Abstract

Purpose

This article presents a method for handling everyday opportunities for improvement, led by floor staff in health care institutions. More than 400,000 incidents and accidents were recorded in Quebec health care institutions in 2013. The burden of treatment falls on hospital floor staff. The purpose is to raise the visibility of this problem and support staff better in their efforts to handle opportunities for improvement.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on issues identified in the literature, which have been found to exist in various organizations, the method involved reviewing practices in the field, proposing a solution, and testing it to assess its relevance and limitations. The method was tested in partnership with the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal, in the internal medicine unit at Hôtel-Dieu campus. The test lasted three months. Indicators from this test have been compared to results in the literature.

Findings

The proposed method presents a 68% increase in ideas generated per person and per week compared to the reference study. The mean time for closing actions was about 41% better (lower) than in the reference case.

Research limitations/implications

The test lasted 15 weeks; a longer test is needed to collect more data.

Practical implications

The first practical implication of this study was the creation of a method allowing employees to seize opportunities for improvement in their daily work. The application of this method revealed (1) the operational nature of the proposal (empowerment of the work team); (2) the operationalization of continuous improvement (71% of ideas were finalized while the initiative was monitored); (3) the smooth operation of the mechanism for facilitating continuous improvement (organization of weekly meetings and team participation in these meetings in 90% of cases); and (4) a shared feeling that intra- and inter-team communication had been strengthened.

Originality/value

The main value of this paper is that it proposes a simple problem-solving process that gives employees an opportunity to improve their daily work. The originality of this paper resides in comparing results to a standard case and observing an improvement. This paper proposes a new problem-solving structure and tests it scientifically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to thecomprehension of management education in the Global South, focusing on how contextual specificities, exemplified in the Colombian case, have driven curricular reforms. These reforms harmonize traditional practical training with a substantial emphasis on humanities education. to

Design/methodology/approach

Using a historical approach, this study conducts a heuristic and hermeneutic analysis of historical primary documents from archives, secondary sources and interviews.

Findings

The curricular reforms in Eafit’s Business Administration program responded to the need to diverge from a model borrowed from the United States. This departure leads to organic transformations that empower the inclusion of humanities for holistic professional manager education. This holistic approach was aimed to equip graduates to address organizational challenges and unique local issues, transcending conventional boundaries of education.

Research limitations/implications

This research serves as an initial exploration of a Global South case, laying the groundwork for future analyses of analogous cases. Comparative studies may eventually provide a more comprehensive understanding of management education beyond the Global North.

Originality/value

This work pioneers a relatively unexplored area of literature by investigating the history, unique aspects of business administration curricula and the role of curricular reforms within specific contexts. It is particularly pertinent in understanding the distinctive characteristics of business schools in the Global South. These institutions initially took inspiration from well-established American counterparts and literature reflecting Northern Global settings. However, they introduced innovations tailored to their local demands. This study spotlights the distinctive character of management education in Latin America, emphasizing a robust humanistic component.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide a broad understanding of the pre-completion stage and subsequent abandonment of mergers and acquisitions (M&As).

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 117 peer-reviewed, English language articles published in scholarly journals were considered in the review. The approach includes a descriptive evaluation of the literature, coupled with content analysis. The paper uses both positivist and constructivist approaches to qualitative research. The analysis is conducted with the help of R programming and Gephi visualization software. The authors organize the work around the event of outcome/closure of deal proposal.

Findings

It is found that earlier studies sampled on domestic M&As in developed economies (DEs). However, the interest of scholars has increased in cross-border deals and emerging economies (EEs) in the last decade. Various factors interact and facilitate the completion/abandonment of good and bad deals. The authors find that complex non-linear relationships exist, and there is a need for studies with other classification techniques focusing on predictive accuracy.

Research limitations/implications

The literature review is limited to articles available to the researcher using search terms related to M&A completion/termination. The databases accessed were: ProQuest, Scopus and Web of Science. However, backward snowballing was performed to avoid the omission of relevant articles.

Originality/value

The findings and subsequent discussions familiarize researchers and practitioners with an overview of research undertaken in the field of M&A abandonment. The authors find voids within the literature and suggest future research agendas.
