Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the pressure response characteristics of the cartridge electromagnetic relief valve, which offers the problems caused by low pressure response and low efficiency in hydraulic plate shearing machines.

Design/methodology/approach

First of all the mathematical model of the cartridge electromagnetic relief valve is deduced to analyze the influence of the relevant parameters on the system pressure response. Then experiments are conducted to research the dynamic characteristics on building and relieving pressure. Through comparison of theoretical and experimental research, the results are found.

Findings

The results show that the input flow, working pressure, diameter of adjacent damping hole, and spring stiffness of the main valve have great influence on building pressure of the system, and have no influence on relieving pressure, while diameter of damping hole of control cover plate has influence on the building and relieving pressure of the system.

Originality/value

The research results provide powerful theoretical support for the parametric design of the cartridge electromagnetic relief valve in the hydraulic system of plate shearing machine.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate dynamic characteristics of opposed-conical gas-dynamic bearings considering five degree-of-freedom motion, including translation and tilt.

Design/methodology/approach

The steady-state Reynolds equation and perturbed Reynolds equations are solved on the surface of conical bearings, and both stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated. A formula for quickly calculating critical mass is deduced to discriminate the stability of the rotor considering the five degree-of-freedom motion.

Findings

Results show that the stability of the rotor is mainly determined by translation rather than tilt. The formula of critical mass is validated by comparing the results with traditional Routh–Hurwitz criterion.

Originality/value

The formula proposed in this paper greatly simplifies the solution of critical mass, which facilitates the rotor stability design. It is applicable for opposed-conical bearings, opposed-hemispherical bearings and spherical bearings. The results provide theoretical guidance for the design of gas-dynamic bearings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to predict the unstable cavitation shedding flow around a 2D Clark-y hydrofoil.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper studies Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) model which was employed in the two-phase flow with a homogeneous cavitation model.

Findings

Maximum density ratio affects the mass transfer rate between the liquid and the vapor significantly. The cavitating flow predicted by PANS model can resolve more turbulent scales by decreasing the parameter fk.

Originality/value

The accuracy of numerical prediction is improved by increasing the maximum density ratio and decreasing fk.

Abstract

The promotion of television programmes and television channels is becoming increasingly important in the UK as it is elsewhere. This study focuses on those forms which appear on‐air between programmes on British television and which have come to be known collectively as “clutter”. The forms which this clutter takes and their marketing communications functions are discussed, with analyses provided of specific examples. A number of issues arising from the growing practice of on‐air promotions are identified and suggestions made for possible future research in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

In high-speed processing, the influence on the machining accuracy of a machine tool is greatly caused by the thermal deformation of the motorized spindle; a further study on the thermal characteristics of the spindle is given in this paper. This study aims to reduce the thermal error and improve the performance of the machine tool by discussing the relationships between the temperature distributions and rotating accuracy caused by the thermal deformations of the spindle.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper opted for a method combining the theoretical analysis and the experimental study to study the thermal stability of the high-speed motorized spindle. First of all, a finite element model of the spindle was built with ANSYS, whereby temperature distributions and the thermal deformations were successively obtained at different speeds. And then, both the temperature field and the rotating accuracy of the motorized spindle were measured simultaneously by the thermal stability experiment. Finally, the experimental and theoretical results were compared and validated.

Findings

The thermal stability of the motorized spindle was studied in this paper, and some findings from the study were as follows: the spindle’s rotating accuracy maintained good in X direction but bad in Y and Z directions in terms of the deformations; the higher front-end temperature of the spindle which can significantly affect the rotating accuracy is needed to be controlled mainly; the recovery speed of the spindle deformation lagged behind the temperature’s fallback speed; the vibration graph about radial rotating sensitivity synthesized by X1 and X2 presented a trifoliate shape.

Originality/value

Based on a built test-bed which can synchronously measure the motorized spindle’s temperature distribution and rotating accuracy with five-point method, the coupling effects of the thermal deformation and temperature are embodied, and not only the vibration graph but also the thermal tilt angles can be gained. Therefore, considering the influence of the thermal deformation on the heat generated by the bearings, the paper fulfilled a study by which it was obtained that the front-end temperature of the spindle, which was higher and could significantly affect the rotating accuracy, needed to be controlled mainly.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to explore the optimal strategies of inventory financing when the risk-averse retailer has different objectives, in the presence of multi-risk, i.e. demand risk, non-operational risk and retailer's strategic default risk.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper develops an inventory financing model consisting of a bank and a risk-averse retailer with strategic default. This paper considers two scenarios, i.e. the capital-constrained retailer cares about its profit or firm value. In the first scenario, the bank acts as a Stackelberg leader determining its interest rate, and the retailer acts as a follower determining its pledged quantity. In the second one, the bank capital market is perfectly competitive. Lagrange multiplier method is adopted to solve the optimization.

Findings

The optimal strategies in inventory financing scheme in two scenarios are derived. Only when the initial stock is relatively high, the retailer pledges part of the initial stock. Retailer's risk aversion reduces its pledged quantity and performance. The strategic default reduces its profit. When it is relatively high, the bank refuses to offer the loan.

Practical implications

Analytical inventory and financing strategies are specified to help retailers and banks to better understand the interaction of finance and operations management and to better respond to multi-risk.

Originality/value

New results and managerial insights are derived by incorporating partially endogenous strategic default and risk aversion into inventory financing, which enriches the interfaces of operations management and finance.

Abstract

Purpose

The increase of turbulence sources and risk points under the complex social information network has brought severe challenges. This paper discusses risk perception and intelligent decision-making under the complex social information network to maintain social security and financial security.

Design/methodology/approach

Cross-modal semantic fusion and social risk perception, temporal knowledge graph and analysis, complex social network intelligent decision-making methods have been studied. A big data computing platform of software and hardware integration for security combat is constructed based on the technical support.

Findings

The software and hardware integration platform driven by big data can realize joint identification of significant risks, intelligent analysis and large-scale group decision-making.

Practical implications

The integrated platform can monitor the abnormal operation and potential associated risks of Listed Companies in real-time, reduce information asymmetry and accounting costs and improve the capital market's ability to serve the real economy. It can also provide critical technical support and decision support in necessary public opinion monitoring and control business.

Originality/value

In this paper, the theory of knowledge-enhanced multi-modal multi-granularity dynamic risk analysis and intelligent group decision-making and the idea of an inference think tank (I-aid-S) is proposed. New technologies and methods, such as association analysis, time series evolution and super large-scale group decision-making, have been established. It's also applied in behavior and situation deduction, public opinion and finance and provides real-time, dynamic, fast and high-quality think tank services.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper studies the effects of lottery preference on stock market participation at the macro level.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the abnormal search volume intensity for lottery-related keywords from the Baidu search engine to capture retail investors' lottery preference. To measure stock market participation, they use five different macro-level measures from various angles. They perform the time series regression analysis in their empirical study.

Findings

First, the validation tests show that the lottery preference index in this study is reasonable. Further, the authors find that lottery preference increases people's propensity to enter and trade in the stock market. Besides, they find that the effect on trading behavior is asymmetric, that is, high lottery preference has a more significant impact on trading behavior than low lottery preference. However, lottery preference has no significant effect on the stockholding.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the growing literature that examines the determinants of stock market participation and the role of lottery/gambling preference in the financial market. It also provides direct and novel evidence for Statman's (2002) conclusions about the similarity of lottery players and stock traders.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the perspective of technology supply chain, this study explores the effect of macroeconomic uncertainty regarding the spatiotemporal evolution of urban innovation networks to establish causality.

Design/methodology/approach

It collects patent trading data for 283 cities in China (2005–2017) and employs the spatial econometric model to investigate the causal relationship.

Findings

The regional transfer of advanced technology in China is rising sharply, and the innovation network based on patent trading is typically high-density, multi-direction and wide-spreading. Further, macroeconomic uncertainty has a negative effect on the scale of innovation flows and the absorptive capacity in eastern cities. However, it has no significant impact on the innovation network characteristics in developed cities. In contrast, macroeconomic uncertainty is detrimental for the absorptive capacity and node importance in inland and undeveloped cities.

Practical implications

As macroeconomic uncertainty increases, it is important to improve the quality of the urban innovation network with a better understanding of heterogeneity to promote further suitability innovation at the region-level.

Originality/value

This study highlights a clear and distinctive view that macroeconomic uncertainty not only directly affects the evolution of the urban innovation network but also indirectly affects the characteristics of other city nodes via the spatial spillover mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate universal banks as an important source of external funding and their effects on borrowing firms’ innovation outputs.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ regression analyses including a difference-in-difference approach and a two-sided matching method to ensure the robustness of the findings. The authors further explore some potential channels and boundary conditions for the main findings.

Findings

The authors find that borrowing from universal banks is negatively associated with the quantity of firm innovation, but not the quality of firm innovation. The authors document that borrowing firms reduce their R&D expenditures and rely more on external partners to produce innovation outputs after loan originations from universal banks. The negative relation between universal bank lending and the quantity of firm innovation is more prominent for unrelated innovation and for financially constrained firms.

Research limitations/implications

The evidence reveals that universal banks may use their informational advantage and market power to limit their corporate borrowers’ investment in innovation activities.

Originality/value

The paper extends the line of research on the source of financing and firm innovation, and establishes a robust relationship between capital market and product market.
