Abstract
Purpose
Based on Upper Echelon Theory, the present study is an endeavor to assess the relationship between Chief Executive Officer (CEO) confidence and the performance of a firm. This study also investigates the moderating role of board independence in this context.
Design/methodology/approach
This work is based on a sample of 500 S&P-indexed Indian firms listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange over a time span of 12 years, i.e. from 2010 to 2021. Panel regression models are employed on a final sample of 3,780 firm-year observations to examine the aforesaid relationship.
Findings
The empirical findings of the study support the positive association between CEO confidence and firm performance as highly confident (overconfident) CEOs tend to make quick and intuitive decisions, alleviate the firm's underinvestment problem, and have a higher propensity to boost the overall firm performance. Moreover, the results reveal that the presence of independent directors (IDs) negatively moderates this relationship and reduces the positive impacts of CEO overconfidence as IDs lack the required knowledge of the business. IDs themselves tend to assume the imperative position and reject the CEO's proposals, thereby negatively impacting the firm performance in the long run.
Originality/value
The current study provides significant novel insights into the finance and strategic management literature that overconfidence bias among CEOs can be a desirable managerial trait for shareholders to boost the long-term performance of the firm. The study also extends to the corporate governance literature by providing empirical evidence of IDs reducing the potential beneficial effects of CEO overconfidence and that subsequently decreases the firm performance.

Abstract
This paper provides an examination of the characteristics of educational shift in Indian education during COVID-19 based on the existing research published from March 2020 to December 2023. The paper examines the technological preparedness of all the stakeholders and how technological preparedness created digital equity and inclusivity for digital learning in Indian schools. Given the world-wide closure and shutdown during early 2020, schools were forced to switch their instructions to the newly adopted educational model; namely, digital learning which makes it important to examine two aspects in education: (1) measures taken to provide digital educational opportunities to all students and (2) steps taken to create digital equity and inclusivity in the Indian educational system. The results suggest that several initiatives were taken at national, state, and local level. However, issues of digital equity existed for underprivileged student populations.

Abstract
Purpose
Global urbanization has accelerated due to the persistent trend of rural-to-urban migration in search of better prospects and livelihoods, which has had serious negative effects on the environment, especially in rapidly developing economies. Hence, the purpose of the study is to analyse the relationship between urbanization, economic growth, consumption of renewable energy and carbon emissions with careful examination, particularly in the context of India, where urban population growth has skyrocketed.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses econometric methods like Granger causality analysis and the ARDL bound tests, to analyse the intricate relationships between the selected time series variables for India from 1970 to 2022.
Findings
This research highlights the difficult task of striking a balance between economic development and environmental preservation by emphasizing the crucial role that urbanization and economic expansion play in causing carbon emissions. India’s urbanization trajectory presents a significant policy problem that calls for a move towards renewable energy sources to successfully decrease carbon emissions. Moreover, this research indicates a two-way causal relationship between economic growth, urbanization and carbon emissions, pointing to the intricate interactions between these variables during the developmental stage.
Research limitations/implications
Despite India’s per capita emissions remaining below the global average, this study highlights the mounting policy challenge of balancing economic development with environmental sustainability as urbanization persists. The paper emphasizes the need for India to invest in renewable energy capacity to replace non-renewable sources and mitigate the carbon footprint of its growing energy demands. Collaborative efforts between India and the developed world to facilitate access to clean energy technologies are crucial for India to achieve sustainable growth in the long run.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, existing literature predominantly focuses on investigating the relationship between renewable energy and economic growth, with only a limited number of studies exploring the impact on sustainable development to attain carbon neutrality. Furthermore, these studies have not considered the role of urbanization and non-renewable energy in addressing the challenge of sustainability issues in an emerging country like India. Hence, this study is a comprehensive study that addresses the research gap in these directions.

Abstract
Purpose
The study examines the role of ethical leadership in the innovative performance of employees. Further, the purpose of the study is to investigate the mediating effect of human capital and social capital on the relationship between ethical leadership and the innovative performance of employees.
Design/methodology/approach
The study collected primary data from 386 managerial-level employees of information technology (IT) companies in the northern region of India. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyse the data and derive the direct and indirect effects.
Findings
The findings indicate a significant positive impact of ethical leadership on the innovative performance of employees. Further, it was found that ethical leadership has both direct and indirect effects on the innovative performance of employees, where the indirect effect was mediated through intellectual capital (IC). The research confirms that IC and ethical leadership are crucial resources for fostering a knowledge-driven culture and innovative performance amongst employees.
Originality/value
The research has made a novel attempt to explore the interplay between ethical leadership, IC and innovative performance in the Indian context. Further, the study provides actionable strategies for business leaders to optimise business processes and encourage innovative practices amongst employees in the company.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient computational technique, which uses Haar wavelets collocation approach coupled with the Newton-Raphson method and solves the following class of system of Lane–Emden equations:
Design/methodology/approach
To deal with singularity, Haar wavelets are used, and to deal with the nonlinear system of equations that arise during computation, the Newton-Raphson method is used. The convergence of these methods is also established and the results are compared with existing techniques.
Findings
The authors propose three methods based on uniform Haar wavelets approximation coupled with the Newton-Raphson method. The authors obtain quadratic convergence for the Haar wavelets collocation method. Test problems are solved to validate various computational aspects of the Haar wavelets approach. The authors observe that with only a few spatial divisions the authors can obtain highly accurate solutions for both initial value problems and boundary value problems.
Originality/value
The results presented in this paper do not exist in the literature. The system of nonlinear singular differential equations is not easy to handle as they are singular, as well as nonlinear. To the best of the knowledge, these are the first results for a system of nonlinear singular differential equations, by using the Haar wavelets collocation approach coupled with the Newton-Raphson method. The results developed in this paper can be used to solve problems arising in different branches of science and engineering.

Abstract
Purpose
This research paper investigates the theoretical frameworks encompassing a nuanced analysis of the digital divide in the Indian educational context, recognising that it is not merely a matter of technology access but also the ability to effectively use the resource for enhancing learning outcomes. This research provides valuable insights for fostering a more equitable and digitally inclusive learning environment by integrating conceptual insights with empirical evidence. The New Education Policy (NEP), India 2020 firmly emphasises the appropriate integration of technology into the teaching-learning process to develop relevant competencies. The pertinent question is, for India to conquer the second digital divide challenge, is the pace of technology accessibility and skill development sufficient?
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is a desk research, using secondary data from the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE+), the Indian Government database of schools. A structured dataset has been created for all years, where states are grouped in descending ranking order of availability of infrastructure and teachers trained. A colour key segregates the States into three zones demonstrating their different levels of performance – high (green), moderate (blue) and low (yellow). The purpose is to identify state/s that have moved from one zone to another and, thereafter, analyse the reasons behind the movement.
Findings
Almost all states remained in the same digital resource availability zone for the four years studied, except for a limited few. Despite government interventions through higher budget allocation and targeted policies, growth rates of teacher training in computer usage slowed down post-COVID-19. A high positive correlation between Teachers' training in computer usage and the availability of computer and Internet facilities in schools indicates that an increase in digital infrastructure in schools is highly linked to teachers' training in computer usage and would ultimately translate into better use of digital resources to impart equitable education opportunities.
Research limitations/implications
Primary data collection through interviews might have added to the critical findings. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further on a case-by-case basis for any state under consideration.
Practical implications
Enhancing digital infrastructure in schools and building digital competence in teachers must be understood in the context of the learning organisation and the beneficiaries' attitudes at the meso-level to expand stakeholder motivation towards digital internalisation. This requires continuous engagement with education institutions as professional learning organisations, which will thereby help develop a decentralised context for teacher competency building. Collaboration, continuous monitoring of the outcomes of professional development programs, and sharing best practices are crucial in improving teacher readiness for digital education.
Social implications
Access to tangible resources, such as computers, Internet connectivity and educational software, and developing intangible resources, such as teacher digital competencies, will play a pivotal role in shaping students' learning experiences. By studying the discrepancies in digital resource accessibility and teacher technology adoption, this research endeavours to add to the efforts towards enhancing the educational landscape.
Originality/value
This paper seeks to address a critical issue in the Indian education system and contribute to the ongoing effort to prevent the widening of the second and third digital divide in schools, and help achieve UN SDG Goals 4 and 10.

The fiery and serious impact of COVID-19 shook the world to its core. In addition, most governments around the world temporarily closed educational institutions in an effort to stop the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic. In India too, as a part of the nationwide lockout, the government closed all educational institutions, as a result, learners ranging from school going children to postgraduate students were affected. These nationwide closures accounted for more than 91% of the world’s population. Many other countries have implemented localised solutions affecting millions of learners. The outbreak of COVID-19 advised us that change is inevitable. It has served as a catalyst to develop platforms and technologies that have not been used before. The education sector is fighting to avoid crises with different viewpoints and digitising challenges to address the threat of epidemics. The purpose of this paper is to identify the positive and negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector in India.
