Neal M. Ashkanasy has a Ph.D. in Social and Organizational Psychology from the University of Queensland, and has research interests in leadership, organizational culture, and business ethics. In recent years, his research has focused on the role of emotions in organizational life. He has published his work in journals such as the Academy of Management Review, the Academy of Management Executive, and the Journal of Management, and is co-editor of three books: The Handbook of Organizational Culture and Climate (Sage) and Emotions in the Workplace; Theory, Research, and Practice (Quorum); Managing Emotions in the Workplace (ME Sharpe). He is a past Chair of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division of the Academy of Management.Claire E. Ashton-James is completing an Honors degree in Business Management through the University of Queensland Business School. Her undergraduate degree majors were in philosophy, music, and psychology. Her present research interest is in the role of the impact of cognitive information processing capacity on emotion regulation and social functioning.Cary L. Cooper is Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health, Lancaster University Management School, Lancaster University. He is the author of over 80 books and over 300 academic journal articles. Jordan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Management at Griffith University, Australia. He gained his Ph.D. in management at the University of Queensland. Leiter is Professor of Psychology and Vice President (Academic) of Acadia University in Canada. He is Director of the Center for Organizational Research & Development that applies high quality research methods to human resource issues confronting organizations. He received degrees in Psychology from Duke University (BA), Vanderbilt University (MA), and the University of Oregon (Ph.D.). He teaches courses on organizational psychology and on stress at Acadia University. The research center provides a lively bridge between university studies and organizational consultation for himself and his students. Dr. Leiter has received ongoing research funding for 20 years from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada as well as from international foundations. Dr. Mack earned an MBA in Entrepreneurship from DePaul University in 1993. Dr. Mack has published a number of articles and book chapters on job stress, workplace violence, and small business. His Organizational Dynamics article “EDS: An Inside View of a Corporate Life Cycle Transition” examined the spin-off of EDS from General Motors Corporation. Nelson, Ph.D. is The CBA Associates Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Management at Oklahoma State University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. He joined WHO in 1995 after 20 years in international health, serving in Pakistan, Kenya, and over 18 other countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He has authored or edited ten books, including as senior editor of Managing Drug Supply (1997/1978), and over 40 articles and chapters on essential drugs, public health, and stress management. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice, and a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Medicine (UK) and the American College of Preventive Medicine. Abstract
This chapter proposes a more holistic approach to understanding work stress by incorporating eustress, the positive response to stressors. We begin by casting the study of eustress as part of a contemporary movement in both psychology and organizational behavior that accentuates the positive aspects of human adaptation and functioning. We discuss the development of the concept of eustress, and provide extensive evidence, both psychological and physiological, for the purpose of developing an explicit construct definition. An exploratory study of hospital nurses is presented as an initial test of our holistic model of stress. We conclude by asserting that there must exist a complement to coping with distress such that rather than preventing or resolving the negative side of stress, individuals savor the positive side of stress.

Chief executive officers of organisations are the major managers of corporate culture. CEOs must be able to influence culture through such explicit means as policy statements and slogans as well as through more subtle, implicit means such as rites, ceremonies, and symbols. A cultural network hierarchy is presented which classifies these tools according to the CEO′s personal involvement with each element. Guidelines are presented for using the tools of cultural communication to change or maintain culture at both the managerial level and the operational level of the organisation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine if perceptions that women and men hold toward careers in information technology (IT) and toward women working in IT create potential barriers that may prevent women managers from pursuing careers in IT.
Design/methodology/approach
A field study was designed to test the hypotheses. The subjects were graduate students pursuing either an MBA or IT management degree.
Findings
The results revealed that males had greater self‐efficacy for IT occupations, greater passion for computing, and less positive attitudes toward capabilities of women in IT. Our prediction that career barriers would intensify for women who chose an IT management option was not supported. These findings suggest that traditional work role expectations concerning women's efficacy for careers in IT still persist.
Research limitations/implications
This research was limited by its focus on subjects in the early stages of a management career. To gain a better understanding of the barriers that women face in IT career fields, longitudinal studies are needed to track these barriers throughout the career development process.
Practical implications
If organisations want to attract, retain, and advance women managers in IT fields, they must proactively address gender role biases and create work environments that build self‐efficacy expectations for women, as well as for men.
Originality/value
Much of the research on career barriers women face in IT is based on qualitative studies and anecdotal evidence. This study provides empirical evidence that barriers still exist for women in IT despite the enhanced demand for IT professionals and managers over the past decade.

Notes that organizations throughout the industrialized world continue to downsize and restructure in response to global competitive pressures. Some firms downsize more than once, and indications are that downsizing and restructuring efforts will continue over the next decade at least. States that, unfortunately, many, perhaps half of these initiatives are unsuccessful. Outlines a three‐stage model designed to improve downsizing and restructuring efforts. The first stage, initiation, involves planning the revitalization efforts. The second stage, implementation, outlines the ways of smoothing the transition. The final stage, institutionalization, comes to grips with healing and refocusing the organization.

Purpose
The paper aims to incorporate a sensemaking framework that augments research on organizational justice and aggression.
Design/methodology/approach
Sensemaking is used as a basis for designing an aggression model. Organizational justice and attribution theory are key components of sensemaking triggers. In addition, the model includes both organizational and personal influences on the sensemaking process. Finally, information processing theory provides explanations as to the importance of retrospect in sensemaking.
Findings
The sensemaking framework: presents the workplace antecedents of the sensemaking process; specifies the sensemaking triggers that provoke aggressive responses; identifies the individual and organizational factors that affect both the sensemaking triggers and the link between triggers and aggressive behaviors; and incorporates a full range of aggressive behaviors (e.g. violence, verbal abuse, or refusal to return telephone calls) that occur in organizations.
Practical implications
The paper proposes that by taking a sensemaking perspective, leaders can understand and proactively manage aggressive behavior in the workplace.
Originality/value
This paper provides a comprehensive aggression model that can assist both researchers and practitioners regarding the sensemaking process and its role in workplace aggression.

Abstract
Despite the breadth of knowledge on self and identity formation across the study of organizations, the field of organizational development and change has limited research on the construction of professional identity. Much has been written to describe the “self-concepts” of those practicing and researching in the field, but there have been no investigations that have explored how these “self-concepts” form. In addition, although women have contributed to defining the “self” in the field, men have held the dominant perspective on the subject. Thus, in this chapter, we address a disparity in the research by exploring the construction of professional identity in the field of organizational development and change, and we give voice to the renowned women who helped to build the field. Using the profiles of 17 American women included in The Palgrave Handbook of Organizational Change Thinkers, we perform a narrative analysis based upon the concepts and models prevalent in the literature on identity formation. By disentangling professional identity formation of the notable women in the field, we can begin to see the nuance and particularities involved in its construction and gain deeper understandings about effective ways to prepare individuals to work in and advance the field.
