Abstract

The NASD has had a rule in place governing underwriting compensation, but with the expanded pace and types of services available, defining what falls into this category has proven problematic. Thus the NASD has proposed a new rule, the roots of which are discussed in this article. Also this proposed Rule 2710 is compared and contrasted with the old rule. There is also a very thorough discussion of safe harbors that might be relied on.

Abstract

On May 10, 2002, the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) approved certain rule changes filed by the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (the “NASD”) and the New York Stock Exchange, Inc. (the “NYSE”) relating to research analysts’ perceived conflicts of interest. In proposing such rule changes, the SROs noted that these new rules were intended “to improve the objectivity of research and provide investors with more useful and reliable information when making investment decisions” and “to reinforce the integrity of the process and help rebuild investors’ faith in research and in the equities market as a whole”. To that end, NASD Rule 2711 and NYSE Rule 472 (the “rules”) restrict and prohibit certain activities of firms and their research analysts. This article sets forth a summary of the rules and the guidance relating thereto. It also provides a brief description of the recently proposed Regulation AC, which effectively will impose additional requirements on firms and their analysts. By integrating these sources into one, this article intends to survey the existing landscape as it relates to the rules governing research analysts, and, more important, to serve as a guidepost around which this landscape continues to evolve.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of virtual classrooms as an emerging classroom typology in comparison to the physical classrooms in the design process. Two case studies were held in order to infer design students' classroom preferences in the project lifecycle. The findings put forth figures that compare two forms of design communication in the two classroom types in terms of their contribution to design development. Although the students acknowledged many advantages of web-based communication in the virtual classroom, they indicated that they are unwilling to let go off face-to-face encounters with the instructors and fellow students in the physical classroom. It is asserted that the future design studio will be an integrated learning environment where both physical and virtual encounters will be presented to the student. Utilizing the positive aspects of both communication techniques, a hybrid setting for the design studio is introduced, comprising the physical classroom as well as the virtual one. The proposed use for the hybrid setting is grouped under 3 phases according to the stage of the design process; as the initial, development and final phases. Within this framework, it is inferred that the design studio of the future will be an integrated form of space, where the physical meets the virtual.

Abstract

The following classified, annotated list of titles is intended to provide reference librarians with a current checklist of new reference books, and is designed to supplement the RSR review column, “Recent Reference Books,” by Frances Neel Cheney. “Reference Books in Print” includes all additional books received prior to the inclusion deadline established for this issue. Appearance in this column does not preclude a later review in RSR. Publishers are urged to send a copy of all new reference books directly to RSR as soon as published, for immediate listing in “Reference Books in Print.” Reference books with imprints older than two years will not be included (with the exception of current reprints or older books newly acquired for distribution by another publisher). The column shall also occasionally include library science or other library related publications of other than a reference character.

Abstract

The following is an annotated list of materials dealing with information literacy including instruction in the use of information resources, research, and computer skills related to retrieving, using, and evaluating information. This review, the eighteenth to be published in Reference Services Review, includes items in English published in 1991. A few are not annotated because the compiler could not obtain copies of them for this review.

Abstract

Our nation at last seems to be rousing herself to put forth her full strength, and the organisation of industry is receiving at the hands of the new National Government no less attention than the armies that are springing into being under the magnificent direction of the new Knight of the Garter, Lord Kitchener. Hearts are beating high with hope and determination to help in every way possible in this vast effort to uphold the right, and the call comes afresh to each one of us to do everything in our power at this time of National need. In the present number we gladly publish more names of comrades who have joined the forces, but could wish they were still more numerous. Are there not others who can and who will join the noble army of heroes prepared to face the enemy in the field for faith and Motherland?

Abstract

Purpose

Robotic chefs are starting to replace human chefs in restaurant industry. Whether customers have a good food quality prediction may have an important effect on their patronage decision. Based on the stereotype content model, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of robotic chef anthropomorphism on food quality prediction through warmth and competence.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical analysis was done to test the theoretical model by using the SmartPLS software. A nonhuman-like robotic chef and a robotic chef with humanoid hands were used as background materials in the questionnaire. The effective sample was 221.

Findings

Robotic chef anthropomorphism affects food quality prediction through the sequential mediators of warmth and competence. Age is a significant control variable.

Research limitations/implications

Robotic chef anthropomorphism positively affects food quality prediction. The halo effect of warmth perception on competence perception should be considered in the context of robot anthropomorphism.

Practical implications

Restaurants which feature robotic chefs should use robotic chefs with anthropomorphic designs and promote the anthropomorphic elements of robotic chefs in advertisements.

Social implications

The anthropomorphic design of robot chefs will facilitate the development of artificial intelligence in restaurants in the future.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is one of the first to focus on how robotic chef anthropomorphism affects food quality prediction and reveals the roles of warmth and competence in the influence of robotic chef anthropomorphism on food quality prediction.
