Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a case study about how academic librarians can contribute to the interdisciplinary research endeavors of professors and students, especially doctoral candidates, through an intellectualized approach to collection development.

Design/methodology/approach

In the wake of protest movements such as the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street, colleges and universities have begun to develop courses about these events, and it is anticipated that there will be much research conducted about their respective histories. Academic librarians can participate in those research efforts by developing interdisciplinary collections about protest movements and by referring researchers to those collections.

Findings

Through a case‐study approach, this paper provides a narrative bibliography about Southern Agrarianism that can help professors and students interested in the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street movements to see their research endeavors from a new interdisciplinary perspective.

Originality/value

The value of this paper lies in presenting a concrete example of the way in which academic librarians can become active research partners through the work of building collections and recommending sources in areas that professors and students may not have previously considered.

Abstract

LPP solve problem of acidic effluent storage. Laminated Plastic Products were approached by a company who manufacture castings and pressings in aluminium and other non ferrous metals. One of their processes involves the use of various very corrosive acids. Specifically these include nitric, hydrofluoric, sulphuric and chromic acids at concentrations of up to 30%. After use these acids are run to an effluent pit where they are held prior to their removal by tanker for disposal.

Abstract

Deregulation is having a major impact on all aspects of firm behavior in the banking industry. Bankers now find themselves in a more competitive environment which may require different operating rules for firm growth and profitability. To understand the types of adjustments that are taking place in this market, a national survey of 410 commercial bank chief executive officers (CEOs) was conducted and results analyzed. The primary objective of this analysis was to estimate the impact that deregulation has had on the CEO selection criteria within the banking industry. Bank CEOs were divided into groups based on tenure in office to measure the influence of deregulation on the selection process. A key result of this analysis suggests that the most recently selected CEOs view the ability to manage and motivate, and communication skills as relatively more important in their selection in comparison to the most tenured bankers. While change has occurred in the selection criteria, experience in the loan officer position is still considered a major asset for anyone seeking to become a bank CEO.

Abstract

Business school accreditation is currently striving to provide minimum guidelines that all schools must meet, while at the same time allowing for diversity, since schools are not homogeneous in their goals andmissions. The American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the long established accrediting body has been criticized for being monolithic in its development and implementation of standards for achieving accreditation. This issue has led to the development of a second accrediting body for business education. The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) was formed in 1988 in part as a reaction to concerns that the standards set by AACSBdid not recognize diversity within the missions of its member schools. The mission issue concerns primarily the role of research and terminal degrees as standards for accreditation. Critics contend that emphasis on research and terminal degree coverage favors the research oriented schools and has limited the number of AACSB member schools that can achieve accreditation. Approximately 280 out of 700 member schools are accredited (Sanford).

Abstract

Backshoring keeps gaining popularity with consultancies, politicians and businesses alike, yet academic research lags behind this seemingly increasing practice. Through a narrative, critical overview of literature the paper demonstrates incipient nature of backshoring research and identifies international business and economic geography as most relevant disciplines in furthering the understanding of the phenomenon and its managerial, policy and developmental significance.

The number of firms which backshored some or all of their activities from locations abroad appears to be growing, however due to unavailability of reliable data it is difficult to accurately assess how common backshoring is. There is a problem even with estimating the scale of the phenomenon which stems from the fact that the concept remains to be ill-defined. Consequently, current research is dominated by contradicting observations disallowing meaningful conclusion. However it is such shortcomings which arguably offer an unmissable opportunity for theory testing and development, and contribution to managerial practice and policy design.

Abstract

THE Reference Department of Paisley Central Library today occupies the room which was the original Public Library built in 1870 and opened to the public in April 1871. Since that date two extensions to the building have taken place. The first, in 1882, provided a separate room for both Reference and Lending libraries; the second, opened in 1938, provided a new Children's Department. Together with the original cost of the building, these extensions were entirely financed by Sir Peter Coats, James Coats of Auchendrane and Daniel Coats respectively. The people of Paisley indeed owe much to this one family, whose generosity was great. They not only provided the capital required but continued to donate many useful and often extremely valuable works of reference over the many years that followed. In 1975 Paisley Library was incorporated in the new Renfrew District library service.
