and process involved in revealing its disposition within the cultural phenomena from the perspective of Chinese cultural semiotics.

Design/methodology/approach

Selected Southern Fujianese traditional Chinese temples in West Malaysia built between the 18th to the 19th century that retain the traditional timber frame structure were investigated through field survey and focused publication review. Historical interpretive analysis and typological analysis supplement the cultural semiotics analysis to assess the timber frame structure attributes concerning architectural language expressions.

Findings

Findings reveal that the architectural language signifiers of the structural disposition of the timber framework and its corresponding formal articulation establish a clear statement of the Southern Fujian Chinese cultural identity.

Originality/value

The evaluation of the cultural identity signifiers helps to understand the underlying structure and process of the Chinese cultural semiotics in architecture. Results of this research substantiate the significance of timber frame structure in preserving the architectural heritage of the Southern Fujianese traditional Chinese temples. They provide important references for conservation and cultural studies of such building typology.

Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes that the three core underpinnings of dynamic managerial capabilities (DMCs) – managerial cognition, managerial human capital and managerial social capital – represent individual-level micro-foundations that influence corporate social responsibility (CSR). It further explores the interaction mechanism between the three underpinnings in influencing CSR, and their influence depends on the technological turbulence caused by big-data-related technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a quantitative research method and partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to test the relationship between latent factors based on a sample of 270 Chinese top managers.

Findings

The three core underpinnings of DMCs are positively related to CSR. Managerial human capital and managerial social capital mediate the relationship between managerial cognition and CSR. Technological turbulence's moderating effects are also tested. Specifically, technological turbulence amplifies the positive relationship between managerial cognition, managerial human capital and CSR but negatively moderates the relationship between managerial social capital and CSR.

Originality/value

Why are some firms more willing to participate in CSR than others mainly depend on the fact that the actual participants of CSR are the top managers who formulate strategies and implement CSR plans. This study, grounded in the DMCs framework and the upper echelons perspective, is arguably the first to link DMCs' three core underpinnings and CSR, and further explore the multiple drivers' mechanisms and boundary conditions. This study contributes to individual micro-foundation of CSR literature, and advances the understanding of whether and how top managers influence CSR engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the cultural cognition of Chinese Zhong-yong thinking, which is deeply rooted in Chinese Confucius culture, and to examine how entrepreneurs’ Zhong-yong thinking is related to new venture performance through guanxi network, and also examine how environmental turbulence affects the influencing mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper follows an empirical design. Data are collected from a survey administered to entrepreneurs in new ventures of China. Regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis.

Findings

Results show that entrepreneurs’ Zhong-yong thinking is positively related to guanxi and new venture performance, and guanxi mediates the relationship between entrepreneurs’ Zhong-yong thinking and new venture performance. In addition, environmental turbulence moderates the relationship between entrepreneurs’ Zhong-yong thinking and guanxi such that the relationship is stronger under higher technological turbulence or lower market turbulence.

Research limitations/implications

This research uses cross-sectional data, so causal conclusions cannot be made. In addition, more moderators should be considered.

Practical implications

The present study enriches the understanding of how entrepreneurs’ Zhong-yong thinking affects new ventures, which helps entrepreneur understand how to strategize according to external environment and develop what kind of cognitive style to deal with complex situation of their own venture.

Originality/value

This study is a pioneer in exploring non-Western cognitive style–Zhong-yong thinking in entrepreneurial context. It not only enriches the understanding of how Chinese wisdom affects organizational strategy and organizational performance but also advances the cognition research in the field of entrepreneurship.
