Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the US states and territories’ official tourism information websites based on the Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG) and Section 508 guidelines to identify the compliance of websites towards disabilities policies and their behaviour pattern.
Design/methodology/approach
The official tourism websites of 57 states and territories were analysed through the TAW tool for WCAG 2.0 and AChecker for Section 508. Cluster analysis was used to produce a group of websites underlying the accessibility issues obtained from the online tool to understand the common pattern of behaviour.
Findings
The result revealed that websites have serious and significant accessibility issues underlying the prescribed guidelines that would interfere with the use of the website by disabled people. The main issues that make the website least accessible focussed on the following guideline of WCAG 2.0: compatible, navigable, text alternative, distinguishable and adaptable.
Research limitations/implications
The empirical results provide the US states and territories’ tourism authority to better understand web accessibility in their websites and its impact on disabled people.
Originality/value
As the web plays an important role in individual lives, this study highlights the accessibility issues which need immediately focussed and technically planned actions from the respective states and territories to ensure that designed web content should communicate effectively and universally.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to validate the value-added hypothesis in hotel franchising using data from 2,120 properties across the United States with a total of 12,720 observations over a six-year period of 2008-2013.
Design/methodology/approach
A series of annual cross-sectional regressions for each of the sample years and aggregated panel regressions for all sample hotel years were conducted. Newey–West errors were computed to address potential issues of autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity, and sensitivity tests were also performed.
Findings
The paper concludes that franchise royalty fee adds value to hotel franchisees as it significantly and positively affects revenue per available room (RevPAR) for all sample years after controlling for the major determining dimensions of RevPAR. A series of sensitivity tests also show robustness of results.
Research limitations/implications
This study offers a rational and empirical explanation for the positive and significant effect of franchise royalty fees on hotel performance and the value-added hypothesis. Hoteliers need to ensure that there is a proper match between hotel specific attributes and the potential franchise when making a franchise selection. Individual entrepreneurs can partner with franchisors to reap the benefits of franchising, while experienced hoteliers can also use the findings of this study to make strategic decisions.
Originality/value
This study is the first using actual performance data from a large hotel property sample over multiple years to validate the value-added theory, where a higher royalty fee does command a higher RevPAR.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to empirically evaluate the influence of a hotel’s listing on the last-minute hotel booking app, HotelTonight, and average daily rate (ADR) on the hotel’s net operating income (NOI). The study examines the mediating effect of hotel occupancy rate on the relationships between ADR and hotel app usage in terms of NOI.
Design/methodology/approach
The data for the study was graciously provided by Smith Travel Research, Inc. for 80 hotels located in the top Florida destinations listed on the HotelTonight app. Hierarchical multiple regression with a mediation effect was used in the study to test the mediating effect of occupancy between hotel app usage and ADR with NOI.
Findings
The research results show a positive association between a hotel’s HotelTonight listing and ADR in terms of its NOI. Occupancy is found to have a full mediation effect between a hotel’s usage of the mobile app and NOI.
Originality/value
Mobile apps that specialize in last-minute hotel bookings have proliferated in recent years by providing hotels a mobile platform to increase hotel occupancy. However, there is a dearth of studies examining the effect these apps have on a hotel’s bottom line profitability or NOI.

– The objective of this study was to examine the effects of performance and uniqueness as predictors of fundraising event quality.
Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of performance and uniqueness as predictors of fundraising event quality.
Design/methodology/approach
This study utilized intercept surveys collected from attendees at a non-profit fundraising event organized by the tourism and hospitality industry in a major tourism destination. Factor analysis was used to explore underlying event performance dimensions. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess predictability of event performance and unique experience design as predictors of event quality.
Findings
Three salient dimensions were identified: Hedonic Event Performance, Event Design Performance and Informative Event Performance. Of the three dimensions, Hedonic Event Performance was found to significantly predict Event Quality. However, Unique Event Experience provided stronger predictability of Event Quality.
Research limitations/implications
The results provide information which can be utilized by event organizers or managers to enhance the overall quality of fundraising events. The distinct attributes of event success identified in this study can be capitalized upon for improving future attendance. The use of event attendees from one particular event, which focused on a very specific cause, can be considered a limitation of the study.
Originality/value
This study focused on identifying different dimensions of a fundraising event which impact quality. The study provides insight into uniqueness of event experiences and their effect on event quality.

Abstract
The sport, health, and lifestyle sector has been at the forefront of entrepreneurship due to new firms being established that have changed existing business practices. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the following businesses: Fernwood Fitness, KX Pilates, Forever New, Carman's Muesli, and Frequency H20. This enables a better examination of how new sport-related businesses emerge in the global economy.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to enhance the precision and efficiency of English Bond brick masonry by developing three unified templates: Tc, T1, and T2. These templates are designed to address the complexities in the placement of bricks, particularly queen closers and brickbats, in English Bond patterns.
Design/methodology/approach
The research introduces a unique numbering system integrated within each template to facilitate accurate brick placement. Template Tc is designed explicitly for corner masonry, while T1 and T2 are developed for linear masonry along the X and Y directions, respectively. The approach standardizes the bricklaying process, ensuring proper alignment and bricks overlap.
Findings
Applying these templates significantly improves the efficiency and pace of English bond brick masonry. They simplify the construction process, reduce errors, and enhance the overall quality of masonry work. The study demonstrates that using these templates results in consistent and high-quality brickwork, surpassing traditional speed, efficiency, and accuracy methods.
Originality/value
This study contributes a novel, systematic approach to bricklaying in English Bond masonry. The introduction of unified templates aids in skill acquisition for professionals and learners, ensuring flawless execution of masonry projects. This innovative approach holds great value in modern construction practices, promoting standardization and excellence in masonry work.

Abstract
Purpose
There has been increasing advocacy for the inclusion of people with disabilities in disaster research and practice yet there are limited empirical examples that give voice to people with disabilities and their expereinces by consulting them directly. Conceptulising new methods that frame the role of people with disabilties as co-producers are essential for improving the representation of people with disabilties in the context of disaster research and beyond. The paper discusses how to facilitate disability inclusive research and introduces a participatory timeline tool that was co-produced by people with physical disabilities in Sindhupalchok, Nepal.
Design/methodology/approach
The participatory timeline activity utilised 3D printed counters to explore the experiences of people with disabilities during disaster events and their recovery processes, in this case, the 2015 Ghorka earthquake and the 2021 Melamchi Flood. The paper reflects on how to foster disability-inclusive environments by placing agency and ownership by people with disabilities at the centre of research practice.
Findings
This approach created an atmosphere of collaboration and supported co-researchers to reveal their experiences and knowledge on their own terms. The counter tool introduced could be adapted for different research inquiries and used alongside other methods which seek to facilitate the voices of people with disabilities.
Originality/value
The research paper adds to the limited body of litreature on how to conduct participatory research with people with disabilities in disaster contexts and more widely within Majority world contexts.
