Abstract

This study investigates the role of grit in a work setting as well as interrelationships among work-related constructs among frontline employees of hotels. Based on the framework of grit and work-related constructs, this study proposes and tests a model that attempts to understand the dynamic relationship among the two dimensions of grit, customer orientation, job satisfaction, and job performance, with an emphasis on the moderating role of organizational tenure. The results indicate that consistency of interest significantly influences customer orientation, whereas perseverance of effort significantly affects job satisfaction. Job performance is significantly influenced by customer orientation and job satisfaction. The paths from perseverance of effort to customer orientation, from perseverance of effort to job satisfaction, and from consistency of interest to job satisfaction are significantly moderated by organizational tenure.

Abstract

Why is it that highly trained and seasoned executives fail? On the surface, this doesn’t make sense because they are very successful; yet research in the organization sciences provides no shortage of evidence to prove just that. From the classic Mann Gulch fire disaster of Weick’s famous collapse of sensemaking study, to studies of myopia of learning, escalation of commitment, threat-rigidity, dominant logic, the architecture of simplicity, the Icarus Paradox, to core competencies turning into core rigidities, and navigating new competitive markets using “old” cognitive maps, and many more such examples point to a ubiquitous phenomenon where highly trained and experienced professionals find themselves “stuck” in the heat of battle, unable to move and progress. On the one hand, for some, there is a desperate need for change, but are unable to do so, due to their trained incapacities. On the other hand, some simply cannot see the need for change, and continue with their “business as usual” mentality. For both, their visions of the world shrink, they have a tendency to cling onto their past habitual practices and oversimplify the complexity of the situation. In moments like these: DROP YOUR TOOLS and UNLEARN! This book chapter introduces a framework (grounded in clinical psychology) that has had consistent success in helping seasoned executives and key decision-makers open up the alternatives whenever they find themselves stuck with complexity.

Abstract

Youth unemployment is one of the crucial problems facing modern society. Although the findings of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Commission (EC) suggest that around 40% of young people are interested in starting their own business after finishing formal education, current studies indicate that the entrepreneurial potential of young people is still underutilized. The analysis of the trend of youth unemployment in the countries of the European Union (EU) in the period from 2009 to 2022 conducted in this chapter gave a clear insight into the decreasing tendency of youth unemployment from 15 to 29 years of age in the last 10 years. However, although there is a tendency for the youth unemployment rate to fall, it is still significantly higher than the unemployment of other age categories. Further analysis carried out in this chapter was related to testing three trend models on a selected data set on youth unemployment. The most precise measures, mean absolute deviation (MAD) and adjusted R2, unequivocally indicated the selection of the quadratic trend model as the most appropriate for the observed data set, given that the MAD value was the lowest (444.55) and the adjusted R2 coefficient was the highest (81.88%). Furthermore, through a comparative analysis of the linear and quadratic trend models, the authors predicted youth unemployment in the coming period and concluded that by applying the estimated equations of both trend models, a further decline in youth unemployment in the EU could be expected.

IN LESS than sixteen years time—on June 30 1997 to be precise—the lease on Kowloon beyond Boundary Street, and on the New Territories, will, according to British Law, expire. Naturally Hong Kong is concerned as the Peking Lease nears its end. Writing in the Daily telegraph on September 28 1981 Graham Earnshaw commented that China ‘obviously wants to keep Hong Kong as it is for at least the immediate future because of its immense economic value, and that is the main thread of hope that Hong Kong people keep returning to when discussing the future’. Kevin Rafferty concluded a lead article ‘The first city in Asia’ in the Financial times special supplement on Hong Kong (June 15 1981)—‘China and Hong Kong are two different worlds and it will take a lot of effort and patience to bring them together’. David Bonavia writing in the Times on October 3 1981 sees in China's recent ‘seemingly generous offer to Taiwan of easy terms for a political reunion’, ‘the true way to a possible solution for the eventual re‐absorption of Hong Kong into the People's Republic’.
